This whole "paid email" thing really screams to me that they are desperate for more control on their forum. Not only will they ban you for wrongthink, but they'll also dox you and call your place of work. This should be a redflag for anyone if people who went to NeoGAF weren't so exceptional.
 
It could just be that they're wanting to avoid a Geonaf where the site is raided on creation.
....Even though they could probably avoid raids just by waiting until the drama dies down and having decent moderation.

It's really funny how that one Twitter account said they would accept all e-mails, then they turn around and change their mind.

Also, I wonder if they would count ISP e-mails as "paid", even though nobody uses their ISP for e-mail?

What they really want, but won't ask for outright, is an email address that traces readily to your identity.
