In my neck of the woods I have observed even the black zoomers with Chase Elliott gear on. I'm shocked just how popular he still is based on name alone when he's been an antisocial camera hating autist for seven or eight years at this point. Even in the age of corporate driverspeak, it's obvious that he doesn't like having the camera put on him and/or fan engagement. Yet everyone eats it up.So first time at an actual Cup race in a while, maybe ever. Used to live in a place that only got Busch and Trucks.
Sure, I heard everything about Chase being the most popular driver and all that. I didn't realize it was literally half the fuckin' crowd. I don't remember even Gordonmania being this strong.
Also geez, the Gragson thing.
Here let me 'help'.Oh god, I don't want to be reminded about that.![]()
But I said I didn't want to be reminded about that. It's just too brutal. Here let me 'help'.
Jimmie Johnson did this. He also removed the King's fucking name from the team he bought, which is only okay because I wouldn't want the Petty name on a Toyota.
I almost called into a post race show on my way back from IMS - something I find abhorrent - to talk about SVG. Top ten in his second race confirms he's the real deal. No other ringer has a solid finish, like ever, and he's got a win and a top ten. He also didn't embarrass himself in trucks at IRP, which is fucking amazing first time through. Meanwhile the nascar faithful are like 'lololol he isn't going to win every single race' which isn't the point.Shane Van Gisbergen is all but confirmed for NASCAR next year, Triple 888 (The Supercars team he races for) have announced the signing of his replacement in Will Brown. I hope Gizzy does well, he's a freak of nature when it comes to racing.

The Nascar media blowing smoke about "all the global interest in the sport" when everyone but SVG was finishing 1 lap down and/or being run over by Wrecky Spinhouse is pretty funny, but also sad at the same time. And it's not like all of them were in Rick Ware shitboxes, either.I almost called into a post race show on my way back from IMS - something I find abhorrent - to talk about SVG. Apparently they told him he got the Lucky Dog in the truck race and he replied "What's that? Is that good?" which is fucking precious.
Trackhouse is also the right team for him, probably. Though I shudder to think what he'd do at Hendrick.
The level nascar superfans get angry when it's not just cletus turnin' left is a thing too. I'm a bit of a road course guy but I don't mind ovals toooo much. The Nascar media blowing smoke about "all the global interest in the sport" when everyone but SVG was finishing 1 lap down and/or being run over by Wrecky Spinhouse is pretty funny, but also sad at the same time. Just the same reason as why the media relentlessly shills Bubba Wallace- Nascar wants to get every demographic watching but the people who already watch their races, but just like the urban yoofs, trying to attract F1 DTS zoomers and European elitists who look down on the sport for being "HURR CLETUS TURN LEFT" is a losing battle. I've said it before, but the suits who run the sport need to get it back to popularity in the US before even thinking about trying to take it overseas, but knowing them, of course they would try a race in Europe while the stands at Bristol and Charlotte are half empty.
I'm with you on both.If you want a dirty euro's opinion on this, the way for NASCAR to dig itself out of it's rut is to: 1. Let drivers and teams do whatever they want on social media. 2. Ditch stupid calvinball gimmicks like the playoffs and stages.
It was always 'personality but personality the Frances wanted'. Tim Richmond had personality, and they lied out their asses to kick him out of the sport.Don't forget people wanking about old drivers having Personalities but when new drivers have a Personality that isn't a perfectly clean one, it's pruned out of the sport. Fuck, if you're gonna be WWE on wheels, you'd think to have some heels around.
