Surprised no one has mentioned this, but a few days ago,
Nintendo acquired another company by the name of SRD. Apparently SRD has been working alongside Nintendo for four decades, all the way since the 80s. I've never even heard of this company prior to the acquisition, but apparently they were integral to Nintendo's development process back in the day, as they were Nintendo's only available team of programmers (Nintendo didn't have in house programmers till the 90s). They had a hand in programming nearly every game Nintendo ever released, for every console Nintendo ever released. Since the original F-Zero, the last game they were the main programmers for, they've largely worked as a support studio.
This acquisition marks a major policy change for Nintendo in regards to acquisitions. First off, Nintendo, historically, has not been a very acquisition heavy company. They seemed almost scared of using M&A. Now this is the second major corporate acquisition for Nintendo in roughly a year (after they acquired Next Level Games on March 1). Second, this is a company that has worked alongside Nintendo for decades, and Nintendo made no attempt, as far as we know, to change the relationship till now. We could be seeing a major policy shift from the company, one that could have long term ramifications.
The only question is: whose next? HAL Laboratories? Intelligent Systems? Camelot Software Publishing? Grezzo? Good-Feel? Something bigger?
