Gaara vs Lee and the Chunin Exams were the peak of Naruto, it's been nothing but downhill from there. Prove me wrong.

If your favourite Naruto character is not a member of Team 7, you have my pity...She gets a one-shot mini arc in Boruto where she has to fight against a cult with similar abilities to Hidan. It's incredibly forced. Outside of that, she doesn't even make an appearance in the Boruto canon manga. Although at this point, the anime might as well be more canon than the manga. The anime staff at least gave the Kara Members a personality, goals, and something to do....
You're really gonna tell me that The Last wasn't absolutely peak Naruto? Ya know, the movie where Hinata spends half of it pissed off at Naruto over a fucking scarf?Gaara vs Lee and the Chunin Exams were the peak of Naruto, it's been nothing but downhill from there. Prove me wrong.
Wrong! Peak was when Naruto and B were at the island to be protected (after the training) while the Shinobi were getting hammered out there. Waste enough time to get everyone killed and leave the last Tailed Beasts for easy pickings. You're really gonna tell me that The Last wasn't absolutely peak Naruto? Wrong. Peak Naruto was when Hashirama gave Sasuke a jutsu and sage chakra to bind Madara and stop him without violence. Then Sasuke got stabbed and nothing ever came of it.Wrong! Wrong. Peak Naruto was when the underdog was revealed to be the son of the most powerful hokage (before the retcon), heir to a clan with infinite mana reserves and literally the reincarnation of Ninja Jesus Christ.Wrong. Peak Naruto was when Kishimoto decided to give a heartfelt "I love you confession" from the MC's future wife and never do anything with it....ever.Peak Naruto was when we found out that the Akatsuki was actually behind Orochimaru the whole time, and then Fake Madara was behind the Akatsuki the whole time, and then Real Madara was behind Fake Madara the whole time, and then Black Zetsu was behind all of history the whole time.
I am telling you, Kishi has amazing eye for design. Which is unfortunate because it dulls your eyes. You are seeing someone who would be an amazing main character or main villain only to find out that they were a small part of an arc. Disappointing the first time but you are used to it by the 100th and just stop getting your hopes up. You stop noticing how cool those designs are too after a while. My favourite characters in the series are a bit unconventional, and I also love some of the techniques they display. Some that come to mind are: Deidara's clay, Tayuya's demon summons (not her), Kakuzu's heart swapping, and Sasori's puppets (I love puppets!).
All those techniques are super cool, but probably one of my favourite if not my favourite character would have to be Orochimaru. The whole theme about him being a scientist, trying to push the boundaries with his immortality stuff, and all the different skills he'd acquire, he's a bit like Mayuri Kurotsuchi (Bleach) in that aspect, and what makes him appealing to me.
Now there's a character that suffered a stupid fate, and that also has one of the best designs in the series: Dosu Kinuta. Remember him?
They basically killed him just to hype Gaara... they massacred my boy! And was it worth it? No (sigh).
You know, that IS an interesting way to look at it. I said it and I will say it again: Kishimoto is great at giving you emotional scenes. However, as you pointed out, I realise he lacks in another department: Taking advantage of those emotional scenes. He did not realise why many did not buy Hinata's bond with Naruto (and his attempt at fixing it fell flat). He had so many chances to have them be a couple but he went to status quo every time. Her making it clear she gains strength from him in the Neji fight, her trying to save his ass in the Pain fight and then the fight against Ten Tails. Every time Kishi could have used to make Naruhina happen organically he missed it as if he was doing it on purpose only to have to shove in a ton of it in our faces in The Last. Honestly, I was better of imagining how their relationship started if the canon is this forced. Still, better than Narusaku.Peak Naruto was when Kishimoto decided to give a heartfelt "I love you confession" from the MC's future wife and never do anything with it....ever.
Considering how much Sakura is still disliked today, perhaps even more so now that people realize how toxic her personality was, it might have been a good thing she ended up with Lord Edge, the RevengerStill, better than Narusaku
We talked about this before: Kishimoto wanted to give Naruto the saddest, most tragic backstory he could but, as always, he did not think about what it means. By making him be hated by the villagers, the villagers became unsympathetic and stupid for mistreating their TB host. And that is ignoring the retcons that carelessly mixed shit around. He was changed from a random orphan to the son of the couple the entire village worshiped. Which in turn made the villagers seem even worse. Naruto's parents sacrificed everything for the village and did everything they could to make their kid into a protector. And what do the villagers do? Take the kid of their saviors and try to make him regret being born. Fuck!I know this is probably a stupid thing to ponder over when we're talking about a universe where superhuman 12 year old kids are sent out to get involved in life threatening situations, but I've been curious about the other aspects of Naruto's childhood. Like who fed him and changed his diapers when he was baby and made sure he didn't stick a fork in a power socket? And kid's diet seems to consist of nothing other than ramen. He probably wouldn't die from it, but given the fact that he got sick from expired milk, shouldn't a one way ticket to Sodium City at least give him scurvy or something?
We don't really get to see much of his childhood other than the fact that he was seen as a loser orphan.
A good retcon looks like the work of a surgeon. You do not even see it most of the time and when you do, it is minor and you can ignore it. A bad retcon looks like the work of a mad scientist playing God. Parts at stupid places being randomly and weirdly stitched together. A patchwork mess that looks like it would fall apart any second.I still find it funny that Kishi retconned so much stuff without thinking about the consequences... That he unknowingly turned Hiruzen into the most incompetent leader ever (and also kinda of an asshole for letting the fourth Hokage son live like a hobo)
