I really liked the second half of the episode, but it felt way to indulgent at points, particularly the 2nd introduction of Gear 5. I also didn't need to see Luffy do the Joyboy pose in the moon and then charge his haki like five times. I get they have a time slot to feel and this fight is more than one episode and they wanted to end it at specific point though. I kind of wish I had just waited to next weekend to watch this episode and next week's back to back.

That being said watching Luffy Tom & Jerry slam Kaido was pretty fantastic.

The episode was a big let down for me considering how much they hyped it up. A lot of the actions scenes were too messy for my liking.
I enjoyed the messiness. There were so many blink-and-you-miss-it moments in the fight, it really kept me glued to my seat.

The Hanna Barbara sound effects, though... they didn't really fit in with the super dramatic score.

The animation was a little too fast at some portions, especially the boro breath reflection. Looney Toons Luffy can work though if the stylization was toned down a bit.

I think some of the sound effects was fine but they overdid it on Luffy swinging Kaido around.

Edit: Oh yeah. I really love the job Luffy's voice actress did. She made Luffy sound more erratic. Very fitting for the "most ridiculous power."

I haven't sat down to watch it for myself yet, but I just want to say that if they actually animated Luffy in 24 frames per second in Gear 5 I will die happy.

I like the fight and the cartoon sound effects but I hated the padding and reusing the same animation three fucking times. Overall it was meh.

Standard complaint, can we not just get an episode of One Piece without a flashback?

That said I liked it. I get why people did not enjoy aspects of it but this always was not going to fit standard anime or even standard animation for anything in the last 20 years. The Kaido whipping in particular I know the average idiot will think "it's meant to be Hulk from Avengers lol" but as already called out up thread it's old school western animation. And honestly pretty spot on. The way he slapped him into the floor is something I would have expected to see in those cartoons. Running mid-air, bouncing Kaido so hard his eyes can't keep up with his body, I also think at one point Luffy grabs hands with his own shadow?

I also didn't need to see Luffy do the Joyboy pose in the moon
Pretty sure that is ripped straight from the manga.

As another aside I suspect Youtube is receiving takedown requests at a rate of knots. Went to glance at it to remind me of stuff after watching and the amount of full episodes on there for this one is fun.

It is, honestly outside of Ripping up the floor to reflect the burst breath and the padding it was a pretty straight adaptation.

The Scenes with Hiyori and Orochi were basically right where they were in the Manga too.

Give people time to see the next episode, this is one of those twists that takes a bit of chewing on to really get how good it is, and honestly..The Gum Gum Fruit having two names makes sense even now because for the most part* it is just a Paramecia until you awaken it.

*The parts that matter..is where it would be funny for the power not to work, or Nika nudging Luffy to be stupid for the lulz..like the time against Jango where Luffy was easily Hypnotized.

What are you talking about, One Piece is a serious manga and no-one would ever do anything stupid in a life or death situation.

About the sound-effects, what if some of it feels out-of-place/too chaotic is because Luffy is new to his awakened powers, and hasn't yet found the right balance/usage of cartoony sound-effects? Sound is only ever represented by onomatopoeia in comics, so whenever it gets adapted to moving film (cartoon or live-action), the foley artist(s) and director and editor have to make those decisions to enhance the experience. Sound makes and breaks film, after all.

I might be giving Toei too much credit and am overthinking it, but I'm willing to give them the benefit of the doubt it may have been purposeful, and that over time, the sound-effects will sound more fitting as Luffy better perfects his awakening.

I get it's from the manga, my complaint is that they repeated that bit repeatedly.

Manga did it twice too.

Edit : Something I noticed rereading this week's chapter in the official release.

Where the fuck are Kaku and Robin and Stussy in the big ass Group Shot?

You can't blame Nika for that one, Law and Kid got in on that action too.
Luffy levels of dumb are highly contagious.

I noticed Kaku's absence since I was looking for him as well as Luci. It's possible there's a bit of information exchange going on between those two and Robin, AKA the one crew member actually paying attention to the metaplot.

This lasted for less then one second. Very shameful that the animators felt embarrassed about this. Tex Avery was the only one who could have done this justice
