@SlipNHonkMach2 I’ve always wondered why it’s been NOW that there’s a push for One Piece in the west. I’ve just chalked it up to Netflix and the publisher mentioning how Oda is hyping up how the story is reaching its climax.
I think there's some truth to the Covid lockdowns angle allowing newcomers to jump in and catch up to everyone. In fact, we were in the middle of the Oden flashback when the lockdowns began, and it was
just as we learned a bit more about Roger and his reaction to finding the One Piece right at the start of 2020. That was a big deal to the fanbase, and it was catching attention in anime spaces, on top of news coming out that One Piece was (probably)
coming to an end within the next few years, even though that was people taking it out of proportion because learning about what the One Piece
is is not the automatic end to the series. Also just because Oda was making a guesstimate of when he was wrapping up the series doesn't mean it was actually going to happen as he says.
Personally, I noticed the sudden increase in attention and push for One Piece in the West definitely picked up in speed right as Luffy awakened in March 2022 which is also when the world was just
finally opening back up. Luffy, it turns out, is now a literal beacon of hope and freedom in-universe and with fans, and in this cynical world where modern entertainment is much more open about how much they hate audiences, that's considered
refreshing. Also doesn't hurt that Gear 5's reveal is essentially this generation's "Goku goes Super Saiyan", and has since become more common to see on merchandise now even though it's a huge fucking twist (but only after the anime caught up to that the following year). And of course, the live-action series debuted in 2023 pretty much shortly after Gear 5's anime debut. Oh, and then Saturn shows up on Egghead a couple months later in all his demonic
Jewish glory.
Likely just a huge coincidence, honestly, but the timing is just
too perfect. But really, I don't think we should be surprised by the sudden rise in popularity this past decade.
