New game from the devs that brought us the first good Sonic game in ages created on the new Star Engine. You play as a lady that beats the crap out of penguins with a magic yo-yo and it looks pretty fun. Is anyone else interested in this?

Definitely interested. Sonic Mania was a fucking banger and it certainly looks fun. The question is more how well will it play since the skillset to make a good 2d platformer doesn't exactly translate for a 3d one.

They can probably pull it off. Sonic Mania showed that they have a good understanding of platforming mechanics and level design, so I don't see why they would be unable to do that in 3D.

This looks pretty good but something about the main character's eyes really puts me off. It's like Impact from Goemon.
They look like she's about to cry, so it awkwardly juxtaposes with her big smile and the happy theme.

Game looks great otherwise. Colors are vivid and terrific, but not overbearing. I'll keep an eye on this game.

Momentum-based gameplay could be fun to mess around with but by God the artstyle is ugly. All the colors are a drab pastel that is grating to look at and blends together in a way that reminds me of Corporate Memphis.

And I agree the main character's eyes are weird-looking.

The characters are fine but the environments look like they came out of globohomo illustrations. I hope they can add better lighting effects (make the colors less monochromatic) that fix this before the game comes out.

She is supposed to resemble a mime or a clown.

They had me sold when they had the main character use a yoyo, shit is fucking cash as a video game weapon for me
never underestimate the power of a Yo-Yo

Incidentally, that info seems to be incorrect according to a bunch of articles online 🤷‍♂️

First time I played a game where you use a YoYo was Startropics on the NES, and back then I thought it was cool.

Ehh... I don't like the visuals. The main character looks like a bad 90's Japanese mascot character like Astal fused with a 90's Eurojank turd like Zool.

And the penguins and world look generic as hell, zero personality. Even the music feels boring. Too bad too, because the gameplay seems solid.

I might try it it on a deep discount some day.

The aesthetics are on point and it looks like a Gamecube game developed by Treasure. So there's that. Personally, I never got into 3D platformers even back in the day. I rented Mario 64, completed it, replayed it through emulation a few times and beat it. Beat Conker's Bad Fur Day. But I'm just not too into the genre.

I'm also not feeling the aesthetics either, but it seems to move well and Sonic Mania still has goodwill in my heart, so I am definitely willing to keep it in my radar and see what the talk is when it comes out.

Not sure how I feel about the art style, but the gameplay looks alright. Bit and pieces of it remind me of Chameleon Twist, if anybody still remembers that game.
I came here to make a Rocket: Robot On Wheels reference, but I think you might have me beat in the obscure N64 games department.

So instead I'll just say what I was going to say before I watched the trailer: why not just make Sonic Mania 2? Become the Sonic Team that Sonic Team refuses to be.

Why penguins?

I think it looks pretty good, though I agree with others that the "single-color light pastel" aesthetic isn't the best. I feel like if you wanna do the mono-color look, you should go full cel-shaded like Killer7. A lot of indie games nowadays seem to just slap on colors instead of textures and call it a day.

Methinks the japs got very salty they got upstaged HARD by the indie division since it's the only way I can explain them not being given Sonic Mania 2 when it's easy money in the bank. It's not the first time petty shit happens in Sega between the Japanese and US divisions.

I think it just needs to look a bit brighter and more vibrant and the shadows need to be stronger.

They were actually going to. Sonic Showrunners was going to be developed by the Sonic Mania team, but something happened and Azure, the developers of Balan Wonderworld, ended up taking over that project.

Could this be more fagotry from Naka? I don't remember if the company is linked to him directly or not.
I don't know, the new Sonic game looks alright. Probably because it wasn't developed by the Sonic Team.

Looks like an updated version of the retro levels from Sonic Generations with some obvious inspiration from Mania. Hopefully the Balan Wonderworld devs can redeem themselves with this, because that game was a disaster.
