@moocow I must very respectfully disagree on the Apple hate in one aspect, and that aspect is modding the everloving shit out of old devices

Case in point is my iPod Classic 7th Gen, that has steadfastly refused to die and has been very accommodating for me adding aftermarket USB-C connectors, a new case and the tiniest most adorable bluetooth radio

You can (and should) call me a fag for not just buying a better device to begin with but I wanted to make this thing I got for my birthday a million years ago work (because fuck me I guess) and there's no accounting for taste when you're young and retarded

Now I'm old, retarded and happy to reclaim a little piece of my past, plus I got to show it to my mom and say "hey remember this thing you got me a long time ago, look it still works, thank you <3"

edit turns out @Never Scored beat me up and down the block but yeah, iPod Classic plus Rockbox and new hardware breathes life into classic hardware, old faggots most affected

How do I do this!?
Full disclosure on this is that I did it in stages, first thing I did was use the original case and added new battery and storage so I could use it again

There are a few companies that offer the parts but EOE has indicated that all the parts anyone offers come from basically the same Chinese factory, this has led people to sometimes get duds but all my shit has worked out well

The easy mods are upgrading the storage and the battery, check out this dope video to see how to open it, I followed it and scratched up both my hands and the device but non retards probably won't

I did not do the screen but supposedly its not a huge pain in the ass either, it was awesome at the time (edit to add, i mean that the screen worked well and still does), but then I said "I wanna do bluetooth and stuff, I'm confident in my ability" and ended up breaking the bluetooth module I purchased, so I bought a prebuilt backplate that had the bluetooth and USB-C from EOE

I had a ton of help putting it together from my dad, I’d like to think I’m good with small electronics, but I know he is and it was a good opportunity to spend time with him

Sweet, I'd love to have that kind of modded iPod
The first set of mods, just using a little spudgy to open the backplate and then adding the new flash hardware and battery, was dead simple, like novice-intermediate levels of difficulty at most

The hardest part was sandwiching stuff together, layering it so it all fit nicely, I wasn't bold enough to get a (physically) bigger battery so that one was relatively modest in size, lasted forever though

For assembly it was just a matter of "this thing goes here, really really carefully extract this and then reattach", and then I used double sided tape to secure stuff

The really cool part was the flash hardware, I used one from these bad motherfuckers and I thought I fucked it up somewhere with how simple it was, the board uses the same ribbon cable as the OG hard drive, the hardest part was using iTunes to smash my nuts in the car door over and over but I don't think you have to with how good Rockbox is now (the little installer apparently does the flashing and stuff for you now)

The second set of mods with the new backplate was just that but more, some parts of it I didn't see (my dad finished putting it back together) and we got a bigger battery too

Like, I could have gotten a newer device that was probably open source and whatnot but its a fun story and a neat device, and it makes me happy 🤷‍♂️

Oh shit, we need to keep this one a secret so it doesn’t stop getting updated like kimeno did. After a while kimeno stopped working properly so uploaded content wasn’t accessible

a car stereo that can read memory cards.
As recently as 2022 Toyota still couldn't field a "premium" sound system with a competent in-dash MP3 player even in their luxury trims.

Last time I tried one in a friend's car, beyond it spending 20 minutes to scan a 64GB flash drive, if you want to search by title/artist or even just browse the file structure, the car couldn't be moving. It literally grayed out the buttons allowing you to do anything besides "previous/next track, pause" if you were going faster than 5 MPH in the name of "safety." The best part is it still did this even if a passenger was present (it had a separate sensor to enable/disable the passenger airbag based on occupancy).

Fuck that shit. He hated that fucking thing and never used it for MP3s. It was all bluetooth audio + competent portable phone app or tablet instead.

I don't know how car manufacturers have managed to stay so fucking far out of touch on the car stereo front. They're just so consistently, persistently fucking terrible at it.

I came across that site on Xitter a few days ago; it's a new-ish alternative to Kemono, although it only seems to be archiving stuff from Patreon and Pixiv at the moment.

If you've ever used Kemono, you already know that the site is packed with a metric ton of porn.
Thanks, I actually managed to find something I was looking for (not porn!).

Gen Z has this really weird habit of buying things from 15-20 years ago like PSPs, Nintendo DSes and iPods, and then acting smug about owning it
Reminds me of when companies like Nintendo and Sega were releasing their own "minis" and every normalfag had to jump on that for some retarded reason acting like it was the greatest gift from God himself.

Meanwhile I just blank-stared at all of them going ".......... you can just emulate all of that on your computer you know".

You can, but unless you get a higher end controller and spend a decent amount of time setting it up it’s not as great. People want Jellyfin and you’re trying to sell them VLC.

For NES games? Are you fucking high? Any cheapo USB controller will do the job just fine.

That was the stupidest fucking excuse I've ever heard and you should fucking kill yourself for even THINKING about using that as a reply.
Even a proper nes controller is better than the cheap shit with unreliable buttons. Games aren’t fun when the buttons don’t click properly just because you were slightly off center.

For most people the entire experience is important. People want Netflix, not a hard drive where the file names are barely legible and the files are in nonstandard formats. For games the Mini NES and Mini SNES represent an all in one solution where you literally just plug it in and play your games, not having to spend a bunch of time futzing with patches and configurations.

And in this era fully offline electronics are literally a luxury item. Not having to deal with ads or updates or things constantly being a bit broken. It’s why iPods are in vogue and why even CDs are making a comeback.

I downloaded this documentary and have stored it for 16 years but you know, why?
Because it's hosted on Youtube, which cheerfully deletes content literally all the time without notice, recourse, or (effective/accessible) appeal, for any and/or no reason whatsoever, including the whims of whichever grievance grifters are upset about [specific topic] that day.

If you watch something and find it has value of any kind, keep a local copy yourself. If you ever think it should be important for another human being to watch it, preserve it yourself, becaue you cannot rely on others to do so. At least if you misplace, damage or lose it yourself you'll know why/how, and it was at least ostensibly more under your own control than relying on the world's least-reliable video hosting site to archive things you value.

world's least-reliable video hosting site
The only two places that I find "reliable" are YouTube and Kiwifarms, but it massively depends what you post when it's YouTube. YouTube happily hosts your literally inoffensive content, such as: news broadcasts, golfing tournaments, home video, those will last literally forever. Curse once in your video and the chances of having the video remain online drops by over 90%. Having something copyrightable drops that down below the millionth percentile. - I don't trust Vimeo, Odyssee, Rumble, whatever the fuck, so, so much less.

That's what this is for https://hackaday.com/2023/02/21/youtube-as-infinite-file-storage/

I used to use Discord as an infinite file storage bucket, where you'd basically get AWS speeds and reliability for free, which also acted as a way to share files over URLs outside of Discord itself. But then some very ANNOYING STUPID FAGGOT HOMOSEXUALS deliberate tech"geniuses" thought it was a good idea to shout into the world: "How to make Discord your own personal file host". Now they've added a million safeguards, trackers and tokens to file URLs to make damn sure this doesn't happen again. I hate TikTok poser faggots so much it's unreal.
