The cover this time is Inojin and turns out his jacket is purple and yellow. Strange color choice, but he stands out amongst the rest. He's grabbing his weapon on his back and body facing away from the audience. It's more of an action pose which I can get behind.
We pick up last time with Daemon getting behind Sarada and Sumire. He tells them he could kill them both before they even realize it, and then he backs off. Eida wonders how they were able to evade Omnipotence, and ultimately comes to the conclusion she subconsciously chose for them to be unaffected. She tells them what she really wanted was just normal friends this entire time and back when Sarada suggested it in the original manga, she was happy. She never had a normal interpersonal relationship and had been wanting normal friends for a very long time. She says she doesn't see Sumire or Sarada actually harming her, but that she wouldn't mind if her friends were the ones to take her out. Sarada and Sumire both give Eida a hug and even Daemon smiles at this. Meaning finally, at long last, this dumb plot point of Eida and these two potentially being at odds is officially at its end. We no longer have to worry about Daemon and this potentially backstabbing Eida plot that nobody cares about. Plus, we've made actual progress on the Omnipotence plot for the first time in like...1200 pages! We finally know why Sarada and Sumire weren't affected and if she did this subconsciously, it's possible she did other things without realizing it too. The story actually moves forward slightly!
Yeah, decent cover.
Call me a pessimist but she might have told them that she no longer suspects them to make them drop their guard. But if I am wrong, then good stuff. Shame that it took her this long to realize that she could control her ability.
Kashin Koji is explaining to Inojin that Mamushi will use his ability to Divide. He can make clones that are totally not Shadow Clones, they're better and have no strength drawback. However, the more he makes, the dumber he gets. His sense of pain dulls and he becomes simpler. The plan is to make him use Divide so much, he's ineffective and can be all cut down at once. Okay, so far we have a plan and know about his ability. Isn't it nice Koji can just explain this all for us and we don't have to find it out during the fight itself? Apparently destroying their eyes prevents them from using Divide further. Well that's convenient. They'll regain intelligence though once there are fewer. Koji says to keep their numbers high, around 20-30. Shikamaru posits that if there are too few they'll be hard to deal with but too many could potentially swarm them. He asks what happens if Mamushi leaves one clone behind. Koji responds by telling him, he can't. They have a tendency to all flock together and the more they divide, the closer they stick together. Wow, that's really convenient. Almost contrived, one would say. And their plan? FIGHT HIM IN KONOHA. Um...Excuse me, Koji? Are you taking the piss? Inojin asks why not go out and attack him outside the village but Koji states he doesn't want Jura to interfere. Jura likes Konoha and won't harm it, and apparently Mamushi would never go against what Jura wants. Boruto asks what if he gets really dumb and just starts rampaging. Koji says, it doesn't matter because his drive to listen to Jura is INSTINCTUAL, making Konoha the ideal battlefield. Oh, how convenient for you. This sounds like a great idea that totally won't and can't go horribly wrong. He also says Inojin needs to master a new jutsu he creates in the future after Himawari dies to get revenge on the trees. Upon hearing this, Inojin resolves to master it in one day.
A lot of these feel contrived but they also make sense. I appreciate that is not a carbon copy of Mu's version of the technique. He got too weak even after a single Division to be a big threat as he loses access to the Dust Release (the Ninja Storm games get this wrong actually). Still, getting dumber is a hindrance but one that can be mitigated at least by it requiring 20-30 clones to be detrimental. His defeat seems to need effort. As for the need to stick together, it is both a weakness and a strength. Defeating all of them is going to be very hard as you need to kill all of them in a single blow. Not as easy as it sounds. I also do not think that being INSTINCTUALLY loyal to Jura is contrived. Jura is smarter than his maker. He can put fail-safes that Code could never think of. Also, it being capable of going wrong is not a bad thing. There have to be stakes.
