Hey, fellow Kiwis. It's Sanae, emerging from her years-long cryosleep due to certain... events in Christory. I figure before I return back to hibernation I should drop this small little ditty that's been hounding me for the past year.
So I've mostly left the Farms because irl is busy and my interest in monitoring lolcows has somewhat waned over the years, but nonetheless I somehow manage to keep running into eccentrics despite my efforts to remain on the normal side of the Internet. I was kinda torn on whether to put this in Personal Lolcows or Obscure Laughingstocks, but considering how... infamous this man is in this specific subsect, I figure it might belong here instead.
For some brief background history,
Age of Empires II: Definitive Edition released approximately two years ago and I picked up, having grown up with the original AoE 2 way back in the day. Custom Scenarios were always one of my guilty pleasures growing up and I indulged a bit in some of them being hosted in the Lobby Browser. I ended up joining a Diplomacy game based on Game of Thrones, which in turn inevitably led me to being invited to a public AoE 2 Custom Scenario Discord, with one of its head admins being a man who goes by the name "Icey."
Now, I personally like and respect the community and creators and for their sake, I'm going to be redacting any quotes I pull from anyone other than Icey. Icey's a huge egotist and I imagine that shining any attention on him would likely be viewed as a
favor.
Icey is a AoE 2 custom scenario creator who apparently has been active at least since the release of
Age of Empires II HD Edition, now renamed
Age of Empires II (2013). There's many,
many words I could use to describe Icey, but fortunately a smaller content creator, Dave, documented one of Icey's in-game tirades
here. As you can tell, he is a very calm and composed man and is an absolute
joy to be stuck with.
Now there's two important things to note when talking about Icey:
- He's God's gift to Age of Empires and the greatest damn custom scenario creator (according to him)
- Everyone beneath him is shit and incompetent.
So yeah, typical massive egotist. I'm pretty sure we've all dealt with someone like this before. Icey's brazen ego and inability to literally work with or tolerate others, though, has basically gotten him blacklisted from most other major AoE 2 Custom Scenario communities. This is mostly exemplified by his need to turn literally everything into a cult of personality and pretty much trying to spy on and/or sabotage competing communities with his litany of alts. The reactions have gone from vitriol (I imagine at first) to mockery (current).
On top of him basically assaulting servers with assloads upon assloads of alts, he's not much liked because he's just... not really a pleasant person to be around.
He also has an issue with abusing his admin powers to, well, basically ban whoever he feels like whenever he throws a fit.
Which is where I come in. So, Icey's the co-owner (sorta) of the server, alongside the actual Owner. I ended up joining and, uh, apparently by being a likable person and playing a lot at first, I ended up somehow finagling my way into an admin position. I... don't really quite know how I ended up with that kind of power, but there you go. I spent most of my time generally cleaning up after Icey's tirades and unbanning the people who he bans for reasons that I don't necessarily know nor comprehend. As irl hit and I stopped playing as much, along with me basically going against literally everything he does, Icey really, really began to fucking hate me. We do not share a friendly relationship. At all.
I've actually tried to quit, like, several times. And Icey, being Icey, has also "fired" me several more times. However, the Owner really, really doesn't want to deal with Icey's shit alone and I'm one of the few people who (barely) tolerates the guy, so I've been more or less kept as an involuntary admin, mostly just cleaning up the shit that Icey stirs.
Now, "fortunately," it appears that the Owner is more or less about to give up dealing with Icey and has been considering giving the ownership of the Discord over to him. Icey used to be the server but, after a brief schism in which literally everyone left, Icey gave up ownership of the Discord to the current Owner. Icey has never, EVER let the Owner not know about how much the server is "his" and how fucking much he apparently gives a shit.
Icey is really, REALLY,
REALLY is hypersensitive about his server. He constantly shits on other people for not "building the community he has" and that his large ass server with so many people (that he browbeats into joining with constant Discord invites) (or may also just be a bunch of alts) is so much better than literally everyone else's. It's honestly surreal how much he fixates on it.
At any rate, the Owner may be giving ownership of the Discord over to Icey and, knowing him and how much he probably hates my guts, I'll be actually fired within a few weeks. And honestly, good riddance. I can't make myself scarce any faster.
