I 'get it', I think it's pretty easy to get. Ralph is a failed journalist, criminal, drug addict, alcoholic degenerate and then sees a successful journalist like Thompson who was also an alcoholic and thinks "hey that's me! I'm cool like him"

The most amusing part is Ralph has never read any books, not even any by HST. He’s easily watched FALILV twenty plus times. I’m sure he owned a copy of the book with Johnny Depp on the cover but could only skim a few pages at best. Any books Ralph owned but never read got tossed into a dumpster in Richmond. I doubt he even bothered to abandon them in Harry’s garage.
For a guy that supposedly blathers on about politics you’d think he would take an interest in Thompson’s political reporting, which is what really made him famous, but I doubt Ralph could make it through ten pages of any book without picture pages.
Thompson’s son apparently wrote a book about a decade after his suicide. He was very clear about how Thompson was incontinent and couldn’t really live independently anymore at age 67. It was all due to chronic alcoholism. He made a point to write about it so people understood the price HST paid for his substance abuse. It was the major reason he offed himself.
Ralph is just racing to beat his idol, not in any professional capacity because that’s impossible, but to be a decrepit drunk who pisses himself at age 37 instead of 67.
