Barely looking at gameplay videos it looks like a visual novel, which means there's little actual gameplay.
Yeah that's pretty accurate. The first one was a little more involved than most VNs but if you're comparing it to an actual game it leaves a lot to be desired.

God damn that new Pokeshit looks like fucking shit, lmao. Gamecube-tier graphics and uninspired janky looking gameplay. I remember playing the Witcher 3 port on someone else's Switch few years ago and it looked two console generations newer as far as the graphics go. Does Japan just lack the technical talent or what the fuck?

Well the long and the short of it is that they put in minimal effort because people are perfectly willing to shovel in garbage for maximum price without question. That and over 80% of Pokemon sales are non-game related and are basically stupid shit like plushies and toys.

Guess the never-ending internet sperging over one fictional character's line, just stating a dumb opinion, got me curious about that Somnium Files game.

Yes. Square and From Software are the only Japanese companies capable of making games with current gen graphics.
An appealing-looking artstyle will often trumps high-fidelity graphics, which have also become more of a liability in the development of games nowadays by taking way too long to come out or bloating the budgets (meaning less experimental stuff in return). I like japanese games because they are actually fun to play regardless of their technical prowess in terms of visuals, and some indies in the western side fit into that category as well.

Not going for the "current gen graphics" path, or whatever does this mean, doesn't mean there is a lack of talent among the development teams.

Except pokemon arceus doesn't have an appealing art style either and looks half finished.

You also have small developers with access to cheap high resolution libraries of assets and tools so even on a low budget you can achieve a level of high visual fidelity. This goes for both realistic assets and stylized ones. Graphics really are not financially restrictive and more or less comes down to technical prowess and talent of the team.

I mean geez Kao the Kangaroo is more visually striking than arceus

There are loads of experimental games that don't look low budget. VR stuff is almost entirely experimental and they still look like better games visually.

I don't really care about the Pokemon game, I just stated that the idea japanese games as a whole (or games from a different region as well) were somehow required to have "next-gen visuals", and their absence to be related as "a lack of talent", to be incredibly stupid.

There are a good number of Japanese games that do show a lack of talent. That's true, they can pump out the garbage like nobody's business especially when there are financial incentives to do so. They're no better or worse than anyone else when it comes to making bad games or good games.

I mean anime being 99% shit isn't just a meme, it's a fact. This also applies to games too.

Are you on the rag? Have you seen some of Nintendo's recent games? They're gorgeous.
It really depends because stuff like Metroid or even the new Kirby game don't really looks like they have a high ceiling in terms of making everything looking as graphically impressive as it could be like Xenoblade and Mario do.

Fire Emblem is the same genre as Balder's Gate and Divinity Original Sin and Fire Emblem looks closer to something on the low end.

It's good to know that after all these years it still comes back to "MUH GRAPHICS".

That said, there's a difference between graphics being "top of the line" and looking good, and Legends Arceus is neither.

I need to go back to Grandia. Started the first one. Got to the ruins where you meet the three girls.
Need to get back so I can complete it and the sequel

An autistic slapfight over autistic things? On kiwifarms? What is the world coming to

Anyways, on games looking good on switch: I think Mario Odyssey is a good example of stylish visuals and small touches making a fantastic looking game even on a platform as neutered as switch.
