I'm curious to know what the exact appeal of a portable home console would be for you guys.

I guess it's good if I want to play a console game in bed or something?

I mean, I can see situations where, if you take a bag with you when you go out already for a laptop or tablet, carrying around a "portable" of that size wouldn't be a big deal but if you're someone like me who prefers only traveling with pocketable devices, this is a big step down from the 3DS.

Yep, all they did was reinvent the Wii U.
Nothing wrong with that. the Wii U had some good ideas. My dad uses the tablet thing to play games all the time, but pretty much none of the games where you need both the tablet controller and the TV ever get played.

Getting rid of the latter is a good idea.

This console can really solve the quality gap issue in handheld (read: smartphone) gaming, if Nintendo is truly aggressive.

Think about it from all angles, aside from shovelware, a clear lack of gaming-enthusiast smartphones and very few gaming tablets with suitable controls means less attention to quality in handheld gaming. Touch screen have worked better now than then, but the touchscreen is a very tenuous substitute to buttons and switches. There's more shitty games in the android/iOS category than the shittiest games in the past five generations combined. Think about that, too.

I can see where Nintendo is coming from here. Maybe Samsung or Apple could come up with a premium solution to this problem.

I am hoping that with the surprisingly large leaps in tech recently that have made the PC leave the PS4 and XB1 in the dust, that the Nintendo Switch will actually have comparable hardware to the PS4 despite the compact size.

Honestly the most excitement I get out of this (setting aside the fact that most of the details were already hammered down by leakers a few months ago so its hard to be shocked by it all) is that Nintendo won't be hamstrung by having to support two platforms at the same time anymore. RIP in piece DS line, you aren't going to be missed by me.

That said, I don't think that this will be a market success. It looks to me to be too big for the sort of subway gaming that Japan likes (and they are switching over to mobile anyway) while a few of the decisions (lack of triggers, likely high price and possible performance issues) might make it less than fully desirable as well. I wish Nintendo well but don't believe the hype at this time.

It's funny: Everyone made fun of Nintendo for sticking with cartridges, now they're a trailblazer for going back to cartridges.

(I think it's a pretty good move: less moving parts and less waiting for games to install)

The "cartridges" are just SD chips, they never went away from them on mobile and Sony switched back with the Vita. In the sense that you are taking games with you on occasion it makes sense to go back. The cost of that tech has really been coming down lately so it is a smart move, but I don't think its particularly trailblazing.

This is really missing the point. It's always been about Nintendo being a generation behind in terms of tech. Going to cartridges here is born more out of necessity than innovation - blu-ray disks are by far the cheaper option, but reading those is delicate and prone to errors if the system is in motion. The PSP really had to do a lot to make their little CD-ettes stable within the system, and they were quick to abandon that once High Capacity Solid State got cheaper.

inb4 they still cut things like headpatting and skimpy outfits when bringing games to the West
Rumor has it, it's region free so you can import your titty games.
I'm curious to know what the exact appeal of a portable home console would be for you guys. It doesn't spark my interest because I'm never wandering around my house wishing I had my game with me instead of having to pause and get up. Is it because it saves having spend extra on a handheld for when you're out? Because I can get the appeal of just a powerful handheld you can plug into your TV, though I never bought handhelds or consoles for anything but exclusives.
Toilet gaming taken to the next level, being able to move around the house (go into the bedroom, living room, ect.), people who travel a lot especially long flights...The dock is also small enough to take with you an easily connect to a hotel TV, especially for super nerds who go to a bunch of cons.
I can see the appeal honestly.

To be fair, back then disks could store way more than cartridges (I think FVII would've taken like dozens of N64 Cartridges if I remember correctly). Now cartridges store as much as you could ever want, are much faster, and don't scratch.

To get games to run as nicely as Nintendo are wanting on a portable without a lot of load time, cartridges are a good fit as they are faster than disks. Probably one of the reasons the PSP used disk was because at the time is that they could store a lot more. Obviously advancements in tech have been made and sd cards/other cartridges can hold way more than before. Disks are also much cheaper, as you said.

I just buy their consoles for their exclusive titles, which is more than half of what I play overall. This looks interesting

So apparently everything Nintendo told us about the Switch yesterday is all they're planning to do for the rest of the year

Of course keep in mind third party companies could still come out and talk about their Switch games before, but still If Ninendo's only going to have 2 to 3 months to promote this thing then they better have a good plan for it.

Person who has proven credible in the past (got the system right) is saying region free, multi-touch screen (optional on all games as all games have to work with the system docked for TV use), and one of her sources says the battery life is max three hours (this source is an Ubisoft worker, dev kit may have same battery as retail).

three hours make sense for a mobile device running such games. Like run an URE4 game on your phone it'll die in a couple hours, too.

Edit: no backwards compatibility (physically) with WiiU or 3DS. New carts are bigger than the 3DS ones. Might be virtual compatibility.

I don't understand why they showed Skyrim in the advertisement, when it hasn't even been confirmed to release on the Nintendo Switch.
Don't give up hope. I think it was gamestop or IGN (but I'm not sure on that) reached out to all the developers listed and most of them said the same thing almost verbadum ("we aren't confirming any titles"). So it may just be a blanket statement Nintendo had their third parties hand out.

imo based on the leaks I stated above, they have enough to slowly talk about it in little bursts until the release. I don't see why they don't so that to keep up discussion/hype. Pretty sure they did that with the new Pokemon and it worked.

3 hours!? Thats way too short for me. Imo anything under 6 is unacceptable.
Ever played a 3D game on your smart phone? Even if the three hour thing is just a devkit version with a shorter span, the tech for batteries hasn't caught up with the rest of the tech. You won't get anywhere near 6. There is literally no hardware out there that could run games that look like that on a reasonable sized device that isn't insanely expensive. Even the 3DS had a battery life of around 3-5 hrs.

Not much they could've done regardless. Perhaps we'll see a battery expansion pack. Probably getting a power cord for the standalone device, too, so you can charge it in a public outlet if need be. Sorry, dude.
