I did think while I was watching the film that the director is fairly bitter towards the girls that weren't her stand-in character. Probably when she was a child she wanted to be more westernized and fit in with the 'glamorous' crowd at school but it never happened, so now she makes a film that paints them as preteen sluts who lead innocent young Muslim girls astray.

Shes bitter towards Islam for pushing her towards the ultra conservative life too but she goes a hell of a lot easier on that. Senegal has a high rate of female genital mutilation, why was that not brought up since the focus was on preteen sexuality? And at the age of the main character, family members start looking to marry a girl off, we just got a throwaway comment about that from the aunt.

There are scenes in other coming of age stories where young girls talk about growing boobs and putting things down their tops (Now and Then is one) but it's always framed as curious cheeky fun. In this film it was framed as disgusting "these girls are such whores, they know what a condom is, the sluts' really mean spirited.

I'm not really sure where you got the idea from watching it that the movie paints popular girls as "preteen sluts who lead young Muslim girls astray". If anything, it's way, WAY too accomodating towards that as the "right path of liberation".

From what I could gather (again, based on reviews - I refuse to give this movie a watch) it seems like it was less the Cuties leading a young Muslim girl astray and more the young Muslim girl becoming weirdly fixaded with joining this clique of hypersexualized miscreants after a chance encounter she had with one of them in her building's laundry room.

Who’s supposed to be the “bad guy” is kinda all over the place.

The girls she wants to be friends with are bad, until it shows them bonding or they get freaked out over her posting her genitalia online.

The mom is the bad guy for being too controlling until she’s suddenly super accepting at the end.

The aunt suddenly becomes the bad guy at the very end despite being the more accepting of the main girl rebelling for the majority of the movie.

Society is to blame until literally everyone in the movie save for like two or three people are like “wtf, stop sexualizing yourself, children”.

Fuck, the main girl literally tries to drown a girl so she can take her place dancing, tries to seduce her older cousin when he finds out she stole his phone, and doesn’t give a shit when her mother suddenly collapses out of nowhere.

Everyone and no one is the bad influence in this movie, all at the same time.

What I find nonsensical with all these so called commentaries by leftists is that the hypersexualisation they cry about is cause of them. Society is the way it is now cause of them. And we know its bullshit that they care about innocence or purity cause they push for drag kids and pumping boys with esterogen. Really, this is nothing more then normalization to me.

It's Preacher's Daughter Syndrome - the sheltered girl whose entire identity is built on resisting temptation for its own sake turns fullbore sinner as soon as she gets a taste of sin-related fun. People literally have to be taught how to enjoy naughty activities within moderation, but parents in sex/booze-repressive societies try to shield their kids from any notion that naughtiness exists, or that it's something that only "bad people do." This results in their children not knowing how to handle temptation at all, or not knowing why "fun" activities could have negative consequences if they're carried too far. (This isn't just a thing that girls experience, BTW. Edward the VII was so sheltered by his mother Queen Victoria and his father Albert, that as soon as he was out from under their thumbs, he turned into one of the biggest whoremongers in British History.)

One has to imagine that girls growing up in islands of Muslim religion within Western nations are under a lot of pressure from both sides of the culture line- One side wants them to cut off their clitoris and marry their cousin at age 15, the other side wants them to put on hotpants and twerk for horny 40 year old Frenchmen at age 11. Unfortunately, the "Let kids be kids and don't sexualize them" side probably burned up along with the roof of the Notre Dame Cathedral.

Or better yet, just ban all critics. I mean what use are they in this day and age?
depending on how much the film production company pays them in advertising, they're a nice little tool to tell the masses to consume using that nifty little tomato number they put on newly released movies
The director's article got posted to r/movies and I am seeing people in the comments unironically using pedo logic to defend the movie. They consented, they weren't forced to do anything they didn't want too, it was in a safe place with safe people, etc and those posts are getting upvoted. This movie is actually convincing people that sexually exploiting children is okay if the circumstances are right.
God, I hate reddit. God, I hate reddit.

"Artists" and "intellectuals" always imagine themselves outside society, and imagine themselves to have the licence to "criticize" society from a supposedly non-partisan, stakes-free vantage point.

They are delusional.