So, here is my plan to how I would capture him: Seals. Have each clone be sealed, have him create more clones, make him dumper and, as no clone died, capture the rest in a massive seal with a trap. Seals are the best solution. Also, good to see Inojin do something. He was the bland one amongst the new InoShikaCho. I think his new jutsu will be mass mind control for the many stupid clones.
We cut to Amado and Kawaki discussing the previous battle with Jura. Amado says it's like Jura's virtually immortal but Kawaki insists he could feel like Jura can be killed. He says he needs more firepower, but Amado says he can't handle anymore. He grabs Amado by the throat and pins him against the wall, saying he'll do it or he won't help his daughter. Amado says his body won't tolerate much more but Kawaki isn't having it. He tells Amado to accept his place in life and take the gamble. What a prick. I hope this actually amounts to something and not just a moment where Kawaki is stunned or some bs.
Kawaki just does not compromise. He is an idiot and an asshole. You want more power? Get stronger! Ask Amado to do experiments to make you stronger. HELL, ASK OROCHIMARU!!! You made Mitsuki worship your feet, use that! Seriously, we have kept Orochimaru around and we do not even use him?
We join Konohamaru's interrogation by the Fire Lord's Aide. I wish they'd name this guy already...Anyway, he says just because Konohamaru was involved in the interrogation of Boruto, doesn't mean he isn't a mole. Konohamaru says that at first he despised Boruto, but now he says he feels some kind of inconsistency with him being a traitor. The Aide asks how he can say such a thing given the situation he's in, and if he doesn't think he's just being played. The Aide determines that he doesn't have the character to be a mole, meaning someone else is....At that moment Shikamaru speaks telepathically to Konohamaru. He says he's the one who helped Boruto escape, but don't act suspiciously right now. Great, wonderful timing ass hole. He asks for Konohamaru to help them all out. Sai seems to catch onto something being wrong.
At least Sai is capable enough with conspiracies to maybe be on Boruto's side. Inojin is, so Sai might end up in there too. Maybe Koji knew he could trust Sai? You never know with this guy.
Sumire leaves Eida's to head off to the lab but runs into Boruto once outside. He shows her his sword, which has been chipped during the last fight. He gives a scroll that's apparently new blueprints for technology from the future that Sumire creates down the line. He asks her to fix his sword for him, which she delightedly says she will do. She says though it will be something entirely new when she's done. She also asks him not to call her class rep anymore, Sumire is fine. Much to Boruto's surprise. One thing to note is that Sumire's eyes in this entire conversation has this frog eye thing going where they're as far apart as humanly possible. Several days later, Mamushi arrives at the village.
At least Sumire does SOMETHING. I am not going to lie to you, I was never much of a fan of her. She is too little like a Narutoverse character. She feels like she does not belong in here.
Well after last chapter, we're back to stupid. Moving some plot lines along is nice and ending a weaker one was pretty good. That's where the good things end. Mamushi's powers though are SUPER contrived to make the battle winnable in their favor. In a way, Division feels worse than Shadow Clones given how limited they are. It almost feels like cheating. I also can't help but feel like this is a terrible plan that puts innocent people's lives in danger. Looks like next week we'll get the fight where I'm nothing will go wrong at all thanks to Koji's stupid plans. I'm surprised Mamushi doesn't have a psychic based ability. The first thing he does is counter Eida's Senreigan, what ability was that? It seemed to be something only he could do. We're also using the psychic kid to fight him....I don't know, it feels like that would fit better. Honestly, a weaker follow up to last week.
Division has certain drawbacks but its strength is that every clone is real. Punching them does not dissolve them and considering the other abilities of the DTs, this is going to be a tricky fight. Having him summon 10 very strong and decently smart clones will make the fight very hard, especially as they have to make him feel like his life is in enough danger to summon more clones but not enough to have any of them die. And he can always retreat too. That is something to look out for.
All in all, I have to disagree with your assessment. I think that this version of Division will be a decent threat, provided Ikemoto does not drop the ball. Still, it was a weaker chapter but not a bad one. God knows we had bad ones.
