Do you buy remakes? Do you hate remakes? Do you not care one way or the other? Explain your deep personal beliefs here.

Personally my vote is mostly for practicality. I don't have the room to have several old consoles set up, so if I can play a game I liked on a console that I already have hooked up and ready to go, I'll probably do it. This is especially true for handhelds which require no setup at all save for keeping them charged.

A sufficient amount of bonus content/graphical overhauling also helps. The Metroid Prime Trilogy is a great example of this. Better load times, better textures, native widescreen, motion controls if you're into that, and more. It's nice to see a classic shined up. Not changed, just improved visually, so you can really see things the way the developers intended but couldn't achieve on the limited hardware of the time.

Most remakes suck ass. Some remakes however, either add more than they remove or completely outdo the original in every way. When your remake becomes synonymous with quality remakes, then it's worth a buy.

Reboot, remake, remaster, demake... bleh. It all really depends what you're doing. 1oom is a great project but the current active maintainer's a CoC-sucking faggot. https://gitlab.com/Tapani_/1oom

I recently traversed the two realMYST iterations. PC doesn't run the new MYST. I guess that's a thing. Nervous about the FF6 pixel remaster coming soon. There's a game that doesn't need much polish. The balance on the FF2 remaster was almost unplayable.

In my opinion just having something on newer hardware, as opposed to being stuck on older hardware you might not have plugged in or even own at all anymore, alongside even something as basic as higher resolution and framerate, is worth the price of admission alone.

I think of it as along the lines of releasing movies on newer home video formats, you wouldn't refuse to have bought the Godfather on dvd because you already own it in VHS, would you?

I am not very fond of people going back and reimagining their work. Yes to re-releasing a game but no to any changes to the way the game functions. Make a sequel or better yet make a new game if you want to revisit or reimagine a design/scenario/story.

Also "too many poll options" should be added as a poll option.

yeah depends on the game and the remake
like Dragon Quest 1 by all means as someone who grinded through the NES one, you miss nothing by playing one of the nerfed ones like the GBC version

that's a little different in that Godfather was made with the intention of being seeing on a large film projection, not lolntsc
there's a lot of stuff that was literally built to take advantage of refresh rates and shit
like the RE remakes, they seem like nice enough games but even back to Gamecube they're clearly their own thing
then there's stuff like Metal Gear Solid Twin Snakes, like those fanmods that drop SMB3 levels 1:1 into the SMW engine, and it's really so far removed from the PS1 game that it's basically a cheat mode

For some older games I find the remakes fine (like the gba ports of classic final fantasy) but for modern remakes alot are just kinda bad. FInal Fantasy 7 Remake is padded to hell, Metroid Samus Returns is just a horrid game, RE2-3makes gimp some of the old games mechanics, ect.

Generally getting more games on a platform isn't a bad thing. No reason you can't have a disc with a bunch of PS2 games upscaled on PS3/4 and even if they're barebones. As long as they're functional it gives you another way to play those games, especially from a disc. Even better is when a game's playability is actually improved upon such as the N64 Legend of Zelda games on 3DS getting a much more playable 30 FPS and Kingdom Hearts being 1080/60 on the PS4.

Adding new content can be hit or miss. Super Mario 64 DS has 3 new characters and new stars, but you can ignore it for the most part if you want a classic experience. Despite how much it's loved here, my friends who are into MGS kinda hate Twin Snakes for its changes, and I know that Final Fantasy VII Remake has some new story elements that rubbed people the wrong way. Be careful with what you add, and if a game still holds up just upscale it and make it run at the current gold standard framerate.

The best example I can give of a really underwhelming remake actually isn't even out yet: Advance Wars 1+2 ReBoot Camp. The graphics look really nice and I'm a sucker for good high res 2D art, but it's $60 for 2 GBA games. Even if they add good online play and a much better map maker it will still be worth nowhere near $60.

Originals, only because I play on old ass laptop.
Otherwise, I don't see a problem with remakes. Older games are harder to get into because of graphics, so making them more appealing to newer generations of gamers is always a good idea in my eyes.

Funny you mention REmake because that's an exception for me, played the HD release and didn't like it because too many of the backgrounds are pixelated, so now I stick with the Cube original on my CRT, however I understand that's not an option for most people and I'm glad the game is still readily available inferior version or not.

Twin Snakes is another exception, I'm one of those people that don't like it, too many changes, first person aiming breaks the game etc.

But of course there's always going to be exceptions.

yeah for me Twin Snakes is like "this eliminates the challenge and I'm just going around killing shit and it's awesom- wait why is this bad exactly"

It's fine if you want an alternate take on an old favorite, I just don't think it should be people's first experience with MGS.

Depends on the game, the developers, the remake, and muh nostalgia. I would refuse to touch a Morrowind remake because it'd probably have everything I like about Morrowind removed. A remake of Thief Dark Project has an almost 100% chance of being pure ass. If The Ooze got a remake, I'd be excited. The Ooze is a great concept for a game that deserves to go 3D.

Has to be on a case by case basis, sometimes even a 1:1 remake that's almost completely true to the original is still a shittier version, I feel this way about every Bluepoint remake

but of course there;s stuff like the Resident Evil 1 remake that are exemplary
