The what? Nintendo fans don't exactly see the Switch as a graphical powerhouse.
Which is why they always bring up that graphics don't matter when having arguments with other people. Obviously gameplay is king, but they were pretty excited when Metroid Prime Remastered looked like a modern game.

As usual the two extremes are loudest, graphics don't matter and graphics are of utmost importance. To be fair, you see a lot more of the former, at least among older gamers.

I think of good graphics as a bonus, but there is a limit to my tolerance. I think there's a good reason even most indie games don't dip back into 2nd gen graphics.

Both extremes are retarded. Aesthetics matter, but those can work or not work regardless of the hardware.

My own favorite example of "better hardware not necessarily being better aesthetically" is Mario The Lost Levels. On the All-Stars version they just recycle the graphics from SMB.... while the original Famicom version actually had new graphics and some levels (particularly Worlds A thru D) had trippy colors and visuals, which are completely lost in All-Stars.

Additionally, while "graphics" might not matter, they do give devs options. Things like expanding color pallettes, background scrolling and eliminating N64/PS2 era fog all made games better and unlocked choices for devs.

SMB2 technically had new assets but you'd be hard pressed to tell. The All-Stars version still looks better, all things considered.

Out of nowhere, the first Red Dead Redemption is coming to Switch and PS4.
https://youtube.com/watch?v=1cpiMH28Z88By extension, the Switch version will probably be the new best way to play RDR1 on PC.
Gonna get that lol.
Japanese Playstation used to follow the same layout (O to accept and X to cancel, which also made sense on a cultural level, while it was the reverse in the West).
I had the same confusing experience on the Steam Deck with the A button being on the bottom and the Y on the top, took me a few hours to flex my memory muscles.
So that's the reason the Japanese went with that layout, its a cultural thing. Huh. Fair enough. I've gotten mostly used to it by now, it was just strange going from Xbox for so long, to Nintendo.

Having both is awesome, but given the choice, I'll take a smooth running game any day of the week, old graphics or no. A remaster is nice when they nail it, but many times, it's better just to have the game than risk a fuck up. Also planning on getting MPR, I have a fair few games on my list lol.

If you want to fully pimp your console, there are aftermarket shells for the system and the joycons, even fancy ones that are transparent or ones that re-add a d-pad. You can also get new LED light strips for the controllers that are in different colours, I think there are even LED kits for glowing buttons and the like. Not sure if there are custom shells for the OLED though because if I'm not mistaken its metal? But even a dpad on the joycons is a nice upgrade.
I regret my LED "upgrade", it makes the buttons harder to push. I have to get the - button with my fingernail.

The All-Stars version still looks better, all things considered.
This is probably the single worst thing that I've ever seen in my entire life.

To me with a switch 2, if it isn't backwards compatibly, its a no go for me, but i seriously wonder the rumors that say the new Nvidia chip will support DLSS or RTX on the switch. think, ray tracing, on a fucking nintendo switch. But to me a switch 2 needs to have a couple things to sell me.
1. Backwards compatiblity
2. some older switch games get a patch for a performance boost.
3. Battery life similar to modern switch units (4-7 hours)
4. Achievements for games would be nice
5. and fucking more than 64gb of internal storage like on the OLED model

Steam Deck can do it, and thats using AMD hardware.

I kind of dread a new Switch having DLSS, because then everything will use it and the games will still all be running at 480 - 720p, just with a layer of AI vaseline over top. All the times I've tried DLSS with look fine stationary, but when things start moving it becomes a blurry blob or weirdly distorted. I already mod Switch games to disable TAA and blurring filters (specifically with Xenoblade, they went overboard) because I prefer a sharp but jaggy image over a blurry image.

That game actually took account of on-tv pixel shortening back in the day. If you play on emulator (or on Wii, lol) the background images will look stretched. Super noticeable on the globe image, which appeared circular on tvs but stretched on most emulators.

Interesting. Considering that the Joy-cons are 80 bucks a pair, and that means a lot to me at this point in my life, I'd rather go after practical, proven upgrades like metal rails and sticks.

Backwards compatibility would mean keeping the same chip port. From what I recall, it took them forever just to bump up the cartridge memory to 64gb. The wii got away with it with game cube games because both were disc based.

Otherwise have no issues with everything else. Give us 500 gigs of internal memory minimum, that cost me 30 for a sim card that could do that, so that should be easy on Nintendo's end, and yeah, hand out achievements, I'm sad I'm not getting pinged playing Extella Link

I wanted universal achievements before but now I think the further Nintendo is away from what Sony and Microsoft are doing, the better.

I mean on one hand I'm not getting points for beating games, which is a little sad. On the other the Switch is the first console I've had since the Wii WAY back when I was little that doesn't feel like a glorified multimedia player, but a genuine game console you're meant to PLAY with. There's a certain amount of joy I get that just doesn't happen with my Xbox One X.

Yeah, I understand that. Even the Wii sort of felt that way, in fact every system since the PSP has.

I remember being pretty impressed by my PSP being a portable multimedia player; reading comics, web browsing, watching movies, listening to music on it, etc. It was even before smartphones, so of course it was pretty amazing. I was a teenager so naturally I ate that up, but now yeah, there's a certain appreciation for simplicity the Switch sort of harkens back to a bit and I like that. Kinda reminds me of just booting up a GameCube.

It's not that that isn't cool, I absolutely abuse my Xbox One X for blu ray playing and streaming. BUT... I miss the days of just me and my DS lite, playing Lego Star Wars II and Pokemon. No internet, never got the pack that allowed that, so it was completely off the grid. Just me and my games on a system that felt barely more powerful than 1960's NASA flight computers. The Switch has given me that back. Sure it has the Shop but that's all it is. It allows me to focus on gaming and not think " hey, I wanna watch a movie now", completely ruining the session.

If I want a multimedia device with full internet connection that's also a handheld, it's called a Steam Deck or that Asus handheld. But even then, their high performance comes with trade offs, notably possibilities of chip shortages and poor battery life. I'm happy with my purchase man. It's not a race car, but I don't want it to be, already have a Xbox One X for that.
