Here's my 2 cents regarding homes.
 
someone is going to find that portal in the very small nether world and smash your ass
 
just build your shit underground. my shit is on the border of the spawn's no-touch-block-zone and nobody has found it yet

Pro tip: If you spam teleport through Hell's roof you can get above bedrock. You should keep all your shit there anyway. Even if someone else makes it up there are no landmarks so the probability of finding it is very low. You'll probably die a couple times before you make it through but once it happens, you don't have to walk far before you can create a brand new portal, make your place wherever that ends up linking you to.

Just made this in my singleplayer world. Complete with the Holocaust rollercoaster!

I had one of those traveler fucks that spawned in in the cart, but it despawned before I was finished.
