I'm shocked how much love Cotton Reboot has gotten.

If you are talking about the rolling ball in a maze puzzles, you can cheat them by flipping the maze over and then just rolling the ball in over the stage's flat bottom. I didn't find those to be all that bad anyway, given that they were so rare a challenge.

There's zero PS3 games on the list unless you count Persona 5.

The only Japan Studio game was Bloodborne. Ghost of Tsushima made it on the list though.

I think there are only five western games on that list (Apex Legends, Dead by Deadlight, Minecraft, Undertale and Ghost of Tsushima) unless I'm missing one.
Japanese people loving their own games shouldn't come as a surprise honestly.

Yeah that's what I did for that trial dungeon you're described but I did that part of the game docked. I don't think it would have been possible to cheat that way if I played directly on handheld. There was another trial that used the gyro feature to swing a hammer rather strongly against a ball, not something that can be easily done in handheld mode again.

DKC was made in the UK, Tetris was made in the former eastern block, not sure if you count that as "west" or not. Looking through the whole list, I am pleasantly surprised that DQB2 made the list. But on the other hand, stinkers like FFXI and XIV made it too.
 
Any recommendations for Switch games? Got 60 bucks of currency cards from a friend. I have most first party games worth getting. Hidden gems or even weird/shitty games that are really fun?

If you like boomer shooters, Dusk is quite good, and Quake is a very competent port. Duke Nukem 3D is also pretty well done and lets you choose between different rendering options.

If you want a surprisingly fun flight game, Sky Rogue delighted me from the start. Very stylistic, if you can stand the mid-90s Sega Saturn style visuals. Also, Cruis’n Blast ended up being very fun for an arcade cabinet port. There’s a smattering F good Star Wars games too, like Jedi Outcast and Episode 1 Racer.

Personally, this is why I like my switch. I don’t dive for shitty ports of titles that are far better on other systems (e.g. Doom, Witcher 3) but for fun experiences that work beautifully on a primarily handheld system.

I have and love all these games... except Sky Rogue. That shit looks gorgeous and really fucking fun. Just bought it.

Cannot recommend Cruis'n Blast enough. It is really fun. And right now I am playing more Astral Chain. Loving it! I lost points for breaking crates because I guess a cop wouldn't do that. Should have seen that coming and known better.

Dragon Quest Builders II. Just google the release trailer and if it doesn't immediately look like shit to you then I'd guarantee you love it.
As an Indie/downloadable title Itll Dew 2 is great.
Return of the Obra Dinn is another good indie, if you want a giant logic puzzle.
Sakuna of Rice and Ruin is a fun platformer with rice growing simulator elements. Its a long and deep game, lots of people adored it.

Exclusives:
Don't sleep on Xenoblade 2 if you overlooked it the first time.

Oh man I’m glad I could help, and you’re in for a treat with Sky Rogue. Keep getting those research points and try to beat the final boss to unlock the really strong Aeros, including ones with Independence Day-style blaster guns and a beam cannon that penetrates mountains and basically breaks the game.

Also Sky Rogue tip: the IR missiles initially seem useless as they can only be used on rear aspect of enemy planes (it homes in on engine heat) but they are super maneuverable. As the aeros get harder in the later levels they get very good at dodging missile but the IR ones can more reliably hit them.

I really liked the first Dragon Quest Builders. Totally forgot they made a sequel. And Obra Dinn is one I can toss a recommendation toward as well.

Have a lot of friends that played and enjoyed Sakuna. Guess I should grab that. Sadly I have bought every Xenoblade game at release and didn't enjoy any... but I keep trying! It is a series that I should like. But I never do. :(

Thanks for the tips @Fwiffo. Game just downloaded and I am gonna play. Pretty excited! It is one of my favorite genres.

I'm late to the party but the ones I would recommend are:

-Banner of the Maid. It's a turn-based strategy sets in the french revolutionary era, where you play as Napoleon Bonaparte's sister who is a officer army and also a "Maid" (a small group of women having special powers). I personally enjoyed it although the game had two main drawbacks which are an imperfect balance within certain units and the lack of french and/or japanese dub (it's only voiced in chinese which I've turned off in the options by default).

-Mad Rat Dead. A rhythm + platform game in which you play as an undead lab rat trying to find revenge on humans. Great soundtrack overall. Beware some stages can be challenging due of sudden traps but it's possible to rewind time upon dying. Be careful to not die too much however.

-The Battle Cats Unite (previously called Futari de! Nyanko Daisensou) which recently got an english translation update for the Switch release. It's available as a physical cartridge to import although it's also available for cheaper on the japanese eshop (but it requires a secondary eshop account + prepaid card through play-asia). It was originally a mobile gacha game but the Switch version removed any kind of micro-transactions, added couch co-op modes, minigames and a bunch of new units. The goal is basically to conquer Japan and the rest of the world (then the whole universe) by sending your kitten troops against the enemy tower while defending yours.



I also did recommend The Talos Principle and Xmorph Defense earlier in this thread because they're really cheap right now (in the EU eshop, dunno about NA).
Would also suggest Part-Time UFO (a physics-based puzzle game) which isn't in sale where I live but the price is already low enough to consider it.

East Asiasoft has already tapped into genres like this for shovelware, give it time soon you'll be flooded with awful clones just like the Break games.

You have modern takes on the genre that people probably don't know about
