Where to begin? This goes against many acceptable lore precedents in One Piece.

First, I could have accepted this had it been a Special Paramecia like the Mochi Mochi no Mi or a unique Logia like the Yami Yami no Mi. The Gomu Gomu no Mi would have been more believable as one of those Devil Fruit types rather than as a Mythical Zoan.

Second, I would have been fine with the Mythical Zoan angle had it been introduced earlier. For example, Sengoku is the only other human with a Mythical Hito Hito no Mi. He used his Buddha form without being awakened. Had we seen Luffy use any type of god form prior to this awakening, then it would be less bad. It would still feel corny and shoehorned, but at least it would have been properly established before this chapter.

Unfortunately, this plot twist leaves a bad taste in my mouth. One Piece has had plot holes and contradictions before, but this is the worst of the worst. Yes, One Piece is just a shonen manga and at the end of the day it will be subjected to shonen logic too. However, I STILL don’t like this. It really feels like Oda not only made an asspull, but he shits all over his own lore in many different ways too.

I’ll continue to follow One Piece. If this fucks up the story too much though, then I would have to sadly abandon it.

Speaking of which, the One Piece twitter has supposedly locked their comment section, scanlation groups (TCB, the one we link to), the spoiler provider (someone named Redon?), are all encouraging people to avoid spoilers. I was even reading on r/OnePiece that someone got spoiled on the latest chapter in a completely unrelated subreddit (for some exam thing he was taking). This sounds even more out of control than the last chapter.

Trust me, the Fake Spoilers were crazy this week, but my info is from Redon, and is the only tidbit I’ll post.

Spoiler images are pretty good though.

And yeah, my factoid is causing quite a stir on Reddit.

We are going to cut back to the Gorosei. One of them says “It’s like the Fruit has a mind of its own” and one other responds to that with “Because Zoan Fruits do tend to have their own minds”

For real though everyone, it’s better off you not read the spoilers. The only reason I do it is because the Manga Images mean nothing to me in the long run. I prefer to not be spoiled by action.

Exposition and Text, that’s why I read the Manga.

Whoa whoa whoa wait a minute, you'll actually put in the effort to read the manga but not English subtitles for the anime? That's vile.

I'll be completely down for it if afterward Luffy still calls it the Gum-Gum Fruit, despite people telling him its true nature because something like "Hito Man sounds dumb, So Gum Gum it is!".
 
So I just found out that Nika have been mentioned before, a Sun God or something that frees Slaves or something like that. Damn it, Oda, did you run out of ideas?
