Director Jason Reitman revealed on Tuesday that he was called to direct and co-write an upcoming new Ghostbusters movie that follows the original 1984 film directed by his own father, Ivan Reitman, Entertainment Weekly reports. “Finally got the keys to the car,” Jason tweeted.

But before you can say “who ya gonna call?” the backlash percolated online.

In a few months, Sony Pictures plans to begin shooting the film slated for a summer 2020 release, with the older Reitman as producer this time.

“This is the next chapter in the original franchise. It is not a reboot. What happened in the ‘80s happened in the ‘80s, and this is set in the present day,” Jason told EW. “We have a lot of wonderful surprises and new characters for the audience to meet,” he continued.

It’s too early to tell who’s part of the cast, who will be the new characters, and what the plot will be about. However, it’s also highly unlikely the original actors like Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd, and Ernie Hudson will star.

Meanwhile, Jason has reportedly “begun testing teenagers for four mystery roles,” according to sources, says Variety. Sources cited by the Hollywood Reporter even went so far as to say he’s looking to cast two boys and two girls. The project was supposedly so covert, the studio even used fake title “Rust City” to “keep the news under wraps until plans were ready to be unveiled,” Varietyadds.

One thing’s for sure, according to EW: It won’t be related to Sony Pictures’ 2016 all-female Ghostbusters reboot directed by Paul Feig, and which starred Kate McKinnon, Leslie Jones, Kristen Wiig, and Melissa McCarthy.

Even with very little information about the new installment in the famous franchise, already, Tuesday’s announcement of a Ghostbusters “sequel” did not sit well with users on Twitter for different reasons.

For starters, a lot of people are disappointed the all-female reboot is not slated for a sequel.

What upsets some is how it appears that Ghostbusters’ producers are pandering to people (read: sexist males and other haters) who didn’t want the all-female reboot in the first place, and who will then consider this “winning”:

As to be expected, a lot are calling this reboot unnecessary, and even self-proclaimed fans of the entire Ghostbustersfranchise are among them. As @gracerandolph tweets, “So what if it’s in the same ‘universe’?! If new #Ghostbusters doesn’t star #BillMurray #DanAkroyd #ErnieHudson #SigourneyWeaver … nobody cares.”
The only apparent good news this time around: At least the backlash to the latest installment isn’t as sexist.

As a Ghostbusters fan since childhood, I’ll leave this here: “The Ghostbusters universe is big enough to hold a lot of different stories,” Reitman told EW. I daresay truly devoted fans will watch any iteration of this classic.

I love how the "fans" of the 2016 movie are all like "So they're just throwing those characters away?!"

Oh. All of the sudden, NOW you care about continuity ... Funny!

I've always liked James Rolfe. I gained a huge amount of respect for him when the media absolutely went for his jugular after he said that he wouldn't watch or review the movie. Despicable things were even said about his wife at the time.

James didn't respond to a damn thing that was thrown at him. Didn't apologize, didn't bite back. In fact, one of the next videos he posted was something about Ghostbusters 3 (a video concerning the original cast). Dude just kept doing his thing unapologetically, didn't take any bait, and acted as if none of the awful things they said about him ever happened. Didn't give those assholes the time of day.

What a class act and a major boss.

And whaddya know, despite all the slings and arrows he's still going strong on a business he built with his own two hands. Dude spent like a month hanging out with Macaulay Culkin. Is every person set up the same way to avoid a shit storm like that?

No, but I think anyone can benefit from the lesson that no matter who you are your time is better spent not engaging with hysterics whatsoever.

So I gotta say, the whole thing about it being kid ghostbusters ain’t exactly a bad idea. I mean you could have the plot center around a group of kids who each have their own history of being harassed by ghosts, and they’re trying to find their own way to deal with the problems but because they don’t fully understand what they’re doing they end up in deep shit and right when it looks like it’s about to be over for them someone steps in and manages to dispatch all of the ghosts without much trouble. Once the snap out of their shock they follow the dude after he runs off and end up at the old firehouse. They see three guys lounging around, kids get excited at all the gear they see, ask if they can use it to save the people they care about from the ghost epidemic. The three guys reveal themselves to be the original heroes from all those years ago, they refuse to let the kids fight the ghost because it’s too dangerous, they tell the tragic story about how they lost Egon in a case years ago, kids eventually prove themselves and they work their way up through there. I think it’s a neat idea, it’s got lots of potential if they know how to work with it.

That all being said, if I see even one scene that involves flossing so help me God I will throw my massive pile of overpriced junk food at the screen, headbutt the usher, knock over a few kids in the hallway, and fuck off right outta there.

one thing I found interesting from the Milo and Lisle Jones fued
Lislie jones is in Hollywood with tons of power, from SNL fan base, celebs friends, online fans etc..
And Milo was just a small political commentator who you would think had a small fan base with little power
But that wasn't the case
Kind of makes to think maybe these Celebs have a smaller fan base than people think
and Milo is someone they fear and need to get rid off, thus Milo getting kicked off lots of online sites

Much ado about nothing. They made a really shitty film. So they're going back to what worked with the kid of the original director helming it.

