Episode opens with child Nami getting tattooed as part of joining Arlong's crew. She begins drawing his charts while manacled complete with him monologing over the scene summarising their arrangement including the price for the village.
Back in present day as we recall it ended last time with the fishmen attacking the village (off screen). The crew arrive to find it... burned down and everyone still alive. Why bother changing things if you're not even going to have the balls to kill someone?
Oh good. Time to ruin a good scene from the manga. Villagers turn up en mass and Genzo says to Nami,."Nojiko told us about your sacrifice. Can you ever forgive us?"
Way to ruin this part of the story Netflix. Really and truly. You guys suck donkey balls and I am glad you started this episode off as badly as possible. The villagers here have concluded since they can't buy their freedom they'll die trying. At which point and the Straw Hats go "no, it's our fight." At which point they back down like the glorified set dressing they have been reduced to.
Nojiko by the way does not get a single line of dialogue in this scene. Way to go Netflix, you made her black and removed her personality, leaving only a walking clump of exposition, most of it off screen. Truly you are progressive champions.
Title card is still nice, Arlong themed this time.
Off to Garp's ship where Nezumi is on board. Rat hat heads to Garp's cabin where he reacts to being questioned about Arlong by announcing that a vicious Straw Hatted killer is running wild in the area. Even Helmeppo joins Koby in calling BS to which Nezumi tries to pull rank to enforce his authority and Garp points out that position dick waving is pointless right now.
Back to Arlong Park (exterior) and a bunch of the fishmen's supplies spontaneously combust. I have to assume that's what happened because there's no other indication what made them do so. Choo tells people to stand ready after Luffy forces open the door and the crew adopt their fighting poses. Fight scene kicks off which would be much more impressive if there not actual water slides in the background making me feel like I'm watching Power Rangers vs the assorted minion monsters. Usopp puts a shot into Choo's face and I give both of them credit, them sprinting away with their respective expressions is reasonably close to the source.
Luffy and Nami are inside. Notice I have not mentioned Arlong yet because he has not shown up. In the map room Nami spells out that she was manacled to the desk as Luffy looks at those chains because having that spelt out is better storytelling right? Because viewers should never be made to accept that the characters are bright enough to put maps in a room with child sized manacles and Nami's time with the Arlong pirates together. As they begin to leave Arlong turns up, already with his sword. Because let's escalate straight to that.
Cut to a chase scene and again these two's facial expressions are great. No rice fields but at least the pursuit is through a forest with Choo's spat liquid shots being an okay effect. Back to AP (ext) Sanji and Zoro are dropping fishmen fairly rapidly. Back to the interior Arlong once again that slavery is justification for everything that he does. He was more fun when he was saying he was part of a superior race, that he also tries to claim he was going to let Nami remain part of his crew and enjoy the rewards of his rulership not just of East Blue but of all the seas of the world.
Arlong in the manga had a much more realistic idea of his limits. In this thing though the Marines have been so pathetic it seems plausible.
Also he says it's all thanks to Nami and she cries a bit. I have no idea why, at this point anger should be more in character but hey, strong female characters in Netflix right, not like those awful mangas for teenage boys from the 90s.
Arlong points his sword at Luffy and asks if he could have used her so well. Luffy of course says she's not a tool and breaks the sword which carries zero impact because Arlong never used it. It feels instead like the oversized prop it looked like. Luffy compares Arlong to Axe-Hand and Kuro because those are the only villains so far he's not ended up working with. Luffy tells Nami to flee and Arlong makes the most ineffectual attempt to stop her as Luffy essentially tickles him with a punch given there is no reaction from Arlong's actor.
Choo machine gun spits Usopp while he is in cover and an attempt by the sniper to fire back sees him tumbling down a ridge. Back at the kiddy pool Zoro's injuries are slowing him down leading to an acceptably in character Sanji taunt and riposte. The two exchange insults while Buggy mocks them and demands a return to his body. He's let loose and immediately gives that most devastating insult of modern script writing, two raised middle fingers, before he cuts and runs.
Buggy might be the third most poorly treated character in this. The actor could clearly do much more with better writing.
