In retrospection the game has many problems that contributed to its demise but they shot themselves in the foot right out of the gate by wanting good graphics (for the time), a fuck load of players on a single map with no load screens on top of a good physics system and they wanted a lot of players to make the massive faction battles work out well.
This lead to no balance between hardware requirements and graphics/physics. They wanted to have their cake and eat it too. After they realized the high hardware barrier of entry was keeping a lot of people from being able to run the game they significantly dumbed down the physics and nerfed the graphics. It was a sloppy job that left the game in a ironically even worse state ever since with shit optimization and physics bugs that still exist to this day.
Throw in gameplay mechanics that aren't explained anywhere and increasingly retarded development decisions the game was doomed long ago
At this point planetside 2 is on its death bed imo. It's not going to rebound, only decay like its been doing for years now.
