I completely agree with this. I think that an even better comparison is when ~5-10 years ago people started using these ridiculous terms to describe their sexuality, like "pansexual, polysexual, demisexual" and all that other crap. Then everyone was just like, "who gives a fuck just fuck whoever you want and shut up," and now, notice, you barley hear these words at all. The gender crap will go through the same thing. Society will just be like, "whatever, be a male who likes to wear dresses no one actually gives a shit," and then we'll be on to the next stupid thing.
And if you follow this line of thinking, the best thing to do when someone tries to shove the fact that they're "non-binary" down your throat is to just roll your eyes and say, "obviously no one's gender identity perfectly matches with what is 'expected' of them by society based on their sex. That's just common sense." And then walk away. That will sting them more than any purposeful misgendering, I tell ya.

I just got a vision of these people trying to argue that your biological age means nothing (don't some crazies actually already do this?) and that you are however old that you feel and identify. ETA: And I should add that I fully believe gender dysphoria does exist. I don't know what the proper solution is to it. That said, I don't think what 99% of these people are experiencing is gender dysphoria, but rather a case of "I'm special, misunderstood, and enjoy telling people what to do."
It doesn't surprise me at all that Demi IDs as non-binary. Every single non-binary person I've ever encountered is either A) mentally ill or B) a huge attention whore. Demi is both of the above.
