The steam deck is selling about as well as the PS Vita in an equivalent point in its life, so I wouldn’t call it popular, as much as it just fills in a nice niche.

Right, its secret sauce to not being considered a failure is that it gets its games "for free" without needing to have exclusive versions developed. And because they refuse to make it a loss leader it doesn't cost Valve money to put them out there at whatever rate the market can bear.

I have ignored Nintendo news for a couple weeks because the Switch 2 news was getting even dumber than usual.

A couple weeks later and... nothing has changed and the Switch 2 news is still dumb. I am glad they didn't have YouTube when I was younger. These "creators" are making a fortune off of saying nothing and poorly predicting an industry's forecasts to children.

In other news, I picked up Pikmin 4 again and it is as good as it was when I started. Very fun!

And that’s why they try and make and sell the consoles as cheap as they can.

I get the feeling they might be grumpy that they can no longer sell for under 200 honestly.
I mean $199 USD still isn't bad for a Switch Lite considering you're getting a DS that has a much bigger screen, Nvidia graphics, decent battery life, multi-player, and can be put in a backpack on the way to school. It doesn't fully replace that market, but its a decent merger

I am almost sad that they didn’t just make the Switch fold like the old SP and DS

Could have called it DSwitch
Pronounced
Da Switch

Last I heard, that it was going to be revealed during the next Direct; just like what they've been predicting for the past year or so.
You joke but they actually never do this, its always in a seperate Youtube video in order to not overshadow everything else in the direct.

Edit: Speaking of which, given that its now Tuesday afternoon with no announcement, I guess those so-called leaks about a direct on Wednesday of this week were bullshit. Wonder what repercussions they'll face?

The current theory is they'll reveal a direct tomorrow that's scheduled for Thursday, just before the XBOX thing. Its as much guesswork as anything else, but revealing Hi-Fi Rush (and presumably other ports) would segue well into Phil Spencer etc. discussing the cross-platform plans for Microsoft.

and if they don't reveal a direct tomorrow then current theory will be that they'll reveal a direct on Thursday scheduled for Friday, and if they don't do that then on Friday reveal a Monday direct?

It’s all just speculation being blown way out of proportion, even when it’s someone else’s. A Nintendo Everything article from a few days ago announced a “rumor” that a Partner Showcase was happening this week, and the actual content of the article was “some guy on some podcast said he thinks there might be one soon”. There was also a big “leak” (read: my uncle works at Nintendo and he said this was totally happening) a couple days ago that the Switch 2 would be backwards compatible, which… no shit? Does anyone not think it’ll be backwards compatible?

I really like speculating about this sort of thing and reading other peoples’ predictions, but don’t call it a rumor when it’s an educated guess at most.

Nintendo of Brazil fucked up and revealed the name early: Switch Ultra. Possibly a local version of Ultra Switch. This was in a youtube video that they near immediately then hid and renamed.

do you have a source for that?

This forum post is the first thing I found of it. Suppose it could be pretty easily faked but if multiple people are talking about it then we'll have to see.

Switch Ultra ain't the worst name. Ultra is a good word, and the boomer in me likes that they're going back to the "Thing" > "Super Thing" scheme. Ultra implies an upgrade, and confused people can be directed to the Nintendo and Super Nintendo being two different things. Also, the Switch didn't have a billion million peripherals called the "Switch _____" to get people confused like the Wii did. Personally, I think it's a better distinction than the WiiU was, but I'm also not a marketing professional (thank Christ).

:optimistic:: If this is real, and a reveal is imminent, then that means we're finally going to see Prime 4 soon. I'm giddy.

Ultra Switch/Switch Ultra wouldn't be the worst thing. It reminds me of the PS4 Pro, but I doubt normies would make that connection and get confused.
