You know, its getting to a point where these console companies should just bundle these old 80's NES ports of arcade games with their machine for free rather than charge them separately.

40 years later and these asshole are still going to charge people more than a dollar for these crusty-ass games. They aren't even worth the quarter their arcade counterparts used to take.

The issue is that it's a outdated arcade port that serves zero purpose today other than as a curiosity. Why play downgraded mid 80's arcade ports that add nothing, when you can play the original arcade games? It's silly.

Because it depends on the game... sometimes the NES ports offer their own flavor of enjoyment.

B-Wings (that shump that is packaged in every chinese bootleg cart) is one of them. If you've ever played the arcade version, aside from the graphics, there are distinct differences between the two

Arcade: You start out gimped, weapons appear on screen from time to time but are fixed regarding what weapon you get (e.g. stage 1 you always get the side weapon and deal with enemies/barriers that you have to shoot from the side). No music, only sfx so you wind up hearing the "pulsating" sound throughout the entire game. Bosses go down with 1 hit once you remove the crap it has in front of it, but the incoming rockets NEVER STOP. You can see enemies appear below you to give you a hint regarding what you're about to face, but they can also shoot bullets at you when they are below you.

NES: You start out by choosing whatever weapon you want. This happens at specific stages after you die but for the ones that don't you're stuck with your gimped weapon when you revive. Has music, but it's the same song for each stage (with weapon and without weapon have their own music though) except for the boss which is just a bunch of sirens over and over again. Speaking of bosses, the rockets stop coming towards you after a certain point so you are able to defeat the boss more easily. Graphics is just a blue screen with black-outlined boxes that represent the "floor", and go away when the boss appears. Enemies do now show up below you, so it's basically whatever comes out in front of you, but they are more manageable because after an enemy wave there is a rest period. There's also a fuck-ton of items/powerups to collect but I'm not sure if they are the same as the arcade or new additions. Incidentally, some stages require only ONE specific weapon to get through, so you're basically planning in advance on how to beat the game unless you farm for lives and just brute-force your way through (good luck with that).

Just going through the Nintendo Online emulator thing is hilarious because there's this huge pool of games but realistically anyone is just going to play a Mario game or The Legend of Zelda. Are people legitimately going to play Nintendo Wrestling or Nintendo Soccer or Kid Icarus?

The SNES on the other hand has a handful of games that are at least servicable in 2026 in the way indie games are, even though there's some issues with modern sensibilities (Earthbound's inventory system for example). Super Metroid, A Link To The Past, Super Mario World and Earthbound are clearly the cream of the crop in terms of Nintendo first parties, with practically every other decent game ranging from "It's alright, but why should I play this?" like F-Zero and Super Mario Kart, to "This is a pretty good game, I'm glad I can purchase it on Steam instead of through an online emulator" like Final Fantasy 3 or Chrono Trigger.

There's absolutely no reason other than pure greed why they couldn't just bundle the SNES Classic games in one collection (even discounting the third party games) or pack in about 10 SNES games to everyone's Nintendo accounts. It's like 20mb maximum on a 256GB hard drive, like an ant in a bucket of rice.

I'm just pissed that they force us to re-buy the games again and again. The Wii was the first console that could let you buy and play older games digitally, the Wii U could still play those games but often offered a discounted upgrade to the Wii U version. The Switch dropped all support for those games and forces you to rebuy them as a subscription.

Realistically speaking the original Zelda and Metroid are not worth playing unless you have a lot of nostalgia for them. I'm saying that as a big fan of both series who owned both those games on NES.

A lot of the really old games are basically unplayable without their surrounding ecosystem The NES Zelda and Metroid games came with massive manuals that explained the game mechanics in ways that was not possible to have in-game, and contain a lot of relevant context about the world of the game. Magazines provided hints and details as to how to tackle puzzles and strategies which helped make the games much more enjoyable. There's a reason why we don't play games like Zork anymore.

Just got home from watching Super Mario Galaxy. Enjoyed it more than the first movie. Brie Larson is better suited for voice work so I don’t have to see her face in another movie.

Other than the first trailer, I avoided anything about the movie as much as possible because everything is spoiled so easily with social media. I didn’t know Fox McCloud was going to be in the movie. And I am super happy that Nintendo included him in the movie. And he didn’t feel like a waisted opportunity.

Hopefully we get a Star Fox movie with an appearance of Star Wolf and his team.

I think a lot of later NES games like Super Mario Bros 3, Kirby's Adventure and Startropics are worth playing today. I just don't think there's much value in a lot of the older first party NES titles unless you have nostalgia for them as many of us do. They're in that weird place a lot of Atari 2600 games are where if you played them when you were a kid, you get that hit of dopamine if you go back and play them now, but they're almost too archaic for someone new to get into them.

Yeah, I really don't feel sympathy anymore for people who keep buying and re-buying every emulator rehash/refresh for each subsequent console instead of just downloading the fucking ROMs and emulating them on whatever hardware they've got handy. Ironically anything besides a console can run all that shit. Phones, tablets, PCs, even fuckin' Macs can do it.

"Yeah but I wanna play it on my TV with my Nintendo controller!" Neat. So go plug in your NES and get playing. Quit paying REPEATEDLY for the same fucking ROM dump and a (likely stolen from open-source) emulator they've barely tuned well enough to run on the new vending machine, er, sorry, console.

For the mainline big budget releases minus Game Freak's solo Pokemon games due to thier incompetence at technical level and Metroid Prime 4 due to the absurd development hell it went through and being made from a bad foundation in regards to what the game was intended to be, a lot of thier output has largely been the same as it always has in terms of the coding quality, though given the piviot to more open-world games (or more often games with open areas), your mileage may varry.


As far as spinoff titles go, thier quality has not gone up since the Wii U for the most part and quite a few of them suffer from the same problems of lack of content or being too barebones to warrent playing at all.

Though take this with a grain of salt as i've not played a lot of Nintendo's switch catalog and got this through osmosis from what people who don't act like the corporation was never the pretty evil entity they always were or act like they shot up thier entire family everytime they do anything.
