Apparently Humongous Entertainment announced that Putt Putt and Freddie Fish are coming to the switch on January 3rd!

is it too much to ask for the mid 90s versions of Carmen Sandiego to be released

What SE should really do with DQ is refine the creation process to put a little more money into art assets (such as character models and individual pieces of wearable clothing) and a little less into internal politicking like building new game engines or engaging in FF-esque iterative design. I think they are turning off a big untapped customer base (like women, for instance) by not putting that extra bit of care into letting you fully dress your dollies.
This was in DQ9, knowing how japs are, the backlash from that has probably made them try and avoid every feature from that game going forward

And was that because they gave the game more art assets or because they took away random encounters (which I, at least, am not complaining about,) gave it multiplayer functions at the expense of single-player balancing and content and downscaled it to be a 3DS release?

What was actually bad in the game is irrelevant, the japs dont see it like that

I looked it up on wikipedia, its because they were going to do away with turn-based battles. Not sure why the person who was responding to me thought I wanted them to do that, because I don't and didn't recommend it (I wanted better character models, wearable armor and less financial waste) but there we go. I guess you could say that since they had to fix the original design plan (RTB) that I would have wanted them to just plow ahead with it? No, they just shouldn't have fucked it up in the first place. How they thought they were going to increase the series' popularity in the west with a 3DS title is beyond me but hey, Japan.

Looking at that new list of Top 100 popular games of all time from japan, their eye for quality leaves much to be desired.

Wait, what does "popular" mean? Because there's no way in hell Breath of the Wild is Japan's best selling game. Is it a voting thing, because it shouldn't win that either...

Well, whichever way, that list is awful, just the same ten series of games over and over again. They have some great game creators but yeah, they do a lot of buying based solely on branding.

They polled 50,000 people asking them for their favorite game.

Was it 50,000 Famitsu subscribers? Because those fan vote things are always crap, they don't mean anything. I can tell you right now that BotW is not Japan's most popular game of all time.
it aired on a TV show and I'm pretty sure it had some connections to Famitsu's readership.

Most of the Dragon quest games should not be that low. It also left out stuff like Ultima.

I've got a bunch of games for Christmas:
-Cotton Reboot
-Raging Loop
-Neo Atlas 1469
-R-Type Final 2
-The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild

Cotton Reboot is a nice little shmup game keeping the old 90s anime look. I'm also liking BotW although my two main complaints are the forced gyro in certain trial dungeons (even if I play handheld mode) and the weapon durability feature (it doesn't seem like I can repair anything on the verge of breaking)

PS3 and 4 really weren't good enough, they only looked good compared to the Xbox, comparing them to previous consoles showed a market in collapse. The market growth over there was in hh/mobile, its why JP companies put "full" installments of JP-centric franchises on handhelds. I indirectly touched on this above with 3D Land being considered a full title (along with stuff like Fire Emblem, Animal Crossing, etc.) but other companies did it too. Stuff like Monster Hunter and Dragon Quest got PSP-first games instead of PS3-first games because the PS3 was a sales disappointment while the PSP was not. And as the handheld market has died those games didn't migrate back to PS4 (well, DQ did), they migrated to mobile or Switch.

Obviously the PS3 was a turd wrapped in a waffle-iron but the PS4 wasn't and I can't offer a real explanation as to why Japan seemed uninterested in it. I think that's a shame, when a company puts out a good product to inexplicably little interest. They certainly have their work ahead of them if they want to fix the PS5 in Japan, but I don't think they have any interest in doing that, not when the rest of the world can't even find any of them, anyway.
The japanese game industry struggled with the introduction of HD graphics from the 7th gen and handhelds became refuges for many game companies and snowball-roll'ed from there. The 8th gen was kinda a mess as well.

The Switch being potato hardware that gathers both the home console and portable console userbases in one device does help a lot of its success, not to mention there are games for many types of audience. I can have games for family and irl friends alongside of shit that I personally do enjoy as an enthusiast.

I played a bunch of Astral Chain and it is easily Platinum's most straightforward game. It was easy to start and fun to play. They might have finally learned how to make games!!
I did like Vanquish on PC and it's something I wouldn't mind to replay if it gets ported on Switch. I have yet to play the first Bayonetta game however so no idea what I'll be getting myself into compared to Astral Chain that I've previously completed.

There are literally more Dragon Quest games on that list than games from outside of Japan
