Before there was Mana to tap, and before there were trap cards to flip, there were just playing cards and a shit load of games to play with them. Sitting down with some people face to face and playing a card game is a blast. For those who play, what games? For me, I've fallen down the rabbithole of learning and teaching some very oldschool cardgames. I've also started collecting various kinds of decks to play many of the games I've discovered.

French-suited decks (the normal 52 deck everyone is aware of)

Everyone knows poker, but Cribbage is a great two player game with a lot of strategy. Get to 121 points. Each round, the dealer gets a second hand they can score with creating an intense race as both players rocket ahead in their score and then fall behind.

Italian-suited (the Tarot suits, swords, clubs, cups, etc,)

Scopa and Scopone are quick games where you sweep cards off the board using other cards. The perfect Janni game.

German suited (or Hungarian suited) - Acorns, bells, leaves, hearts. This was an older style of deck before the french version became more popular.

Schnapsen is a game that uses this deck and its big gimmick is get to 66 points, but you cant count or score the cards you win as you win them. You have to keep count in your head and then call a count when you are sure you've won the round. Great for those who can card count.

Now for the Weebs on here.
Hanafuda- a weirdo Nihongo deck of thick plastic cards of flowers and animals.

The hanafuda game everyone talks about is Koi-Koi, but there are a bunch others. Koi-Koi is for two players where you play cards to capture other cards from the table to make groups of cards like poker hands. It has a mechanic to risk all your current points to win even more, but its dicey.

Bonus round:
French Tarot, before it was used for divination, it was just a game and you can still get cards built for playing it, but if not, most normal tarot decks can still be used. Complex, but for those who like Euchre, its that but always 1 player vs 3 others.

I’ve been playing rummy a little bit lately. It’s frustrating because I know it’s very much a game of skill — for instance, Stu Ungar would win ~80% of his games against other top players — but I’m having a hard time developing a better strategy. Aside from keeping track of which cards have been discarded + getting better at picking discards, I’m not sure what else I can do.

Never played Rummy, only Gin Rummy and only once. I was however taught Bridge once by three old fogees who did there best to make it as confusing as possible, when in hindsight, its just the scoring thats complex.

I learned how to play War, Poker, Bloody Knucks, Blackjack, Rummy, Bullshit, Steal the Old Man's Bundle, etc at a really young age. My oldest sister remains the slickest card cheat I have ever seen.

Nowadays you can do these all in Tabletop Simulator but it's just not the same without other people physically there and a pile of chips or pennies.

Euchre suffers from the same problems as Golf: there is always that one asshole who takes the game super serious and even wants to put money on the game. One good thing about living in a redneck town is that the bars will hold Euchre tournaments every Tuesday so these people can play with each other and you can drink beer at the bar in peace without getting roped into their nonsense.

Redneck Euchre Hustlers.

That brought a smile to my face. Thats so dumb.

I tried to play poker with a tarot deck once.
2 people died, and I got turned into a newt(I have since recovered).

Personally my favorite card game is "dogs body", also called "bitch nigga"
You need six players, and each is given a different title. From top to bottom it's
King
Prince
Priest
Farmer
Begger
Dogsbody (or bitch nigga)
Everyone draws cards until the deck is empty. (I like playing with 2 decks of different colors at the same time)
All the players in the rank below you gives their best card to you.
The cards are ranked as follows:
Joker (wild)
2
Ace
King
Queen
Jack
10
9
8
7
Etc
You must play a card that is equal or higher than the previous card played. If doubles or higher are played, The next player must play the same amount of cards. If you are unable to beat the last card(s) played, you take the pile. The goal is to get rid of your cards first, making you the king the next game. Last person left is the dogsbody (or bitch nigga) next game
it is played until someone becomes king twice, making them the winner.

Kings in the Corner is the fucking shit. Also a great drinking game. The game is pretty complex to explain unless you’re really showing it, so this video does a great job.

Usually when my friends and family always play, we don’t do the convoluted score-keeping portion of the game. Just whoever empties their hand first wins. We also recycle dead corner piles back into the bottom of the deck and usually keep going until there’s one player with a hand left. Whoever’s last ends up taking a shot. Fun stuff.

I play bridge too. Its not that hard to learn it well enough to play, so long as there the other 3 players do know how to play. It is quite a bit harder to get good at it. Yahoo used to have a games site with every card game you can think of, and a lot of board games too. Back in the day I played there often and it seemed like most of the players were from Australia for some reason.

I enjoyed playing boo-ray or bourre accent mark but I was drunk when I learned it and can't recount the rules. It's sort of like gin rummy but with Cajuns.

Very happy the thread already exists.
Is there a culture on the US to play cards with family and friends? In south europe most people dont own table top games or card games other than UNO but everybody has a normal deck and knows how to play through their grandparents or friends.

I wanna say the deck you refer as Italian is really spanish in origin but I dont know my card lore :\
Either way it has amazing games. My favorite is Culo which id describe as Bullshit but better.

there are so many more: Mentiroso(liar) , Cuadrado(square- you have a partner and communicate secretly with them), Cinquillo (5), Escoba (broom. If you dont like maths you wont like this one) , Burro (donkey, very quick game), Tute, Mus (betting game but you can use chickpeas instead of money), brisca, guerra…

Im sure they have their equivalent in other countries/decks.

For the kiwis interested heres Instructions to everything

There's one that I really like, it's a game that everyone knows in some form(even as UNO) so it's easy for everyone to pick up and play it even if it might go by a million different names. Very convenient. Then after two minutes everyone is fighting over the rules because they're slightly different in different regions/cities/countries and everyone knows that the true rules are the ones from the place you're from.

That's Crazy Eights.

I like Uno but even playing it with grad students they gimp the rules hard (a draw limit of one when you don't have a match, instead of four or unlimited).

Other trad-card games I like:
BS
Egyptian Ratscrew (though haven't played with anybody in a long time, and tends to destroy decks, tables, and friendships)
Gin (different from Gin Rummy)
Scum

There's a few solitaire games I like, too.

Jersh mentioned Pai gow in either the most recent stream or the one before it. I looked it up and it's a cool game. I'd definitely play it if I walked by a game table.

Rules here

BTW do any 2 adults agree on the rules of Poker?
"That's nice that you have four aces but check this out. 2 of hearts, 5 of diamonds, 7 of clubs and jack of spades.
That's a Dirty Sanchez, it is worth like a billion points. Pot goes to me losers! "