Choo finds what looks like a dead Usopp and calls it a day. And yes, the fake blood was ketchup in character. Credit to them they almost manage something close to the manga since rather than using nearby water Choo's been carrying a bottle of booze with him as his ammo. Usopp puts a special attack, exploding star (and of course he shouts it) and Choo flies back from the resulting explosion like a distillery exploded. Unfortunately Usopp does not commit the coup de grace with a hammer but he does optimistically assure himself that people will believe him.
Back at Arlong Park Kuroobi rocks up. I have no idea where he's been till now. Given both Zoro and Sanji are up this is going to be a lot less impressive than it was though at least him hurtling through the water to make his attack was interesting. Him being able to bare arm block swords in less impressive. Interior Luffy finally gets clear punch on Arlong cracking some teeth and we get a halfway interesting shot of Arlong the current lot breaking away and just casually regrowing them. Outside Kuroobi bounces these two around like stuffed toys and this is probably my biggest problem. None of the main characters and I included Garp in that feel half as impressive as they did in the source material. They were all impressive by East Blue standards which is why they were such a disruptive force to the crews operating there and that was why they handled as much as they could. Yet as soon as a serious Marine presence eyed them up in the form of Smoker they were out of their league. The level of ability they had was clear while also presenting a clear wall here it is nowhere near the same and given Smoker's turning up next season is going to make Garp look even more irrelevant.
Back to the fight, Luffy taunts Arlong that he needed Nami and starts trashing the map room. In the manga it was more that he did it because he wanted to destroy a place that was basically concentrated misery for his crewmate here it is literally Luffy's strategy, even admitting he cannot beat Arlong. Which yeah, I believe. At this point neither Luffy, Sanji nor Zoro have measured up even slightly to the fishmen leaders. They've barely landed three clean hits between them. So naturally we now need to ass-pull for them to win.
I will concede that Luffy adopting a more mobile method of fighting that causes Arlong to aid in the destruction of the room works. Shame we only get seconds of that.
Speaking of ass pulls Kuroobi insulted a woman so now Sanji gets a power attack and to shout his attacks. This is also less educational than the manga, failing to provide a translation. I am being petty now, don't care. Zoro notes that given Sanji also embracing that all great fighters call out their attacks means he'll fit in fine. Usopp arrives to find everyone already unconscious ass Nami flees the now shaking Arlong Park main building.
A very underwhelming Gum Gum Gatling sends Arlong into the wall and he screams that no-one can bring down Arlong Park despite clear structural evidence to the contrary. Luffy naturally decides a Gum Gum Battle Axe is the right reply. It's not a terrible effect and kicking Arlong down through multipel floors is always fun to see. The destruction of Arlong Park is the usual icing on the cake.
We have only just passed the 20 minute mark. Over half of this episode remains.
Luffy emerges from the rubble to remind Nami that she's part of their crew which gets relieved chuckle out of the others.
Back to a now celebrating village. Strange, I thought the intact background buildings were burned down earlier. Maybe if you had stuck to the manga you would not have plot holes?
Sanji offering private lessons to Nojiko after she asks for his recipies is suitably in character. I do hope she gets some more dialogue, with her sister for example, before the end of the episode.
More Sanji/Zoro insults, unfortunately this bit was written by someone who wants them to fuck. Usopp at least is pretty good and has a receptive audience for the tale of his single handed victory. Luffy leads the cheers for Captain Usopp though which is odd but fine.
Cue the Marines. Time for Garp to look ineffectual when he gives the order for their arrest and no-one moves. Koby points out that the fishmen destroyed this village not the Straw Hats. I have no ideas how he knows this. Got to be bad writing again, since simply adding "I know" to his claim about the Straw Hats not being involved would be better as it would make it a guess based off his feelings. Garp reiterates the orders which Koby refuses to follow and even Helmeppo agrees with him. Garp has to give his orders again and some Marines finally move to cover the rest of the crew while Garp takes Luffy to one side for a chat.
Yep. We're really going to have a Luffy/Garp "fight." It's at least reasonable and Garp makes the fair point that this is what Marines do to pirates but doing this in the remains of Coco village and destroying it even further makes both of them look like assholes. Luffy attempts a Gum Gum Rocket and Garp clotheslines him. Again Garp makes the point that this is what is going to happen, Marines will do this to him and Luffy tries to act like he's a terrible parent figure trying to beat his dream out of him. This is bad writing and awful characterisation of them both, I'm so glad Netflix fought to have Garp included against Oda's recommendation.
