Director Jason Reitman revealed on Tuesday that he was called to direct and co-write an upcoming new Ghostbusters movie that follows the original 1984 film directed by his own father, Ivan Reitman, Entertainment Weekly reports. “Finally got the keys to the car,” Jason tweeted.

But before you can say “who ya gonna call?” the backlash percolated online.

In a few months, Sony Pictures plans to begin shooting the film slated for a summer 2020 release, with the older Reitman as producer this time.

“This is the next chapter in the original franchise. It is not a reboot. What happened in the ‘80s happened in the ‘80s, and this is set in the present day,” Jason told EW. “We have a lot of wonderful surprises and new characters for the audience to meet,” he continued.

It’s too early to tell who’s part of the cast, who will be the new characters, and what the plot will be about. However, it’s also highly unlikely the original actors like Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd, and Ernie Hudson will star.

Meanwhile, Jason has reportedly “begun testing teenagers for four mystery roles,” according to sources, says Variety. Sources cited by the Hollywood Reporter even went so far as to say he’s looking to cast two boys and two girls. The project was supposedly so covert, the studio even used fake title “Rust City” to “keep the news under wraps until plans were ready to be unveiled,” Varietyadds.

One thing’s for sure, according to EW: It won’t be related to Sony Pictures’ 2016 all-female Ghostbusters reboot directed by Paul Feig, and which starred Kate McKinnon, Leslie Jones, Kristen Wiig, and Melissa McCarthy.

Even with very little information about the new installment in the famous franchise, already, Tuesday’s announcement of a Ghostbusters “sequel” did not sit well with users on Twitter for different reasons.

For starters, a lot of people are disappointed the all-female reboot is not slated for a sequel.

What upsets some is how it appears that Ghostbusters’ producers are pandering to people (read: sexist males and other haters) who didn’t want the all-female reboot in the first place, and who will then consider this “winning”:

As to be expected, a lot are calling this reboot unnecessary, and even self-proclaimed fans of the entire Ghostbustersfranchise are among them. As @gracerandolph tweets, “So what if it’s in the same ‘universe’?! If new #Ghostbusters doesn’t star #BillMurray #DanAkroyd #ErnieHudson #SigourneyWeaver … nobody cares.”
The only apparent good news this time around: At least the backlash to the latest installment isn’t as sexist.

As a Ghostbusters fan since childhood, I’ll leave this here: “The Ghostbusters universe is big enough to hold a lot of different stories,” Reitman told EW. I daresay truly devoted fans will watch any iteration of this classic.

Not into the teen cast thing. Hell, I didn't like teen movies when I was a teen. But I'm glad it's mixed gender. that way no one can complain. I wonder if there will be a token black? They'll need to cover their bases by making her the nerdiest one this time. Leslie Jones was just a ghetto ass subway worker. She always plays the same sort of character and by all accounts it appears as if she isn't acting.
They just need to do a live-action version of 1997's Extreme Ghostbusters:

I saw one episode of that show. It was glorious. They all went into a haunted house, and, as everyone else ran up the stairs, the wheelchair guy goes "I'll check down here!"

GHOSTBUSTERS 2016 DIRECTOR SUPPORTS LESLIE JONES GHOSTBUSTERS 3 COMMENTS
20 hours ago by: Mike Sprague

Earlier this week we passed along the news that GHOSTBUSTERS (2016) actress Leslie Jones was not happy about director Jason Reitman's upcoming GHOSTBUSTERS 3 (that's what we'll call it until we have an official name). The actress didn't hold back on her thoughts of the upcoming sequel saying:

So insulting. Like, fuck us. We didn't count. It’s something Trump would do. (Trump's voice)”Gonna redo ghostbusters, better with men, will be huge. Those women ain’t ghostbusters” ugh so annoying. Such a dick move. And I don’t give a fuck I’m saying something!!

And today we have word that GHOSTBUSTERS 2016 co-writer/director Paul Feig has not only come to Jones' defense but offers up his own thoughts on the new movie as well. The director and HEAVYWEIGHTS star took to Twitter to say that Jones spoke her truth and he supports her, and he is very open to Reitman's new version of GHOSTBUSTERS but he's also sad that the 2016 team may not get to bust again.

