Ah yes. The timeless "Nintendo killed their third party support" line. 2000 was almost a quarter century ago and last I checked, Switch was the system to be on.
they'll fuck up again somehow, just you wait

Now it’s official, the switch has outsold the wii and PS1
Switch lifespan.png

Expect at least four more years of the Switch

The Switch success is just a reflection of the downfall of the triple A third party industry as a whole. Back on the days of the Gamecube-Wiiu, Nintendo consols were missing amazing games from companies like Konami, Rockstar, Ubisoft and even EA that basically carried the sales from rival brands.

Nowadays these companies are either zombies or sad shells from their former selves and the rival brands that directly depended from these companies have barely anything to show because they discarded their own IPs in favor of third-parties IPs that are now mostly dead, by default this makes the Switch more appealing since Nintendo at least can pump more than 3 exclusives per year, and western third party in general is now mostly either Indie studios or double A studios that won't miss the chance to make a quick buck on the Switch.

Different from a decade ago, the average Nintendo consol owner is barely missing anything besides like 2 worthwhile games per year that can be easily obtained on PC or a last-gen consol, and after the complete disgrace of games like Cyberpunk 2077 and Battlefield 2042+the fact the most hyped western triple A game from the latest times being a Harry Potter game that is in complete development hell just reaffirm this point further.

By the end of the day these brand loyalty spergs that people constantly mocked years prior on gaming boards for barely having anything to play on their overpriced outdated systems were the ones that got the last laugh.

My body is ready. I am very glad to hear that they are going to keep rolling with what they've got.

Anyway anyone else play the grandia games?
Yooooooooooo bro Grandia is comfy. I was saying over in the Final Fantasy thread that were it not for Chrono Trigger and Grandia, you could consider some of the better Final Fantasy games like FFVI as the best JRPG. I really want to include Radiant Historia but that would be irresponsible of me.

I sorta see Nintendo's success as sort of a reflection on why Japanese gaming as been making a comeback in recent years.

It's funny, as a little over a decade ago, Japanese gaming was quickly being left behind by all the new experiences being brought about by Western developers thanks to the power of the HD console generation, and simple, colorful experiences were seen as "outdated", with tons of games from Japan not selling as well or getting as much hype as the cinematic blockbusters that were enthralling critics and players. Even Nintendo, although the Wii was a big success, was mocked for not trying to go that route (and when they did enter HD development with the Wii IU, it failed horrendously). Hacks like Keiji Inafune were calling Japan's gaming industry "over" and that they needed to Westernize or die, leading to many of the ill-advised reboots of their properties and such.

Fast forward to now, and Japan, while not quite as prolific as during the 5th and 6th console generations, are now back to creating games that are beloved all over the world, and are even getting a much warmer reception from critics and fans. Just look at how the Switch, while not very powerful or giving the most cutting-edge visuals, is still selling gangbusters.

Meanwhile, the formerly dominant Western gaming industry, while still raking in billions every year, are now being lambasted for over focusing on visuals and cinematic spectacle over trying to create anything fun. That may have been enough a few console generations ago, but with graphical progress slowing down with every passing month, it doesn't cut the mustard anymore. Not helped by the money-grubbing the publishers like to do in order to keep those investors happy, because they have sunk too much into this area to back out. Basically, they're doubling down on it rather than adapting or going back to the drawing board. Ironically, the Japanese company that is arguably the most maligned nowadays, Konami, is doing very similar antics to the likes of EA and Activision.

The Western Triple A gaming scene has just become too bloated and risk-adverse, and people are looking for fresh and fun experiences, not ones that are only focused on cutting-edge graphics and monetization out the wazoo.

I'm amazed by the graphics and everything. The npcs say many different things. Soundtrack is good and the cutscenes. Grandia 2 its even better apparently

Switch’s success is a testament to the sheer motive power of Nintendo’s IP. People want Mario kart and Zelda over and over again, and they’re willing to play it on whatever godforsaken hardware Nintendo creates.

And y’know what? Good on them. The market is already saturated between Sony and Microsoft, with their hardware basically being indistinguishable. Nintendo is playing to their strengths.

Hey look, I was right:
Nintendo tends to get pretty damn complacent when they're on top, and they're practically unchallenged right now. That's why I'm thinking they'll hold back on a Switch successor for a while - why bother fragmenting their own market when they've got one do-it-all system?

and @Marissa Moira was WROOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOONG
Nintendo's own higherups want to do a whole new piece of hardware for 2023.

Basically it looks like they're going to try their hand to mimic apple's hardware release schedule with this new platform.

Sounds more like you were right for the wrong reasons.
Even the Wii U had a close life cycle length to just about everything else. I wouldn't doubt there was a hard pivot because of Corona-chan bringing in countless new Switch owners, breathing new life into the already middle-aged Switch. It just doesn't make sense to release a successor for a while.

Fine by me, though. I just wish they'd release an indestructible controller already.

Yeah, it is pretty interesting how, despite having weaker hardware and still being a decade behind when it comes to online stuff, Nintendo still manages to not only sell, but sell to such an unfathomable degree.

(Warning! Potentially autistic rant incoming that near-directly borrows lines from other videos!)

Honestly, I think it's good to look into why. I mean, you could just say "of course it's doing well, as its primary audience are children and/or soyboy manbabies with more money than intellect", but that's not really accurate. Other gaming companies have tried similar things to Nintendo, with nowhere near the same result.

I really do think it boils down to the fact that they still deliver fun, unique, and exclusive experiences that can't be found anywhere else. Even though others such as Sony do have many games only available on their systems, the problem is that they tend to blend together into the similar kind of game; third-person, cinematic, story-driven games with more focus on award-potential than crafting something truly new. While these games can still be fun, they don't do much to distinguish themselves, and Sony shutting down their Japan Studio which did focus on colorful and unique titles, presumably in order to go full steam ahead with award-bait stuff only adds to this.

Compare them, and most other major developers to Nintendo. Sure, they do tend to rely on existing IPs, but when it comes to their big releases, they try to make them stand out from most of what is out there currently. We have Super Mario Odyssey, which not only returned to the formula of Super Mario 64, but added in new movement mechanics and the Capture mechanic. Then there's Metroid Dread, which gives a more action-focused take on the Metroidvania, alongside it being 2.5D and bringing in new elements thanks to enemies like the EMMI. Animal Crossing New Horizons as well, which still delivers a colorful and lighthearted simulation in real time compared to all the more realistic ones out there. And of course, The Legend Of Zelda Breath Of The Wild, which still remains unique in the open-world action space thanks to physics and chemistry engine, along with the freedom given.

Heck, even when they do go for new IPs, they still try to make them things that you can't get anywhere else. Whether it's the Splatoon series which focuses more on map control via ink rather than killing, Ring Fit Adventure combining a fitness workout with an RPG, or ARMS having you used ranged fists for a fighting game, they almost always try to bring something new to the table.

And when you provide people with experiences that not only differ from the typical Triple-A release, that is what will get them interested enough to buy the system, as suddenly, the lower-quality graphics and dated online doesn't seem like all that much of a price to pay for. Because, minus a few exceptions, you can't find these kinds of games on anything else. Only exclusively from Nintendo.

Nintendo may not give the highest quality visuals, the most sophisticated online, and they even **** all over their fans at times thanks to harsh copyright enforcement and things like Joycon Drift. But when it comes to delivering experiences that are exclusive to just their systems and which provide game styles rarely found anywhere else these days, they treat you like a fricken emperor. Like, on a level few others can match.
