Why? the n64 controller is one of the stupidest controllers ever made. I've got like 6 of the fucking things. Only two of them has a joystick that doesn't make you want to smash the fucking thing. Early 64 games had this problem where they made you spin the fucking stick really fast(mario party, mario 64 etc.), inevitably causing your controller to die. Also the pad being up on the left and the whole fucking design. Worst fucking controller i've ever owned and used.
I want an external controller without resorting to wireless Mayflash adapters or elatively spotty hacking solutions, but getting a proper Pro Controller seems redundant, considering how many similar controllers I have already.
...that, and nostalgia. I had good memories of playing someon else's Nintendo 64...

When I was at a game selling convention before the pandemic hit there was somebody there selling kits to fix busted joysticks on n64 controllers. I never needed one in my entire lifetime of owning an n64 since I was like 3 years old but like a year or so ago my stick got a bit wobblier than usual so now I'm concerned. I have no Idea how I got lucky for this long of the controller not fucking up.
We played a lot of the first Mario party game. That one had a couple of those mini games where you had to spin the control stick as fast as possible. Those games ki

I just use this for everything from emulation, including n64 games, to PC games

Controller layouts were standardized in 1997, one year after the n64 released.

Every controller since 1997 has had a similar layout to the original dualshock.

Controllers have been standardized since the original NES controller. EVERY controller since has followed that same basic design regarding the face buttons. The SNES controller established the basic design of four face buttons and the placement of shoulder buttons. Even the initial Playstation controller (the one without sticks) follows the same basic design ethos. Even the N64, for its issues with the control stick, followed that basic design. The only thing the Dual Shock did was put two sticks on the front and put them on opposite sides. And both Nintendo and Xbox have moved the sticks to change their arrangement.

How about you just come over and play some GoldenEye instead. I'll let you use my translucent purple controller. You might not be able to turn left though.
It's called "Atomic Purple" and the one I have works just fine because I'm not a autist that breaks his controllers. So I'll bring mine. You can even play Oddjob, not that it will help you much.

Clean your shit. Jesus.

Yeah...it's pretty grubby. It's what happens when you smoke, quit that shit a few months ago though, I'll get around to it. Haven't been gaming much lately anyway, but, i did play through the super metroid ascent hack the other day, fucking awesome.

No that's incorrect, there was a fucking load of bullshit controller evolutions in the 90's

Duashock brought out both analog sticks and all that others could do was swap them with the D-pad position. The Dreamcast controller came later and that was another literation of the Saturn 3d controller layout and that whole design philosophy failed.

One of the most notable ones is the N64 controller. I'm sure more often than not the big, middle fairing was used as a dildo back in the days.

The N64 controller is just the Atari Jaguar controller except the 6 face buttons are shaped differently and there's a joystick and extra trigger in place of the keypad

The N64 controller is actually a pretty good 6-button + D-pad controller actually, like I'd prob use one if ever I got into Saturn emulation

Nigger, do you smoke while you're using the controller at the same time? Holy shit.

Nigga, the Atari Jaguar controller? Nobody played the Atari Jaguar, partially because everybody though that bulky ass controller was shit. And that Saturn controller was barely used. Even when you consider them, both of those controllers still use the same basic button layout as the NES controller and SNES controller, the Saturn controller just added an analog stick and the Jaguar controller added a whole bunch of nigh useless buttons that just made the controller bulkier. You can still see basic NES and SNES design in both controllers in the face button and D-pad placement. And the Dreamcast controller was actually a great controller; felt great in your hands. It just lacked a second analog stick.

Nobody played the neo geo either but that still had a whole different lineage for controller layouts. The Dualshock won out because even the gamecube mimicked it.

The Jaguar controller and Saturn 3D controller weren't "different lineages" whatever the hell that means. They weren't even evolutions of the basic design, they were just iterations on it. The Dual Shock was also basically just an iteration of that basic design. Gamecube controller is a vastly superior iteration of that same basic design.

I just realized Metroid Dread comes out in a week. I also just remembered that I was able to snag an LE from Best Buy before scalpers got them all. I chose in-store pickup and the order page still says:

We'll let you know when it's ready. A release date for your pre-order has not been announced. We'll let you know when it's ready.

Fully expecting an email on Friday saying they had to cancel the order.

Metroid Dread looks cool, but I may hold on that to later because of Super Robot Wars 30 and Earth Defense Force 3. Next month has Shin Megami Tensei 5 and two Nippon Ichi Software games (Labyrinth of Galleria and Asatsugutori) so it's gonna be another busy month on Switch too.

A pity Super Monkey Ball Banana Mania turned out to be another blunder from Sega though, with the altered physics on Unity and Monkey Target getting the short stick. I was looking forward to it but glad I dodged a bullet there.

Dude Labyrinth of Galleri is an old game, it's in the same series as Labyrinth of refrain.
There's no real quality of life improvements compared to Refrain. You could get Refrain cheaper at this point and play through it to see if you like it, because the final boss requires insane amounts of grinding to beat because it's nothing but a 20 minute DPS check.

Asatsugutori is a visual novel. It can be done and over with in around 15 minutes.

The only thing interesting would be if SMT5 somehow usurps Metroid, but both games are looking like nobody is lining up to get them in droves, which means Nintendo is going to take that as a sign to release more animal crossing shit.
