Nintendo completely withdraws from Russia

The video game company is ending its operations "for reasons of economic prospects." The sales stop of games is already underway
June 2, 2023, 08:21

Japanese video game company Nintendo is now withdrawing completely from Russia because of the war of aggression against Ukraine. Nintendo Europe has decided to stop doing business in the country "for reasons of economic outlook" and because of problems with payment, the company said in a brief statement. Announced and implemented the halt in the sale of games already on Wednesday.

Nintendo had already stopped shipments of its products to Russia in March last year after the war began, but initially spoke of a temporary measure. The online store has not functioned since then due to suspended transactions in rubles.

New purchases no longer possible
Russian customers with a Nintendo account could continue to load content they had already purchased, the company clarified. However, there are no longer any options to open a new account or make payments, it added. For security reasons, payment data for the individual accounts had also been deleted.

Quite a number of Western companies from various industries withdrew from Russia in whole or in part after the attack on Ukraine. Some did so in protest, others because they said their business in the country was made impossible. (APA, 6/2/2023)

I was going to ask when the dendy version of the switch is coming out but it would probably just be one of those shitty chinese android tablets with controls and that's no fun.

That strange disturbance in the Force, as if hundreds of redditors suddlenly had a Soylent grin on their face.

Doesn't any company that leaves Russia lose all rights to their assets and ip in Russia?
Yeah that's what I'm thinking about, nintendo is fanatic in protecting its IPs and intellectual properties suing everyone who makes emulators, adaptations, mods, etc.

Doesn't this mean that anyone who wants to make this shit that nintendo despises can now just do it from russia and be totally exempt?

Why did they wait until now to announce this? They really thought they could return when the war ends?
They and every other megacorp. After shit hit the fan, most loudly announced they were leaving but in fact shuffled the majority of assets under a local shell brand or put their business "on hold" for a year in the hopes things will go back to normal after Kiev falls in 3 days and the smoke clears. So much for that.

Nintendo banhammered all Russians from using their store along with the Visa and Mastercard payment systems over a year ago without any explanation or comment, so it's not like anything is actually going to change. They simply made it official now.

When the war started I couldn't even access the eShop on 3DS to download the titles I already purchased.

I sure am glad I hacked my 3DS before that shit happened (and have multiple copies of my library stored on different types of storage media), otherwise I probably would've been pretty mad at them.

Has bootleg shit ever really stopped in Eurasia? I know Russians love the Genesis / Mega Drive and have done a lot of bootlegs of its games.

There's still famiclones and shit. But IIRC a lot of it is now all in one consoles. Either Pandora's Boxes, Famiclones on a chip, or just android boxes with Chinese spyware.

@Fighting Type Pokemon I hate your avatar. I hate it so much.
Dumb. Nintendo stay out of the American Uniparty's fake wars. You guys should focus on running Japan instead.
What's Nintendo supposed to do? Holding out hope for Russia's reintegratuon into the West's market system is foolish. There is no money they can make there now.

Thank you. I spent almost a month picking it out, Kiwifarms deserves only the best.

Also, Nintendo are still operating in Russia via the proxy company "Achivka" that just happens to belong to Yasha Haddaji, the head of Nintendo Russia who they ostentatiously fired a few days ago. Purely a coincidence, I assure you.
