At worst it's a conveniently timed decision designed to stir up conversation to increase attention and thus potential sales.

Two things can be true at the same time. It's not directly a culture war thing because it's based on actual truth. But it's also stupid to not acknowledge that they 100% took the discourse into consideration as a marketing strategy. But because it's based on an actual historical figure, who tf cares, this isn't a little mermaid situation

Did they choose Yasuke because they’re interested in him from a historical perspective and believe he has potential for an engaging story, or did they grab the first google search result for “black samurai” because they wanted a black character but were limited to samurai?
Besides, there’s only one black samurai for me.

Yes, a retainer. Not samurai, not samurai class. He was an African retainer to Nobunaga who carried his shit, Nobunaga killed himself and he got deported. Very far from the We Wuz Samurai and shiet Ubisoft have reinvented him as.

Ubisoft is basically a company founded on Assassin's Creed historical revisionism. It's their bread and hummus (to use a term they'd like).

Nioh is also equal opportunity, because William Adams certainly didn't fight in the battle of Sekigahara. It comes down to who is more genuine, and any company is more genuine than Ubisoft, barring people like EA.
 
Updates in my playthrough.
The script is definitely closer to the Japanese GameCube.

In chapter 2 when Vivian introduces them, she calls them “ the shadow sisters” like in Japan instead of “shadow beauties” like in the original English. Only now Beldam takes issue with their relation being revealed rather than calling Vivian a tranny, to which Vivian says “but I like being called your sister”

But here’s where I see protest from Nintendo. They’re no longer the Shadie Sirens, just the Three Shadows. Which I choose to take as “they’re not all women, they can’t be sirens “

On another note, I have been switching in and out of the original soundtrack and I’m starting to prefer the new one better, especially for the battle theme. The new horn arrangement really gets me pumped.

For those playing with a mod like me, be warned that the punie AI is bugged in 60, which made that section annoying, but doable without having to turn off the frame rate.

Sweet Treat now drops 2 poison shrooms instead of3, making it easier, the spin jump is much MUCH faster, the cooling at Zest.Y’s is MUCH faster and can be skipped, the paper airplanes move faster, and the fast travel is more convenient.

I’m not gonna lie, so far, if you mod it for 60 fps, this is becoming my favorite version of the game. The original soundtrack badge is also dirt cheap and costs 0 BP which is nice if you want it
