I would say there are three types of people: good, evil and neutral. Good people do more good than harm, evil people do more harm than good and neutral people do none or do equal amounts of good and harm. I think most people are neutral.

Very few people do evil things with the intent of being evil. Most would much rather see their friends happy than their enemies suffer, for example.
A lot of our perception of human character comes down to actor/observer bias:
-your actions are a result of circumstance.
-others' actions are a result of their character.

"I didn't do the bad thing because I'm a bad person, I just had no better alternative."
"He would have done literally anything other than what he did if he weren't a bad person."
Etc.

See, there are three kinds of people: dicks, pussies and assholes.

Pussies think everyone can get along and dicks just want to fuck all the time without thinking it through.

But then you got your assholes. And all the assholes want is to shit all over everything.

So pussies may get mad at dicks once in a while because, pussies get fucked by dicks. But dicks also fuck assholes.

And if they didn't fuck the assholes, you know what you'd get?

People are capable of either. and you never know who is who. If you assume that everyone is good you're in trouble. If you assume that everyone is evil, you're on your own. Neither is a safe place to stand.

Actions are either good or bad. People are the sum of their actions so people are good and bad (but not or). Morality is too difficult to quantify so everyone is a bit of both, except for the extremes you can't really tell if someone does more good than evil or vice versa (even then, if you are to believe what western culture peddles, that humanity is evil by default, that would make hitler, stalin and mao the best people of all time).

I think the answer you want is given an infinite timeline, good will ultimately win. Not because people are special or God orders it, but simply that being good is a more efficient strategy than evil.

and this is all ignoring the difficulty in defining what is good and what is evil.
