Advice on how to set up and run a Space Station 13 server?
Do I make a fork of /tg/station like Jersh? How much coding is required? I've heard DM can be very tricky. Will it be dead on arrival with a pop of 3 people?

Setting up a server is basically plug and play, although I never actually hosted for anyone other than myself to fuck around in so you probably have to do some port forwarding. Merchant station was briefly active and died after a few months.

The real problem is finding people to admin the server.

This would be especially difficult in a game like SS13 where a large part of the playerbase is usually only interested in chaos. I think grabbing the most decent players from the userbase would be the best solution.
 
If Kiwi Station is of any indication, a majority of the people clamoring for a revival of Kiwi Station are exactly those players only interested in chaos.

There are people out there (mostly outside onlookers of SS13) who genuinely think SS14 is a successor platform for SS13. Meanwhile it has a troon logo when booting it up and nothing but Russian servers.
Whenever someone says the SS13 community isn't infested with troons and its an exaggeration; just assume they too may be a troon.

SS14 has been adding a lot of upgrades to science, mining, anomalies, and various antagonists or unrelated features featured in the popular severs. They're still moving pretty slow but at least they're making progress.
I must add that literally all SS13 servers currently suck. TG and /vg/ are full of politispergs with no life and goon, paradise, or marrine corps all suck now. SS14 is our only hope.

I guess that would explain why Tex has been cooking up his own private BPL station.

/vg/ is a /pol/ sperg server where everyone talks about drama all the time. Even TG is better by comparison. Sure the jannies might ban you if you say a mean word, but at least people are more concerned with playing the game. The only thing /vg/ players care about is trying their best to get whoever they don't like banned. They even made a "I do whatever I want to whoever isn't popular enough" rule. :story:

It doesn't work on BYOND's bad code and it's open source. You can make your own fork and run Chud Station 14 if you wanted to.
OpenDream could also work but it's not supported by the big servers just yet.

The biggest problem with Kiwi Station was that the decent players were outnumbered by all the autistic retards who got permabanned from every other server.

If you're serious about reviving it you should only admin the pettiest most egotistical power-tripping babies and let them swing their girldicks around for a month or two to clear out the worst of it before trying to replace them with anybody decent.

That's how it should be. Though in most servers the egotistical power-tripping babies take over and command an army of retards. Whether the retards are politispergs that love drama or idiot redditors that worship troons it doesn't matter. What really kills SS13 is the fact that the game is stuck on BYOND, which is ironically far beyond the reach of normal people. Who could guess that the people willing to work tirelessly on a 20 year old game engine that was never popular or even functional are not of the highest stock?

Kiwistation's only hope is OpenDream or SS14. No one can possibly host a server on BYOND and make it not awful. The platform is decimated by asocial retards that have been playing the game non-stop for years.

You should put in a new gamemode that rolls sometimes called 'culture war' where ten minutes into the shift everyone has to choose between team chud or team trans and then have an all-out war for control of the station, that way chuds and trannies have to get along in normal rounds but everyone's incentivised to bring all their autistic retard friends to the server just in case next round procs a culture war and their autistic set of beliefs are outnumbered by the other side's autistic set of beliefs.

Neither of them can sit together in a server long enough for this to happen.
