>Pokémon Scarlet and Violet sold upwards of 23million units, almost matching Sword and Shield's numbers (from the 4+ years it's been on store shelves) within less than a year
Just kill me now man
This series is so fucked
I dunno it's a series for kids, kids enjoy the new ones, at some point I got 4 generations I like and it's ok to just be old and like the old stuff.

Second question -- name some good horror games? Or at least interesting ones that might be worth a spin? Try to avoid major franchise stuff like Outlast, Amnesia, and Resident Evil because I already know about those (also I don't like zombie games so don't even, unless they have like a really interesting gimmick).
Death Mark is a really cool Japanese adventure horror game. It's sequel NG isn't very good.

Tormented Souls on switch is a bit jank, the res is super low but reminds me a lot of an original Xbox horror titles like Obscure.

White Day is pretty cool, has a neat vibe to it if you can get past it being very Korean.

The Fatal Frame ports FF4 & 5 are good on Switch, personally I like 5 more but 4 but is a late English translation of the old Wii game which I appreciate.

Edit: Also not strictly a horror game, it's more of a highschool romance visual novel with horror elements, but I really liked Worldend Syndrome. It has a really interesting town associated with it with a spooky backstory, and the way the story comes together is really effective.

Nintendo can sell literal dog shit, slap the Pokémon logo on it and it will sell.

I can't blame kids for being kids. Lord knows I played shitty games growing up. The important thing is that once they get older, they realize it was shit, then play the good games in the franchise.

But we are talking about late-zoomers and alpha generations, as they'll continue to slop these when they grow older.

If they stick with Pokemon and game freak keeps being lazy, maybe. Look, I loved spore, but I haven't played a maxis game since. You gotta start somewhere

I mean there are some games I loved as a kid, but have given up a decade later.
I think every gamer has that. Games they loved, but if they tried playing today, would break their controller over. Kids just have a tolerance for shittiness because they've barely played anything

And that's with most things and not just games. Movies are also good examples of what kids love and but when they grow older they don't like. Thomas and the Magic Railroad, Master of Disguise and the Star Wars prequel trilogy are good examples of what I used to like until I've gotten older. As kids grow older, so too do our taste in anything.

Exactly. When I see the sales figures for the recent Pokemon games, I'm not surprised. It's popular, kids like Pikachu, and wanna play with friends. Eventually though they grow up and move on. Some won't, but most will, to bigger and better things.

Which is why Pikachu is just as much of a recognizable character for kids as Mario, Sonic, Scooby-Doo, SpongeBob, Bugs Bunny, Shrek and even Minions. Plus, kids are bound to be stupid until they do grow older.

You can already see this with early zoomzooms with Pokemon Gen 5.

But I also believe it's also ok for these people to like something else and just have different preferences. We can all collectively ignore them about Gold and Silver.

I have different preferences than someone 20 years older than me. I don't think Pacman and Donkey Kong are the pinnacle of videogame creation.

I have different preferences than someone 10 years older than me. I don't care about shmups, I don't look at the Neo Geo as god's gift to mankind.

Someone born circa 2000 is going to have different preferences to me. He will think the NES is too old, that online multiplayer games are the best, and that spending 98% of your game time on a single a F2P live service game is a perfectly reasonable thing to do.

Age is no excuse for you, I'm afraid.

So it occured to me if I was gonna ask for Horror recommendations, I might as well say what I've already got:

These are games that are straight-up sold as horror games.

Amnesia Collection - I find the mechanics fun, and I re-bought Dark Descent on PC so I could play custom stories, many of which are better than the core games (whose stories I tend to find weak).

Bioshock trilogy - Not sure why this is considered horror, its more sci-fi than anything. I've only played the first one so far, which I found okay but between this and System Shock 2 I'm starting to wonder if there's just something about Shock games that disagrees with me (though I liked the original System Shock on DOS).

Breathing Fear - This is a side-scrolling pixel horror game that often sells for a dollar. Unfortunately its kinda shit because of one major problem: your flashlight drains really fast and basically acts like a timer, so this is a game where your first few sessions will be spent just figuring out exactly where everything is so that you can speedrun the game to beat it, and I just don't care for that style. I want to be immersed and carefully explore all the nooks and crannies.

Disaster Report 4 - This is often listed as a horror game, which it kind of is and I do like that its exploring a different subject for this genre. I also own its predecessor Raw Danger on the PS2, but both are games I didn't get far in because at the time I was into something else and just not in the mood.

Dream - I bought this with the wrong expectation. The store said it was full of puzzles, so I thought it would be Anime Myst. Instead its a visual novel where between story chunks you have to do an Escape the Room session. Its not bad for what it is, just go in knowing what you're getting.

Dungeon Nightmares 1 & 2 Remastered - The best thing about the Switch collection is you still press B to blow. These were two bucks and they're decent timewasters.

Earthworms - A point n click adventure on the Switch. I liked the hints of story but didn't get far because I ran into one of those "I know what the game expects me to do but I'm not sure how to do it in this game's interface" issues.

Eyes: the Horror Game was literally given away for free for awhile, which is all you need to know.

Five Nights at Freddy's 1-4 and Sister Location. Friend bought me a physical collection. The first four seem to actually play better on Switch than on PC. That said these feel more like old-school arcade games than like anything I would call horror and I don't think I'm interested in more of this style.

Never Again - Decent game where you play as a girl with asthma, however a lot of things become unintentionally hilarious--a doll-head-monster killing you while declaring "your parents don't love you!" and a monster I lovingly call "the rubber chicken witch" just make me double over in laughter. That said I did not hate my time with this game, but I never finished it because I reached a point where I didn't know what I was supposed to do.

