I'm pretty sure they can't even adapt ideas and theories from fanfics, let alone the fanfics themselves, because that would be classed as being derivative. To the point where some series' writers are forbidden from reading that stuff. I know that was at least the case for the Friendship is Magic writers. So if there was an official Sonichu movie, Pokemon and Sega would need permission from Chris Chan. That's probably one reason why so much big budget fan content gets DMCA'dSo as the world's main experts in Sonichu, what's the answer to Lyle's question?
If Nintendo (Pokemon Company etc) and Sega joined forces to make a Sonichu movie, could they, legally? Do they require permission from Chris?
And if Lyle wrote a fanfic and they made a movie out of it, would they need his permission?
My understanding (probably wrong) is that they can use their intellectual property as they like. I know the point is you can't profit from your own works that are derivative of their IPs without their authorization but I don't know if they can simply take and use the derivative works. What I'm pretty sure they can't do is take the events of your fanfic and adapt them. I mean, there's that thing with Penders where he sued because concepts and characters similar to his Echidna shit from his comics were used in that shitty Sonic game where he turned into a werewolf thing. I think they settled?
