I'd prefer an Egyptian actress, but if they can do Vivi, then fine.
There was not even a drop of subtlety in Alabaster with where it was meant to be so I think anyone complaining about an Egyptian actress would be being a smidge unreasonable.

I'd present reasoned arguments about saying it's meant to be Egypt but instead I'm just going to say Nefertari. And that there has to be Egyptian actresses out there willing to do the role and not using one would be incredibly stupid.

Robin is supposed to be russian, but I wonder if they will push on Oda hard to make it be some Ukranian uggo because Putler wins otherwise. I just don't want a Witcher Yennefer or Triss situation. The line was held pretty well with Nami but that might be the exception, because Robin is supposed to be smart that means she can't be attractive either, it will be some albino with a big wide nose instead of a flat sharp point.

I’m probably the only person here that doesn’t really think an SBS answer about the real world equivalents of characters would/will mean anything. Especially considering Oda said that Luffy would be from Brazil but his actor is Mexican, and Sanji is said to be French, but his actor is mixed, with a mom that’s British and his dad is Arab (Lebanese diaspora man from Sierra Leone).

Also, IIRC, Inaki Godoy was hand picked by Oda himself, so I don’t think there’ll be a lot of issues with casting here.

For the most part, I really don't follow that either. The most times I've been bringing it up is in the Netflix casting and they would have probably followed that as a guideline. Because Netflix casting. Even then, Oda seems to have a say, so whatever on that.

...Cept Franky. Franky is a big ol' American.

It likely won't. But for Alabaster specifically I could see nothing wrong with an Egyptian actress since it had so many Egyptian overtones it would be funny to see anyone saying otherwise.

Egyptian or a nigger that we are told is supposed to be Egyptian? That's the real question, I still remember the Cleopatra "documentary" that had Will Smith's chained harpy.

Aside from that, I still give 0 shits about the real life show.

On the Zeuz being easy mode for Nami... I think it can be a pretty fun fight, assuming they give Nami a full 1 v 1 without any sort of external factors bailing her out which I imagine will happen vs Blackbeard since that's the only time I expect proper 1v1 for the whole crew to ever happen again.

Honestly, I'd just like to avoid turning Vivi into this kind of monstrocity.

If I had to cast Vivi, I'd probably look for a southern Italian woman. Someone who can pull off the vaguely arabic look, but has a light enough complexion that the blue wig won't make her look retarded.

Honestly, nothing about the people making the live action makes me feel like I should be worried. Also, Oda’s a part of it, so it’s not like they can get away with any crazy deviations.

Given they got the actual voice actors to do the Japanese dub this feels like Oda's treating it as though he's getting an over priced theatrical performance rather than a live action show.

I just hope Vivi still says Mr. Bushido all the time, in the japanese way too. Netflix has to commit to Chopper but would they splurge for a CGI or even practical Karoo?

What do you mean by “overpriced theatrical performance”?
Every seen any of those One Piece performances where they get various people performing as the crew while other people do the dialogue?

This isn't specifically one of them but could not find a good example.

Theatrical was the wrong word but I could not find the right one. Usually happens at the theme parks and the like.

(for anyone who only glances at the video go to just before 8 minutes in. Luffy's entry is great)

You're thinking of the Premier Show at Universal Studios Japan. It's usually preceded by a "water battle". There also used to be a One Piece theme park in Tokyo Tower with its own show, but it closed due to COVID.

Edit: There have also been shows at Jump Festa. I believe Oda met his wife at one (she was playing Nami).

Thanks, those are the ones.

Oda considers the Netflix live action a more expensive version of those is the point I was flailing for.

Fuck that cyclops ass bitch.
How dare you!

That aside, ai generated translations of the chapter are out if anybody cares to look into them. translation is still kind of dodgy, but seems like the transmission has recovered with big robot getting back into action, Bonney does seem to have full nika power but got tuckered out very quickly, aside from that, just more of "lets get the hell out of here". If any deep lore drop happened, I didn't notice it or didn't understand it due to the spotty translation.

EDIT: Link to chapter https://ww10.readonepiece.com/chapter/one-piece-chapter-1119/