Luffy's continued fixation on his dream while laughing in the face of defeat reminds Garp of Roger. Shame that's going to happen again in Logue town, thanks for reducing the impact of that show. Garp's actor gets to laugh again though and he gives good chortle. He decides good enough and tells the Marines to leave the crew and go hunt the fishmen instead. Nezumi is here so we can get yet another scene of ineffectuality when he protests ignoring the criminals right in front of them and Nami knocks him out. Nothing like slapping round Marines in front of an entire crew of them who have no idea the guy is corrupt and getting away with it to hammer in the point that Garp and his Marines have been the Straw Hat's training wheels for this entire run and they'd likely all be dead without them.
Garp gives Luffy a farewell where he explains this was entirely a test just in case you thought that point would not be really hammered in for the audience and while Luffy noting that even if Garp is no longer there he still has his crew does not change the fact that the actor's face when Garp clarifies that looks like he realises just how much bullshit this alteration is as the average fan.
Next day Nami is telling her dead mother that she's finally free and hoping she'd be proud of her. Luckily they've got Nojiko there to assure her of that and DO NOT DO IT! FUCK. They call attention to Nami's arm which should be justifiable stabbed up but no, a little sore with injuries barely worse than paper cuts on it. Slap a bandage on and hide that failure. Oh I mean she has a replacement tattoo, wow. Could have done this scene with her getting the tattoo but no. Nojiko is trying here but the actress is being given a chance to do familial bonding way too late in this story to matter. I hope she never reads the manga and reads how much was cut.
Luffy is chowing down at the front of Nami's town when Koby turns up to show him his bounty poster. He is course ecstatic and hugs Koby in celebration before the two agree to part. By the way they are the same height. Random observation but it's notable here.
Returning to the Going Merry to brag about the poster Usopp points out he is in it too. Zoro notes that this will attract bounty hunters but Luffy's counterpoint is they're heading for the Grand Line anyway. We pan to the various characters met so far as they see the new bounty in their copy of the papers. Zeff is the best one, slapping it up on an Employee of the month section while in a bar Luffy eyes it while plotting his revenge and meeting his new murderous buddy, Alvida.
While enjoying the posted bounty Garp is interrupted by his new cadets ready to take their punishment for defying orders. Of course Garp points out that everyone's got their own version of justice and they stuck to theirs so he's fine with them. Of course he's still going to train them but fortunately they both have ambitions. Koby wants to become an astounding Marine, able to fight someone like Luffy and Helmeppo wants to be a swordsman as capable as Zoro. I hate this so much it's unbelievable, Helmeppo's motivations was substantially better and more interesting. Mihawk stops by to visit the Red Hair pirates and Shanks asks him to come back at less hungover o'clock. Credit to the cast once the Luffy bounty poster comes out they all come out of their shells very well and Mihawk joins them for the celebration. Of course this is another manga scene so no surprise it's good.
Nami has a collection of about three tangerine trees because everything is smaller in this show. They do however reveal the sail complete with Straw Hat flag and Luffy's actor does a good routine celebrating. Nami is plotting their course and foreshadows the uphill voyage to which, entirely in character, Luffy says she'll figure it out. Oh dear, Sanji has an idea and has rolled out a barrel. Know what scene this will be.
I honestly think this is a fine example of what the show could be. Everyone is in decent versions of fairly iconic attire for this point of the show, dialogue is not spot on but the actors are all on point and as they make their vows of what they're going to do we get a cut to their child selves as they say it. Usopp being hesitant here and his line delivery makes me unbelievably pissed how much they short changed him in his own episodes. Bit of anime music to cut us to a more military theme and a smokey room where a Marine suited individual uses cigars to...fucking hell this was crappy when 50 shades of Grey did it. Burn out the eyes of Luffy's wanted posters.
Sorry Smoker, you didn't even get a line of dialogue before you were ruined. And that means you get to bump Buggy off his third place. Second is Usopp, third is Nami. May the Netflix writers be cast into a dark place where their cries for mercy go unheard.