Specifically, Paul Feig writes:

An absolute honest to God never-ending supply of bullshit and hate from these trolls. Leslie spoke her truth and I support her. I am very open to Jason’s new version but am also sad that our 2016 team may not get to bust again. We all are. We’re forever proud of our movie.

If nothing else, I think Feig and his 2016 team can take solace in the fact that if the studio wanted a sequel to their version of GHOSTBUSTERS, they would still greenlight one. I don't think that having one GHOSTBUSTERS movie in the works means Sony will abandon all other possibilities. After all, GHOSTBUSTERS, SPIDER-MAN, and now I guess JUMANJI are only a few solid franchises they have going. What do YOU think? Let us know below!

For those of you that might not know, the all-female GHOSTBUSTERS movie followed this synopsis:

Paranormal researcher Abby Yates (Melissa McCarthy) and physicist Erin Gilbert are trying to prove that ghosts exist in modern society. When strange apparitions appear in Manhattan, Gilbert and Yates turn to engineer Jillian Holtzmann for help. Also joining the team is Patty Tolan, a lifelong New Yorker who knows the city inside and out. Armed with proton packs and plenty of attitudes, the four women prepare for an epic battle as more than 1,000 mischievous ghouls descend on Times Square.

GHOSTBUSTERS (2016) was directed by Paul Feig from a screenplay written by Katie Dippold and Feig based on the original film by Ivan Reitman, Dan Aykroyd, and Harold Ramis. Reitman and Amy Pascal produced the reboot/sequel and it starred Melissa McCarthy, Kristen Wiig, Kate McKinnon, Charles Dance, Michael Kenneth Williams, Chris Hemsworth, and the above-mentioned Leslie Jones.

No one gives a fuck what Paul Fag has to say.

Reading his treatment for his Ghostbusters film from the Sony email hack was a painful experience. I pity him; how awful it must be to trapped in *that* mind. What a hack! He'll go far in Hollywood.

I'm calling it, she's going to be the new Egon.

DOA. Abandon all hope ye that trespass beyond this post.

Not only does no one give a shit what Paul Feig says, but anyone who uninronically uses the phrase "spoke her truth" should be disregarded. It's the written word version of an Anime Avatar or Fedora.

The actress didn't hold back on her thoughts of the upcoming sequel saying:

So insulting. Like, fuck us. We didn't count.

lol they corrected her shitty spelling for the article

She was the most sensible one, she was scared of the ghosts and worried about money and normal shit like that. The rest of them just gave up on whatever goals they were supposed to have (restoring their academic reputation, studying the science of the ghosts, proving ghosts were real IIRC?) and just goofed around like they were in a bad SNL skit. If they'd given her more lines like "Nope... don't piss off the ghost..." and fewer lines like "AW HELL NAW" she'd have been a pretty good character. Not enough to save the movie but it'd be something.

Well, a new Egon is 100% necessary.

By the way, I know this will get me some red crosses, but for me Holtzmann was kinda the "best" character of the 2016 abomination (ignoring the uberlesbian jokes, of course). She looks neat.

It would have been cool if she was Egon's niece or something like that.

Edit: typos and shit.
Holtzmann as far as I could tell was made specifically for the Tumblr crowd. I went into that movie trying to keep an open mind, considering it'd been thoroughly spoiled by then, and hoping to find a little ghost of Egon in there somewhere...and nah.
She's just too

something. I dunno. She grated on me somehow. Yet Leslie Jones was a little more relatable, despite her shit behavior offscreen.
Holtzmann looks neat, but she fell flat characterwise for me. Hell, most of them did largely because all the women had to be The Best and Totally Rad And Awesome, whilst all the men were idiotic sexist pigs, full stop. That shit was old years ago.

My turn for some negrates =p
The teen characters thus far sound like stereotypical protags of any YA flick tbh. As long as they don't stray into GB16 territory, I think they'll do okay, they just won't be the most stellar kids on film.