The play-off system has always been a weird one to comprehend for me, I think it's just about the only major motorsports category that uses it. Stages and mandatory cautions have irked me also whenever I tune in. I feel like both of these are solutions to a perceived problem, and if they were a genuine problem (ala f1), it's a problem that needs to be fixed elsewhere, and not patched up with manufactured scenarios. If you want a dirty euro's opinion on this, the way for NASCAR to dig itself out of it's rut is to: 1. It's becaused it evolved by sheer reaction to shit, not by any real development. The Chase happened because Matt Kenseth won in 2003 only winning one race. Instead of fixing the point system they developed the Chase. Jimmie Johnson and co. knew how to game the Chase to the tune of five in a freaking row, so we had to have the 'playoffs'.The play-off system has always been a weird one to comprehend for me, I think it's just about the only major motorsports category that uses it. Not even a hot take: There is zero difference between these official race names:The two things where NASCAR does get rightfully mocked besides the on-track gimmicks are how every race's name with the exception of the Daytona 500 sounds like a parody of overcommercialization and having those stupid picture-in-picture ad breaks mid-race.
I don't think that's particularly egregious, it's in line with most other categories. The ad breaks are behind the times though I feel, every other category i watch supports an ad free way of viewing. There will likely be a push from Foxtel in Australia to negotiate for an ad free deal, if interest in the category significantly increases next year. The two things where NASCAR does get rightfully mocked besides the on-track gimmicks are how every race's name with the exception of the Daytona 500 sounds like a parody of overcommercialization and having those stupid picture-in-picture ad breaks mid-race.
We only know the Xfinity angle of the new TV deal, but I imagine we might well get something - especially with NASCAR taking over more of the production side.I don't think that's particularly egregious, it's in line with most other categories. It might be Bill Elliot nostalgia fagging. Apparently, Awesome Bill was also a bit camera shy so people are reliving history through poor Chase. In my neck of the woods I have observed even the black zoomers with Chase Elliott gear on. That seems to be how the people running the company make decisions. It's all reactive. Guy wins the championship with zero wins? Chase for the Cup! Too much green flag racing? Stage cautions! Fans complaining about the schedule lacking variety? Let's go with 10 balls-to-the-wall crazy gimmick races instead of 2 or 3 to see if they work! It's becaused it evolved by sheer reaction to shit, not by any real development.
The biggest market that exists out there is lapsed fans. Racing has the same problem as wrestling. There's tons of people out there who grew up watching races, going to races, etc. with their family, but lost track of it at some point, whether it was a reaction to a dumb rule change or just a lack of time. Now, some of those people may have children themselves. It seems like a no-brainer to promote stock car racing as something that families pass down through generations...but I'm pretty sure most of the lapsed fans are also white male rednecks, and we all know what the suits running Nascar think about them. They still have not learned their lesson from the 90s where they assumed they could do anything up to giving the proverbial middle finger to the rednecks (back then it was 15 cookie-cutters in suburbs, now it's a street course in Chiraq) and they would still watch. That's not how it works. The level nascar superfans get angry when it's not just cletus turnin' left is a thing too. I'm a bit of a road course guy but I don't mind ovals toooo much.
I don't know how they get back to that 50th anniversary golden era. I'm not sure what even made that happen then. Can't be Days of Thunder. Tobacco hit stock cars harder than anything else - and that's sayin' something. But that's not all it was either.
I particularly can't believe a spec car is the way to dig out either.
Same thing. The suits running the company in the 00s didn't like drivers being drawling good ol' boys because "they had to be presentable to the mainstream audience" (see above for how well that marketing worked). Ever since, they've been probably the most restrictive motorsport when it comes to drivers doing anything other than toeing the company line and praising their laundry list of sponsors in interviews. Actions detrimental is a meme because every time a driver steps slightly out of line (including criticizing the company for legitimately unsafe decision making), they get hit with penalties. Even on podcasts the drivers come across as PR robots- compare that to Indycar/F1 drivers who you can at least believe are humans whenever you see them on interviews or the web (whether or not you like them or their series is a different story, but that's beside the point).Don't forget people wanking about old drivers having Personalities but when new drivers have a Personality that isn't a perfectly clean one, it's pruned out of the sport. Fuck, if you're gonna be WWE on wheels, you'd think to have some heels around.