Perception - This is an underdog. You play as a blind woman and there's a button to tap your cane which lights up the room around you (sorta looks like vector graphics). The monster is silly looking but the game itself is actually really fun and solid. There are oddities with the story but if you can get this game during a sale its highly worth playing.

Resident Evil games - I own a lot of these, just not on Switch. I actually used to like this series but started dropping off around RE4 and nothing has gotten me back into it since. This is pretty much the only "zombie" series I've ever cared about though.

Slender the Arrival - I don't care what anyone says, I love this game, even if it is short and Slendy has become kind of a laughingstock. Yes I am looking forward to that remaster. This is another case where I don't find the story that great but for some reason the game is fun to play.

Without Escape - Another dollar game. This one is a bit like a more traditional adventure game. Has multiple endings though they're usually glorified game overs. Get if cheap or not at all.

the Yomawari games - I love these. So far I only played through the third one (the first two were spoiled for me by the Nitro Rad reviews) but damn, for once I got into both the story and the mechanics. Also the first game in the series is one I love to prank people with, just hand the controller off to my pre-teen nephew and tell him to play the tutorial....

These are games that sometimes get lopped in or may have horror elements but ain't horror games per se.

'n Verlore Verstand and Tyd wag vir Niemand (both are in English despite the whatever language the title is)--first person platform games about exploring weird dreamlike settings. I actually kind of like these. Can someone tell me if their titles translate to anything? Yes both are made by the same guy.

Dark Burial - another dollar game. Has a moody atmosphere but seems more like a puzzle-platformer (side scrolling). Didn't seem terrible or anything but I got bored of it very quickly.

Dark Souls - I have to be in the mood to enjoy this.

Doom and Quake are not horror games and I wish people would quit saying they are. They are, however, games that kick ass.

Metroid Dread is absolute garbage and probably the worst game in the Metroid series (I've never played Other M).

X-Multiply (Arcade Archives) - Shmup by the R-Type people, and one of the best shmups ever made. Leans way more into the "horror" aesthetic than R-Type does.

How is the framerate for both of these? I've heard the Switch versions have frequent dips.
I only have the Switch port of the WiiU game (Maiden of Black Water) and there wasn't anything troublesome on both docked and portable modes. But like @Baraka Obama, I'm not picky about framerate either too.

That game is censored however due of being an international modern release on all platforms (including Playstation), as it lost two skimpy gravure costumes from the original Japanese WiiU version thus making a certain story scene convoluted as a result.

Disaster Report 4 - This is often listed as a horror game, which it kind of is and I do like that its exploring a different subject for this genre. I also own its predecessor Raw Danger on the PS2, but both are games I didn't get far in because at the time I was into something else and just not in the mood.
It's not actual horror lol, Disaster Report (aka Zettai Zetsumei Toshi in Japan) is technically a survival arcade franchise
Also the fourth entry is absolute garbage and plays nothing alike to the previous games. I hope for your own sake you did not buy it at any price.

For a game whose main focus has always been about the disasters themselves, the scenarios presented in DR4 are incredibly bland and the earthquake itself completely stops existing as a threat to the player at the second half. There's no conspiracy behind the disaster like in the previous games, next to no characterization for the cast and you spend long periods where nothing happens whatsoever. It's in fact completely devoid of a plot. You go from area to area meeting people, solve a few benign problems in the form of convoluted and drawn-out fetch quests with nothing happening in-between, and then move on to the next area with no real direction of what's going on.
I also disliked how none of the prompt choices had a single impact in the story, nothing you did mattered. Not even the supposed epilogue DLC where you literally have to remind the characters who you are (and what you could have possibly done) despite it uses a cleared save data.

I know Disaster Report 4 suffered of a cursed development hell, between the 2011 tsunami and Irem shuting down its game division shortly after, but Granzella tried too hard to desperately salvage the project. I remember it was badly optimized as a demo on the base PS4, I doubt it's any better on the Nintendo Switch.

Even the Japanese-only third entry on the PSP was a much better game, in spite of the severe hardware limitations of the handheld or the abundance of benches (that also act as save checkpoints) making the stress bar meter trivial. The threat of natural disasters was looming during the entire game, unlike its successor on the PS4 (later ported elsewhere). Besides earthquakes themselves, you also get to meet several cases of flooding, buildings collapsing, landslide and a fire tornado.

I also had fun playing the raging lesbian protagonist, and prompt choices do affect the course of the game by the way you treat the characters. I remember the main heroine (Saki Honjou) was grateful of FemMC for the achieved good deeds in my playthrough run but clearly had to state "I like you but not that way". If you act like a true asshole on the other hand, there will be variations of cutscenes and dialogues where the heroine physically distances herself from the MC.

First pic: What a pretty onee-sama...!
Second pic: [Ayami Hazuki]: Eeeh... So you two... have that kind of relationship?
There is also that shy and humble rich girl (Ayami Hazuki) who can be romanced in the game, by both male and female MC. And again depending of the prompt choices, you can make Saki feels like (and later accept) she's the third wheel of the group.

The game was released in 2009 but the in-game events are set in March 2011 which is a very morbid foretelling of the Touhoku disaster.

The compatibility issue on PPSSPP was recently fixed btw as the character selection, at the start of the game, used to freeze on the emulator back then.
Worth to mention the digital version from the Japanese PSVita store patched a bug that prevented full data completion (endings, legitimate pieces of advice on how to act during disasters, etc.) that was present on the original physical.

To sum up, if you have to play this niche franchise, just stick to the first three games. Do not bother with DR4 at all.

I ended up replacing them myself with hall effect ones. Was surprisingly easy to do, the hardest part was all the tiny ribbon cables in the joycons - thank fuck the kit I got had a complementary pair of tweezers or I would have lost my mind.

So far so good and no drift issues, will report back of the replacement sticks fall apart.
