I get them frequently and their awful
fellow kiwis who also suffer from frequent ones, what are your techniques to reduce them or make the pain go away faster besides meds, water, and rest

Go to a chiropractor or massage therapist for a correction to your neck. Your neck is likely fucked because of a desk job or sitting behind a desk for too long in general. This is a very common cause for headaches because of the tension it causes on the base of the skull.

Unless your willing to change your lifestyle and depending on severity, you will probably need to meet with them weekly to bi-weekly. Its not that expensive and the treatments are pretty quick. Also having your legs/back/shoulders corrected at the same time (it all packaged together in the cost anyways) can relieve a lot of tension you were not even aware of to begin with.

Stacking ibuprofen and paracetamol is my go-to, as they don't interact and tend to crush out whatever combination of inflammation & pain signalling is presenting. About the only thing it doesn't seem to work well for is a caffeine headache or the rare severe migrane.
The single most effective thing I found though to reduce the number of headaches I get is figuring out what I'm allergic to. Which turned out to be lots of things - Most perfumes, eggs, dairy, shellfish, crustaceans, some e-numbers. I wiped out at least a couple of headaches per week just eliminating eggs from my diet.

More water is a meme and is in fact counter productive if your headache/migraine is induced by lack of electrolytes.
As for getting rid of them:
  • Don't use computer/TV/mobile screens
  • Rest in a dark room, light is bad.
  • Use heat/ice packs
  • And I find taking codeine tablets for the really serious headaches helps a lot, but don't abuse it.

If I drink liquid too much during an attack my stomach bloats :c

Last time I had one, I took two pills of ibuprofen(800mg altogether), and that managed to alleviated the pain quite a bit.

Keep a packet of Buccastem M (prochlorperazine maleate) handy if you tend to throw up a lot during a migraine.

You let it sit and dissolve on the gums and they stop the nausea and vomiting giving a chance for painkillers to actually work!

My steps are excedrin migraine as soon as the hint of a migraine comes on, eye mask, sometimes squeezing my skull makes it feel better temporarily when it's really bad, and trying to sleep. I also try to avoid any strong smells, lights, or loud sounds. I've never had an ice pack help but a cold washcloth can feel nice.

If you're going to puke (I always do) drink a bit of milk first to neutralize the acid and help your stomach feel better. After you puke try to eat some crackers and sip an electrolyte drink.

I feel bad for some of you who get migraines that debilitate you. I get traditional migraines with the aura and everything, but if I take a Rizatriptan right away I can usually skip the headache after the aura goes away. I feel a bit foggy but nothing worse than if I smoked a good joint.

If you haven’t seen an actual doctor specifically about migraines you should, there’s a lot of really good medication out there and you might find something that works for you.

And for those that can’t, my deepest sympathies, I know they can get bad without the right medicine.
