Well, I decided to fund raise another Konami casino and bought the classic Castlevania and Contra Collection, each costing 5 bucks on the eShop. So far...

Castlevania 1. Really nice game, I love the gotich aesthetic and the pastiche of enemies inspired in classic horror movies. The game is hard but never feels unfair until the last stages (motherfuking flying medusas heads). I beat it twice, first time by save scuming and second time restricting myself to save at the beginning of every stage

Castlevania 2. I knew it had bad rep but when I played it (with minimal use of a guide for the obnoxious parts). I really had a fun time playing it. I digged the pseudo non-linear progression. I endured Metroid 1 for the NES before, so this time it was just a walk in the park.

Castlevania 3. I haven't finished it yet but it's basically Castlevania 1 on steroids. The first levels were deceptively easy, but now I'm on the last stages and every step is a battle of pain and misery. I also went blind and I ended up doing the Alucard route, supposedly the hardest in the game lol. I might try the Sypha route in a second playthrouht.

Meanwhile, I have been playing the contra games with a friend. Right now we are in the middle of Super C and it has been just raw shoot 'em up goodnes.
The Japanese version of CV3 is easier and has different/better music.

The name change isn't my favorite thing in the world, but at least we have a general release date. Btw, since people here have more knowledge in translation drama than I do, how good are Aksys' translations in general? The two previous games had alright translations as far as I could tell.
My memories of bad/dubious translations from Aksys were Tokyo Xanadu and a bunch of otome games but that was a long time ago.
Although my trust in english translations of japanese games remains next to zero because there are far too many examples proving their poor quality in many games, so it doesn't matter much which TL team is in charge anyway. Especially with the [current year] climate.

Which is why I'm glad the Switch is region-free (and have two separate eshop accounts on the same device unlike the Vita) meaning I can stick with the original japanese releases, like I plan to do with Death Mark, NG and the new sequel.

How is the emulation? Especially with Super C which doesn't have an Arcade Archives release. I've heard there's noticable issues/glitches with any games that aren't console games.

The Anniversary collection have the japanese version of all the games, IIRC. I will give it a shot to Akumajō Dracula 3 and see how it goes.

I have never played theses games before, so I couldn't give you the most accurate answer. However, I've had a good experience so far. Super C runs fine and I did not notice any imput lag. I only experienced a weird bug in cv1 where the screen freezed for some weird reason and I had to reload the save state.

You can usually trust M2 for emulation quality. I never noticed any problems, maybe I missed something.

The Japanese version of Contra HC is also easier, because you get 3 hp. JP Contra NES is slightly harder but has an intro cut scene and I think maps between levels or something?

Yeah I know about that stuff. To be honest I'm a weirdo who prefers the American version of Contra Hard Corps. I mean one-hit-deaths is a series tradition (though I do like having the Japanese version as a "practice" version).

And yeah apparently Contra actually had a plot in the Japanese version which it doesn't in the USA. Happened to many NES games actually. Karnov is another one. And past the NES, the PC-Engine CD version of R-Type added cutscenes between levels which I wish someone would fansub.

There's a new Monster Rancher game coming? Fucking sweet! I spent so many hours feeding CDs to my PS1 for the original version to find the best monsters. Great game, can't wait to see the new one. And don't forget -- NFC tags are cheap and your phone can probably encode/write them, so the possibilities for monster hunting are endless!

All I wanted was to see a review of the Roost coasters that Nintendo has up on their points shop. Cork with "laminated top" seems dubious to me. So I went to YouTube to find a video. Now I've seen some autistic shit before, but this is pretty darn autistic. Is this the absolute state of the ASMR community? What the fuck is wrong with these people?

Just tell me about the fucking coasters!

I already have the game case. It's great. Get one if you can!

The new Mario + Rabbids sequel really makes me wish that Rayman was in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate for some reason. Also, you can expect it to be in the best games of 2022 year end list, as far as Nintendo’s gaming is concerned.

The rabbids are just too strong.

Are they ever going to put Gamecube, Gameboy/Advance games on the switch?
GB/GBA? Eventually as part of the expansion pass, especially if the (allegedly) leaked emulator from a while back is any indication. Gamecube? Not a chance, you’re gonna buy upscaled Gamecube “remasters” for $59.99 each and you’re gonna like it.

Don't give up. There will be more Smash.

Every time a post like this is made on social media, he dies a little more inside.

If the NGC remasters are in line with the Zelda ones then I honestly wouldn't mind.

If one of the Gamecube remasters is this, in collaboration with SEGA, not gonna lie, would happily consoom regardless of the price (assuming the user reviews are positive, of course).

Hey, I’d take something like Wind Waker HD, but Nintendo’s already realized they can shit these out and make a fortune.

(And yes, I know Skyward Sword HD brought some nice quality of life upgrades, but that doesn’t excuse how lazy it was overall)
I would prefer a Xenoblade X/Xenosaga port but I'm biased. However I can't say I'd be unhappy with a Skies of Arcadia port.
And given how we randomly got Pac World and Klonoa ports, who knows what's next?

Portal 2 on Switch is a pretty good port albeit with one annoying problem that happens if you pause your console midway while it was originally connected on Internet: connection error messages will pop up anytime you finish a level or obtain an in-game achievement. It's weird and I hope there will be a patch to fix that.

I wouldn't say no to a Rayman trilogy collection on Switch just for reliving my childhood games once again, but there are still the GoG releases on PC otherwise.

But when it comes to actual port begging, a Switch port of DJ Max Respect would be nice because the PC port is online-only in addition of making you install their Xigncode3 rootkit. In the meantime, Muse Dash has a DJMax collab pack included for free, which adds fifteen tracks, with really old songs that I remember from the PSP games and Technika Tune on Vita.
