This game fucking sucked and failed as a remake. None of the performance was addressed and the art direction downgraded. This franchise is dead.

How would you recommend playing this series? Automata first than replicant or other way around?

What about Drakenguard games?

Replicant (on PS3) is better than Automata and I will stand by that statement. More creative, more interesting. Better soundtrack, better story, better characters.
Automata had better gameplay and coherence, but Nier has better emotional resonance and moments, probably helped by the characters not being robots. Also better music.

Drakengard 1 and 2 (it's not that bad), no need to play them for all endings, but at least the normal ending. Then Nier, then Automata (or Drakengard 3 if you want to go semi chronologically).
Kaine is probably just the creator's futa fetish turned into a waifu. Despite this, she's still the best character in the entire story
I like Emil for his tragedy, but Kaine is more fun to hang out with.

I am still kind of pissed we never got Papa Nier as an alternative mode. The two protags was an interesting element of the original game and it feels like a shame that we didn't get the option in the definitive edition of the game.

I don't care if Taro doesn't like Papa Nier.
When Papa Nier was designed it was in the vein of "how do western protagonists look like", ironically today a Nier designed on western standards would be even more effeminate but with facial hair.

And yeah Papa Nier is way more effective with the main rescue Yonah plotline, while brother Nier is more appropriate to how Khaine and Emil acts around him and the feelings they develop towards him.

Never forget what they took from you

Kill gestalts. Behead gestalts. Roundhouse kick a gestalt into the concrete. Slam dunk a gestalt baby into the trashcan. Crucify filthy gestalts. Defecate in a gestalts food. Launch gestalts into the sun. Stir fry gestalts in a wok. Toss gestalts into active volcanoes. Urinate into a gestalts gas tank. Judo throw gestalts into a wood chipper. Twist gestalts heads off. Report gestalts to the IRS. Karate chop gestalts in half. Curb stomp pregnant gestalts. Trap gestalts in quicksand. Crush gestalts in the trash compactor. Liquefy gestalts in a vat of acid. Eat gestalts. Dissect gestalts. Exterminate gestalts in the gas chamber. Stomp gestalt skulls with steel toed boots. Cremate gestalts in the oven. Lobotomize gestalts. Mandatory abortions for gestalts. Grind gestalt fetuses in the garbage disposal. Drown gestalts in fried chicken grease. Vaporize gestalts with a ray gun. Kick old gestalts down the stairs. Feed gestalts to alligators. Slice gestalts with a katana.

Remake team did a good job at salvaging what was to salvage from the original and turning it into a playable title.
I'm curious on which is better, since the opinion on it is divided, and as far as I know the story doesn't change that munch from the original.
The gameplay surely is better in the remake, right? What do you think? Original or Remake?

Gameplay wise the remake is objectively superior, purely because UX and QoL have advanced since, so controls and camera don't suck ass. It plays similar to Nier Automata, though you still need to grind for upgrade materials. There are two significant parts of the story that change (no outright spoilers in the following segment, but I decided to blur it anyway).
Original had the same story available in 2 versions, one where Nier was Yonah's father, and one where he was her brother (different character models, voice actors and "canon" choice at the end). No incest baiting in either case fortunately. Remake has only the brother timeline, with glimpses of father timeline as an optional combat challenge/arena-like experience, with remixed music tracks that honestly kick ass.
Second story change is that the original's canon ending was dogshit, sad end that satisfied nobody, because Yoko Taro is a fucking jap, and their subhuman culture fetishizes the concept of impermanence and suffering, which is why they're all stuck up, depressed, pretentious cunts. Remake adds a sort-of golden ending/epilogue that follows the dogshit original end, if you find and upgrade all of your weapons to the max, which serves as a "new" canon end, which is much better.

My dude that isn't a changed ending, it's just that they now had the budget to add that ending into the game from the written story book, same as the sub story about the girl in the shipwreck. There were more stories that were written down that never made it into the game, including one where
brother Nier got raped
