New York Attorney General Letitia James on Thursday escalated her criticism of the New York Police Department in a lawsuit against the NYPD over its handling of Black Lives Matter protests this past spring.

The lawsuit also names Mayor Bill de Blasio, Police Commissioner Dermot Shea and Chief of Department Terry Monahan.

The lawsuit accuses the department and the individuals of failing to address what it calls a long-standing pattern of abuse evident in the tactics used to quash the demonstrations that raged over the death of George Floyd at the hands of police.

"There is no question that the NYPD engaged in a pattern of excessive, brutal, and unlawful force against peaceful protesters," James said. "Over the past few months, the NYPD has repeatedly and blatantly violated the rights of New Yorkers, inflicting significant physical and psychological harm and leading to great distrust in law enforcement."

James' suit cites dozens of examples of allegedly blatant misuse of power, including unlawful arrests of medics and lawyers, excessive force and kettling, a maneuver in which officers corralled protesters, closed in and made arrests.

The protests have already led to new state laws banning aggressive tactics and making police records more transparent. City Council shifted nearly $1 billion from the department's budget.

In July, James issued a report saying the protests had shaken public confidence in the NYPD, and she recommended an independent panel – not the mayor – appoint the police commissioner and handle officer discipline.

James now seeks, through her lawsuit, injunctive relief to include court-ordered reforms enforced by an independent monitor.

The lawsuit comes amid growing calls in some political corners to rein in police powers and hold officers accountable for abuse. In her news conference Thursday, James is also expected to echo the contrast that has been made about the treatment of BLM protesters versus the Capitol rioters, as voiced during Wednesday's impeachment debate by Rep. Jerry Nadler.

"We have a duty to observe, Madam Speaker, that racism played a direct role in this incitement," he said. "The president's violent rhetoric is always at its most fevered pitch when he is talking about the civil rights and civic aspirations of Black Americans and other minority communities."

Don't forget. New York City argued in court AND WON that they had no duty to actually protect people.

TL;DR - Joseph Lizito subdued Maksim Gelman in the subway in 2011 while the cops just stood there and watched Lizito get stabbed. Not only was Gelman threatening people in the subway, but he was actively the target of a citywide manhunt because he had killed four people prior.

On July 25, 2013, Judge Margaret Chan dismissed Lozito's suit, stating that while Lozito's account of the attack rang true and appeared "highly credible", Chan agreed that police had "no special duty" to protect Lozito.

The more shit like this happens and the longer things go without any kind of consequences for the feral animals being allowed to destroy property, the likelihood of vigilante justice and political assassinations increases.

They seem to want an anarchotyranny, and that's going to bite them in the ass.

That goes back to Warren v. DC

Rioting and looting small owned businesses that happened to be owned by black people is not a civic “aspiration”. It’s anarchy disguised as “social justice”.

And neither is ongoing records of black on black violence.

And yet, more police officers suffer from the likes of anxiety, depression and stress, which then causes an uptick of suicide. But I guess you don’t want to talk about that, huh?

Disingenuous and arrogance are a harmful mix towards anyone that talks like this.

The biggest contrast being that BLM rioters were free to burn, steal, and murder with the approval of big business, the corporate media, and the political class, while a bunch of boomers taking selfies in a 'mostly peaceful' (since that appears to cleanse the associated group of responsibility) manner in the palaces of the 'elites' then suddenly, order must be restored and heads must roll.
You are overthinking it. It is bad because it is the other party doing it. Rules for thee.

This BLM jazz was being funded and organized by the DNC as their election year viral social media cause celebre. Half of the political apparatus that runs the country actively engaged in instigating riots so they could get an edge on an election.

Aren't politically motivated double standards grand.

Another part of the petty fight between Cuomo and de Blasio. Don't take this as a dig at the NYPD, it is, but underlying that is the consistent fighting those two have with each other. I have no doubts in my mind Cuomo is having this happen to stick it to de Blasio and while I would like to see either of them hoist by their petards for being assholes of the ninth degree, digging at the NYPD to do it is something I don't agree with.
The NYPD does need an attitude adjustment when it comes to dealing with people day by day; I get more asshole cop stories from friends and family dealing with them than any other city in this state. Thing is, suing them and saying you should let riots happen ain't the way to change it. All it will do, if the SA wins, is hasten NYC's decline.

They want a "fascist" response that will seem to justify their lunacy.

They seem to forget that starting a fire to play hero often ends very, very badly for the would be hero. Things are rarely as controllable as one might wish...

Dickbag cuomo is suddenly on the 'open businesses' train.

This, essentially. De Blasio and Cuomo are at each other's throats right now since de Blasio obviously wants to be governor at some point and toppling Cuomo is the best way to pull that off. And Cuomo is pissed because de Blasio is trying to get Cuomo blamed for the things he himself did with varying degrees of success. The NYPD is just collateral damage in Tammany Hall's infighting.

Also, about the NYPD being a bunch of assholes... you too would be an asshole after dealing with NYC's worst day after day. When you live in a place where "Go fuck yourself!" is a friendly greeting, I'm not sure what you'd expect when people actually get angry.

They wouldn't be Antifa if they knew anything about the real world or if their disappointing lives had any value. Like BLM, being angry and violent against "oppression" is the goal, not a means to an end. They have no goal beyond that.

And they're all huge narcissists. They think, at worst, everyone else will die and they'll be the ones left behind to scream the names of the martyred.

The NYPD should all quit and let the city to its own devices. See how well a large metropolis lasts without state-enforced law, for better or for worse.

A crime happened? Call the goddamn Daredevil.
lol, most cops only care about their pension; not a protest walkout.

This looks like some shitty publicity stunt in addition to being obvious propaganda. Looks like they are only seeking some meaningless injunction. New York didn't want to be left out of the shitting on the right that's underway after the Capital incident.

I actually agree with both of your points.

Yes, politics are "rules for thee but not me." But also, due to a combination fo Coronachan and BLM, 1/3 up to 1/2 of small businesses are closed. Possibly permanently as it is literally illegal for them to reopen right now.

This has been one of the biggest transitions from small businesses to big businesses and it has been completely been supported by fear and big business.

That's why it's a "conspiracy theory" to say that Corona was CREATED for this. It was not created, but it is absolutely being USED for his.

I wouldn't even say that. It was the politically connected businesses that got special rules. Those that didn't kiss the ring foundered. How did certain businesses get connected, you ask? They rather openly made donations to various social justice groups.

It was an economy-wide shakedown into DNC-aligned political groups. That's how they paid the election bills in 2020. Everybody was scratching their heads how they would pay for it after Hillary drained the coffers and the big donors stepped away. Well, here it was.

I'd like the FBI to look into all of it but that's a pipe-dream for the foreseeable future. Something big and stupid that they couldn't hide would have to shake loose.

The only reason why the NYPD even exists at this point is because the state needs a way to monitor how many Jews are in any single location.

Yup. After last year I am genuinely surprised some places have any police left at all. A sane person would have punched out back in May.
Money. No, seriously, the police in Portland at least are racking up insane amounts of overtime hours for dealing with feral human-shaped animals night after night. IIRC a few cops have made over $250K doing this. I'd assume that with police unions it's like this in a lot of places including NYC.

Add on to that the fact that in some departments, your pension is based wholly or in part on the highest paid years of your career. There are cops who stand to make a HUGE amount of money doing a job no one else wants to do. It's like the people who do those nasty-ass trades and come home covered in shit. Yeah, if that guy's any decent at his job he's making more in a year than you will in five years and he doesn't have a penny of college debt.