I don't know about this, though. The film has some weird vibes but doesn't have close-ups of Portman's ass and twerking. That's really where my whole issue lies with Cuties. Nevermind that sex nor sexuality isn't the focus so much as the action asthetic is has.
There's also the fact she's 13 in that movie, not a fucking 11 year old

A detail who come to my mind is remember that Australian senator who wants to ban animes and mangas Down Under? It could be interesting to know the opinion of that Aussie Karen about Cuties. One Youtuber posted that comment.

Lets see Australia banning this Netflix trash, i mean if they do care about children they have to ban it Otherwise they will be exposed as racist due to only banning japanese stuff and supporters of a certain horrible thing due to not banning this Netflix film.

Yep, pretty much. Conservatives only serve one purpose really, to slow down the "progress" because they've conserved nothing and restored nothing.

The media has been busy normalizing weird things involving kids for years like "Drag Queen Storytimes" and every fucking time conservatives get called bigots and give up settling for some lesser evil or dumb compromise.

Maybe I am a doomer but if conservatives had any sway netflix would have removed this shit already, you know if BLM bitched about anything they would and the reason why is obvious.

Conservatives are docile sheep, nobody cares what they baah about because they've shown time and again that they'll march into the slaughterhouse eventually, hell I don't claim to be any different but I don't want to burn cities to make my point, and even if I tried the system would ground me and mine into the mud.

BLM, ANTIFA and leftists in general with all their allies are rabid dogs and everyone hopes tossing a piece of meat in their direction will slow them down enough but it won't.

It's because conservative plebs are complacent and most of the conservatives in any position of influence are controlled opposition. They usually cope with something like "America could never become a dystopian shithole, that stuff only happens in third world countries", or "Just do nothing and let le free market handle it", or "God will punish them eventually" or "We'll win in the civil war that I'm sure will happen any day now".

Much earlier according to this:

Some thoughts on Cuties in an article written by Moira Greyland.

https://www.menofthewest.net/cuties-boiling-the-cultural-frog/

Greyland is the daughter of sci-fi author Marion Zimmer Bradley and has in the past few years been very vocal about the sexual abuse she suffered from both of her parents, Bradley and Walter Breen, from an early age and how people in the sci-fi "community" knew and ignored this, or winked at it.

Most of us will never twerk, will never watch twerking, and would turn off the TV if we saw anyone doing it. We might know as we get older that men might like that, but to us, it would just look stupid and weird and embarrassing. And that is part of the problem with “Cuties.” These girls will have lives after the film, but there will never be a way to erase their images from the film. This is not a theoretical notion. It is not a problem with the theatrical poster. Amy and her friends are twerking, but she also takes a picture of her actual private parts and posts it on social media. She tries to do the same, photographing a boy as he goes to the bathroom.

This is a symptom of sexual abuse, as any psychologist would know. Little girls who have been molested act out sexually, and a smart teacher would note such behavior and intervene at once with a school counselor, even possibly a call to Child Protective Services.

This film shows 11-year-old girls spreading their legs, grabbing their pubic areas and bending over in “doggie style” poses. At least one girl removed her top on camera. Outfits were all deliberately sexually suggestive. The girls found a condom in the park and blew it up. These same little girls watched videos of strippers in thongs twerking. There were shots in the film zooming in on their butts, stomachs, chests, and the front pelvic region. The girls were filmed dry humping the ground and spreading their legs at the camera. One girl tried to take a cell phone video of a teenage boy urinating. One girl also took a photo of her bare genitals and posted it to social media using a stolen phone. One shot even shows a girl’s leather pants being forcibly yanked down and the camera focuses in on the rear shot the perverts would want.

One point made by many critics of the film: 650 children twerked while auditioning for this film. That in itself is a violation. Even more of a violation is all the things these girls had to do during the filming.

650 sets of PARENTS let their children be exploited for money. How many victims will this film end up with, and all in a preposterous effort to allegedly show us that the loss of innocence is bad?

Despite her rock solid left credentials, I am sure she'll now be vilified as an alt-right Nazi by the usual scum.

So many fucking dorks are defending this movie because the detractors are "alt-right" or whatever. Imagine defending fucking child porn to own the rightoids. Here I was, smooth brain that I am, thinking that maybe the left and the right could come together to shit on Cuties collectively, and denounce it for what it is: softcore child porn, that absolutely should not be on Netflix, let alone even be produced at all. But, no, I was naive in hoping that, which I realized when I saw lefties and "journalists," that should be rounded up and shot (in Minecraft), call everyone a stupid fucking moron for saying "geez, this movie is kind of fucked." Maybe, I'll know better than to get my hopes up in the future
