He was a secular Turkish nationalist. The founder of modern Turkey would probably hate these people's guts for being a bunch of Islamic fags. He also hated the entire religion of Islam. Instead, it was completely detrimental to Turkey's national existence and had a bunch of Islamists literally shot.

From what I've noticed, this is largely a diaspora thing. Turks who are unfortunate enough to still be living in Turkey know how bleak the situation is on the ground.

Because you misconstrue the timelines and events. How can he both enacting a genocide and the be fighting the british in the gallipoli at the same time? There is the Armenian Genocide and the Turkish War of Independence post-WW2 which had an Armenian front. He was the commander at the second and very superficially connected at the first (technically. War of Independence was justified, first may not be (still combing through to make up my mind).

I dislike our methods of overzealous performative nationalism but lies are still lies. You shouldn't besmirch someone just on vibes alone. If you read his multiple days long address, now compiled as "Nutuk" (the speech), he himself criticizes Ottoman Empire's handling of the east and their other diaspora.

He did some non-minor stuff to kurds though admittedly but i doubt anyone here would care about kurds (brown & muslim) compared to armenians (brown & christian).

I say all this a devout christian that feels terrible about what happened to Armenians and visited there before.

It was a CIA project touse islamists to fight against communistm. Fetullah Gülen started his career in Anti-Communist organisations. then turned into a liberal islamic project and shown as a more modern and moderate islamist than erdogan (see the tv show designated survivor) but in reality most of them are deranged cultists and even erdogan seems more democratic than them. They accused generals to have child porn, then put those porns to the pc's they have abducted. they killed, bombed, blackmailed and fabricated to destroy many organizations and put their man inside them. Hope no country lives that humiliation ever.
 
I am actually sympathetic to the Turks here. For A lot of Westerners, it's commonplace to just handwave their historical figures and their past as nothing more than history or "X is problematic". It's refreshing to see a group of people actually treat their history with enough love to push back against anyone trying to say it's an issue to like them (the mod wasn't even correct in his analysis of Atatürk), to the point alot of Westerners are either confused as to why they are acting like this or doubling down

My only complaint is that the Turks were/are a bit annoying with how they pulled it off but still
