Ever played a 3D game on your smart phone? Even if the three hour thing is just a devkit version with a shorter span, the tech for batteries hasn't caught up with the rest of the tech. You won't get anywhere near 6. There is literally no hardware out there that could run games that look like that on a reasonable sized device that isn't insanely expensive. Even the 3DS had a battery life of around 3-5 hrs.

Not much they could've done regardless. Perhaps we'll see a battery expansion pack. Probably getting a power cord for the standalone device, too, so you can charge it in a public outlet if need be. Sorry, dude.
Yes, I wouldn't be complaining about battery life here given the circumstances.

If it truely does what was shown in the commercial, 3 hours is generous for battery life. I dont think this was meant to be a true portable, just one that is easy to carry around or play standalone in small burts (couple hours in bed, keep kids occupied on an hour trip, ect.)

I've come to realize how much portability is being affected in the digital age. It used to be very easy to take a pocket TV around with you and still pick up the stations easy 30 years ago, today, it's just gotten more limited.

^ A couple of companies sell ATSC (digital) pocket televisions. They're even more of a niche market than they were in the 1980s because the majority of consumers who want to watch television on the go seem to prefer watching Netflix on their smartphones and also because it's a lot harder to watch an ATSC signal when moving compared to NTSC signals (I used to be able to watch NTSC broadcasts on a commuter train), but I may still pick up an ATSC pocket TV eventually to watch free over-the-air broadcasts in my bedroom.

I suppose if you don't move around a lot. I just sorta feel ATSC and the way digital signals appear to work leaves out room for durability as far as movement is concerned, of course this is coming from someone who loved watching out-of-town stations from a moving RV with a portable TV in the back! There was just something about getting to see a quick taste of what TV was like outside your area that appealed to me. It's just sorta lost nowadays thanks to new technologies (Netflix of course, which I fail to see as a normal fixture in my life yet, it's just Pay TV in a new form).

It feels weird developping on thsoe tegra chips from nvidia for months on industrial applications and then seeing it pop out in a gaming console. Those things have insane performance per watts. Like, amazing. It's both a crappy as fuck low-power cpu and an insanely good gpu.

Sorry, if I can't actually put it in my pocket like a DS/3DS, I'm not interested in it as a "handheld". I'm not lugging around an extra bag to play games on the bus.
It looks like it's about the same size as a PS Vita, which is about the average size of most smartphones. It'll fit on your pocket just fine, I'd say.

The Vita alone is a pocket-hog, this is probably an inch or two bigger in both directions, from the look of it. It goes back to my point earlier about whether its portable enough for Japan to still buy it. Those guys love their portables.

I really doubt this is gonna cannibalize the 3DS, the dual+touchscreen gimmick is surprisingly easy for developers to work off of and it's got that fancy-cool 3D tech that the kids love.

Except that real kids shouldn't use the fancy-cool 3D tech because it could impair their vision.

Also 3D tech loses a lot of its appeal when you can't see 3D in the first place. And the amount of people who can't is suprisingly large.
That said I have the thesis that impaired 3D vision can reduce virtual sickness. But that's based on a miniscule reference pool.

If the switch will be the console to feature the next pokemon generation after sun and moon, I'll definitely get one, otherwise there is not that much appeal for me yet.

I don't actually have a 3DS for financial reasons but I'm probably going to get one within the next few months.

When I've tried other peoples' 3DS'es, however, I've turned the 3D off. The selling point for me was always that it was a second generation DS with improved graphics, the 3D is just a side thing for people who need a gimmick each time. I too am one of those people with severely unbalanced vision who can barely see the real world in 3D. Weirdly, 3D movies kind of work for me, but the effect feels so unnatural that I get a blistering headache and have to keep one eye shut (so I always go to 2D screenings).

I don't have this problem with the fake 3D they use for these devices or movies, but I could understand why some would be put off by it.

I generally turn the 3D off in most games but it is amazing for platformers. It was also really good for Smash Brothers because it helped me pay attention to the characters better since it sticks them right in the foreground.

So it's the WiiU...except more portable?
I don't know really, I don't care much for Nintendo consoles. If it works and the games run at a decent frame rate while not looking like garbage then I suppose it'll be good enough to buy. Whether it has the games to back up that purchase is another thing. I see Skyrim is on it, that looks cool I guess. Finally getting that third-party support is real good. Controllers looks like absolute garbage though. I have one issue with that teaser though.

Who the fuck stops playing basketball in reality to play basketball on a tiny as fuck screen with only one other friend?

it should be a lot more powerful than a wii u. Compatibily is clearly not possible, cpu changed to ARM and gpu to nvidia.

Oh yeah, I forgot to include this in my prior bitching...

I am sick to death of Nintendo not including four shoulder buttons on their consoles. They only did 3 on Gamecube, they did four on Wii Pro controllers but only as a last minute addition and not in an easy to reach way, they used them on Wii U but now they are gone again. I don't care how much your teams personally want them, Nintendo, they are needed for ports. If you don't want them to be triggers for size reasons fine, compromises have to be made to enable portability but at least make sure they are there.

It has four shoulder buttons.
