Final Battle takes place with parts of Luffy’s score just coming back in until it’s completely done and drowns out Imu’s theme
Kill La Kill did it (not with the final battle but still)
Didn't Bleach do that with Aizen vs Ichigo?
Not really but they did cut off the character music mid way as something similar

That said One Piece tended not to use combat music too much which I thought worked quite well.

I had heard that the version of Ichigo's theme that got cut off there didn't appear in subsequent episodes but I'm not watching back through to verify that.
I'm not going to swear it made it into any of the arcs that immediately followed (filler aside) but it made it into the one with the other former substitute shinigami near the end of the arc.

Imagine Brooke's Devil Fruit powers allow him to negate the Gorosei's immortality so he just plays Luffy off while he fights.

You know, part of me thinks that only the Monster Trio will face the Gorosei. And adding even Sanji is probably being generous.

I don’t know, it feels like only Luffy, Zoro, and sometimes Sanji can get to face the major villains of an arc directly, while the rest only face the lackeys.

Or at least that’s how it ends up.

So was watching the latest Joy Boy Theories vid and one of the comments hit on something.

Imu is trapped. Imu is not free. The Nika Fruit was created by Imu’s wish to be free.
The only issue I can find is that Imu has ultimate power with the Gorosei as his minions and attack dogs. And every part of either of their appearances show them as unsympathetic pricks who sees the world as beneath them, and all must bow to their glory.

The whole “wish to be free” thing kind of makes Imu somewhat sympathetic, so Oda won’t do that. He’s pretty lacking in subtlety when it comes to characters to like and characters to hate. Imu is clearly in the latter camp.

Also, when the Gorosei talked about the true name of the Gum Gum, it was clear they didn’t want certain people to know what it really was or what it represented, if not the world at large.

It just doesn’t seem plausible that Imu would want a fruit formed by jealousy.

I can see that, but at the same time, Imu is still the true final boss. It's likely that even if it's true that fruit was his own conception, he's had almost a thousand years to grow to resent it. Death would be more of a mercy kill than a means to stop his evil plans at this point.

Sympathetic villains are a staple of OP, for certain Imu is one as well, yet a satisfactory defeat is sorely needed. I don't see redeeming sunshine and rainbows being the case.

I highly doubt Imu is being made sympathetic. Nothing has been shown to suggest that.

I almost expect Imu to explain himself only for Luffy to call him an idiot and give a solution that’s so simple and yet so stupid that Imu never thought about it.
"I was afraid that if I didn't clamp down on everything then the world would fall apart"
"You are a coward, I am gonna call you Crybaby Imu now, watch as I prove you wrong Crybaby"