I know Jones endured some brutal trolling so she's probably very sensitive about it all, but hey, it's show business toots. Your film lost money. What do you expect the producers to do, throw good money after bad?

It must be nice to be Leslie Jones. You repeatedly fall ass-backwards into money and connections; get to send harassment and threats of violence at little peasants just because they don't want to see your movie and have your abominable behavior not only not punished but actively encouraged by $100 billion corporate monopolies, the news media, and a thousand millionaires in hollywood; and through it all get to play the race card as an excuse without having it examined by internet and media institutions that wield more power over the world than most governments. All the powers of an oppressor and the PR of a victim, talk about privilege.

Plot Twist - but when the movie releases it won't be a movie, it will just be a Let's Play of the GhostBusters video game cut down to about two and a half hours.

You know... I do find Leslie Jones funny sometimes. When she's being real and ranting about some fucking weird thing where she's actually being self deprecating, she can be hilarious.

Unfortunately, she got propped up as the perfect victim, who totes owned the haters, but also was in super serious danger from them. That meant half the country had to act like she was perfect in all things suddenly. I think that went to her head.

Ghostbusters 2016 was a completely forgettable hollywood outing, with a weird add-on of "fuck you misogynists for not liking it!". So of course half the people who sat through it, halfheartedly watching while playing on their phones, declared it was an orgasmic delight the likes of which we'd never see again on this earth.

Usually, the response to a movie losing lots of money isn't "Well shit let's just do it again". And uh... throwing Trump in.... yeah that's TDS

Worst part is that Leslie Jones was the only remotely not shitty thing in Cisbusters. Her chimping out like this just makes what little appeal her shitstain film had vanish.

Always wondered what exactly a Sloar was. Now I feel like I need to track the game down.
Its worth tracking down for almost everything. The level with the stone cherubs is a real bitch though. Also...

Apparently they argued over whether they would use a Torb or a Sloar for the game.

She won’t have to complain about it being all male now

As we all know, director Ivan Reitman’s son Jason will be helming the upcoming GHOSTBUSTERS 3 (or whatever they're calling it) and the new movie will go back to the continuity of the first two films. And today we have some more details on just what we can expect to see when the movie lands in Summer 2020. None of this has been confirmed yet, but the info comes from trusted sources so I guess we'll eventually see what shakes out.

First, Borys Kit of THR revealed over on Twitter that "The main characters will be 4 teens: 2 boys, 2 girls, per sources."

And We Got This Covered laid out a few more details regarding the two central characters, a young boy and girl. The young girl will evidently "cross paths with the aforementioned boy at some point in the film and they quickly become friends." She’s 12 years old and "an insanely smart kid. However, she often has a hard time interpreting and expressing emotions and speaks with a flat delivery that makes her observations humorous.”

Add to that the site reports that "though she wants to connect with others, she struggles with interpreting how her family and friends feel and has difficulty sharing her own feelings. Her science acumen is said to prove invaluable throughout the story, though."

Sounds like Aspergers to me. But I'm not a doctor. As for the other main character, the boy will be 13 years old and is said to be "passionate about fantasy and conspiracy theories. Furthermore, he apparently approaches every situation with unbridled excitement for the unknown" and he "will narrate life in real time, adding descriptive color to the people he meets."

As for the plot, the film is said to focus on a family who moves back home to a small town. While there, they begin to learn more about who they are and the secrets of the town itself.

That's all we know at the moment, but I'm thinking we can expect to see all of this tie back to the original team of Ghostbusters in some way. But again, who knows? I also think these details make sense in that - following all the controversy surrounding the "all-female" GHOSTBUSTERS movie from 2016, Sony is splitting the difference and making the cast half male and half female. Smart move? I guess We'll find out come Summer 2020.

I'm calling it, she's going to be the new Egon.

Well, a new Egon is 100% necessary.

By the way, I know this will get me some red crosses, but for me Holtzmann was kinda the "best" character of the 2016 abomination (ignoring the uberlesbian jokes, of course). She looks neat.

It would have been cool if she was Egon's niece or something like that.

Edit: typos and shit.

I dunno, to me they were just trying way too hard with her. She had to be the ABSOLUTE BEST EVER. She was kind of a boring character to me. Also I think you mean niece, not nephew, unless someone recently got a sex change.

I sort of liked Holtzmann too. I think it was done for the wrong reasons but it was nice to see a version of the female nerd archetype who wasn't glammed up to the nines or utterly repulsive (queef jokes aside). She could've made a character I wanted to know more about and watch more onscreen. Pity McKinnon was given half a bowl of muddy Play-Doh to work with for material.

Not into the teen cast thing. Hell, I didn't like teen movies when I was a teen. But I'm glad it's mixed gender. that way no one can complain. I wonder if there will be a token black? They'll need to cover their bases by making her the nerdiest one this time. Leslie Jones was just a ghetto ass subway worker. She always plays the same sort of character and by all accounts it appears as if she isn't acting.
