FLORENCE COUNTY, SC (WMBF) - An elementary school in Florence County is apologizing for a recent Facebook post.
Royall Elementary School said a picture it posted on Wednesday showed “an insensitive disregard for the current challenges our Hispanic population faces.”
The picture showed teachers dressing up for “Royall Cantina.” Most of the teachers were dressed in sombreros, but two of them dressed up as U.S. Border Patrol agents in front of a wall.

The school said it is hoping to move on from the mistake and have a good school year, which started on Thursday.
“At Royall, we take great pride in our long-standing tradition of embracing and supporting every student who walks through the doors of our building,” the school’s statement reads. “Our staff is unanimously committed to celebrating the diversity of our families and ensuring that each and every student at Royall is successful, happy, and recognized for his or her unique culture and abilities.”
Meanwhile, Florence Democratic Party Chairman Isaac Wilson also issued a statement on the post, saying racism has no place in the community.
“I am appalled by the images shared by educated professionals but I am more disappointed that someone thought that this tasteless display was representative of Mexican culture,” Wilson’s statement reads. “In a time where we should be bringing communities together to solve issues that chronically challenge us like racism and bigotry, this type of tone deaf behavior cannot be tolerated.”
The school has taken the post in question down.
