The yaoi era isn't gone. Mostly of those people who want lesbian characters only do it because they don't want female characters to threaten their yaoi ships. Sure there are some people who are genuine bur mostly are still just fujos and perverted cucks like Tom Preston.

Yaoi will never be gone because as a concept there will always be people that like shipping gay men. "The Yaoi Era" however is the height of its popularity online, and that seems to have faded because its less prominent now.

I don't think it's gone, but the "cool kids" are all into femmeslash now and like to bully the yaoi fans who are honest about their squeeing.

Yaoi fans are now known as "fujoshi" and are largely reviled, especially if they are straight women. If you're trans or gay you sometimes get a pass.
 
Statistically speaking, yaoi fangirls are pretty much always going to outnumber yuri fangirls, since most people are straight. The main difference is that less people are celebrating it openly, and more people are twisting themselves into pretzels trying to rationalize how they aren't like those awful fujoshi. (For instance, when Yuri on Ice became popular a while back, the worst thing you could do to one of its fans was suggest that the show - written by a woman and primarily focused on gay boy cheesecake - was in fact a yaoi, and not a victory for gay rights that they were all appreciating as allies.)

Rarely you'll even find a yaoi fangirl who's also a nice gal, like the one I know. Sometimes they're obviously straight girls overcompensating with "OH WOW I LOVE GIRLS SO MUCH" claptrap because it's the fashionable thing to do; other times they'll use their attraction to women as a shield to prevent them from being accused of fetishizing gay men.

Actually, I think it's arguable that a lot of people who buy into nice gal mentality are jailhouse gay fandomites; starved for companionship, trying very, very hard to convince themselves that liking girls is better, and they can do it too if they just try hard enough. Which in turn fuels the predatory "have you considered being gay?" types. It's a bit messed up.

I've seen a couple of cases of what seemed like reverse troon autogynephilia where yaoi fangirls basically larp about being each others boyfriend while dressing and acting like a cross between an anime character and a member of a boyband.

Although I guess if they're just on Tumblr they're in their own isolated little bubble.

That's a whole other phenomenon, and a whole other thread, to boot. Tumblr is a rare site where the population is a bunch of overwhelmingly female lonely nerds and compulsive masturbators, so a lot of things typically seen in male communities of that makeup are getting genderflipped.

Unlike bars and nightclubs for gay men, lesbian bars are almost extinct, at least in the US. The things I find on YouTube sometimes. And then watch.

Sort of :offtopic:, but I knew someone who started a lesbian bar by accident.
Basically, this guy took over running a pub, and he hired this barmaid who was your stereotypical teenage butch lesbian. Then he hired her friend, who was very much the same. Then their friends started hanging out there, and again, same stereotypical look. They were quite a large group, quite loud. The barmaids would put on their music and spend a lot of time talking to their friends instead of serving customers, which drove away a lot of the old clientele (who were mostly old men). Then because there was this very visible group of lesbians in there, a lot of other lesbians started coming in.

The problem was that while there was a fairly large LGBT crowd there, the pub wasn't making anything like as much money. It didn't help that a lot of the new crowd were students who'd buy one pint and make it last all evening, or that the barmaids weren't averse to sneaking their mates the odd pint for free.

Anyway, eventually the landlord grew a pair and sacked one of the barmaids. The other quit and then everything gradually returned to normal. The message is: never employ lesbians.
