Fuck that one. Anything with the aim to replace Vincent Price is immediately sacrilege.

The only remakes I'm SOMEWHAT eager for are Atlantis or Treasure Planet. The former I've never liked but I see a lot of potential in. The latter I have a huge soft spot for and would like a second round of if only to get people to pay more attention to the original.

Oh yeah, no Vincent Price alone is a huge problem, but Disney found the one property I would feel obligated to see a live action remake of, it's kinda funny really.

I wasn't aware they were considering Atlantis as well, I'd definitely have to see that as well, that's one instance where they could easily make something better than the original movie.

I agree 100%
I'm not completely sure that Great Mouse Detective is my favorite Disney movie of all time (if not, it's very close) but... Ratigan is the best Disney villain of all time as far as I'm concerned (and that *isn't* close.) I can't even imagine anybody replacing Price, and they shouldn't even try.
Plus, you just *know* that in a remake, they'd make the fun gay love triangle *subtext* between Basil, Ratigan and Dawson into an overt: "Basil and Ratigan were former gay lovers. Dawson is Basil's new boyfriend, and Ratigan is jealous..." Goodbye so soon indeed.

Those two plus Hunchback and the Black Cauldron can work the best as live action movies. Just grab what worked from their original films and expand on them, cut the goofy sidekicks, amp the epic music and character stuff, etc etc. As long as they don't turn them into MCU / Game of Thrones rip-offs or wokefy them to the top, they'll do well.

The rest of Disney movies can't work as live action remakes cause they're too slapsticky cartoony (Hercules, Emperor's New Groove) or it'd just look weird as fuck (Wreck it Ralph, any animal movies, Toy Story)

If they absolutely *must* remake Great Mouse Detective, Disney would literally be better off keeping all (or at least most) of Price's original dialogue in it, and making it fit in with the new version cast and dialogue. (That would still be sacrilegious AF, and terrible... but it's the least bad, but still really bad, option they have if they actually want to make a "live action" version of Great Mouse Detective.

I wonder if they could really do that or if there'd be technical or legal limitations.

Disney clearly doesn't even want to acknowledge the existence of the *real*Black Cauldron, let alone remake it.

Disney would make way more money just re-releasing the originals in theaters. Wouldn’t have to spend millions filming a new one and you’d probably sell just as many tickets. I’d love to see Great Mouse Detective and Treasure Planet in theaters.

Disney used to do theatrical re-releases even.

They did that few years ago and even did 3d version of them back when people cared about 3d, let just say re-release Beauty and Beast, and the Lion King didn't make anywhere close to the remakes.

They maybe shit and soul less, but there is a big market for it

Meh at least they're sticking with the original tale. Ppl are just butthurt about Shang.
At least it's not some white dude love interest

I've seen Twitter spergs whining about the director being a white woman even though the original cartoon was directed by two white men.

This is such a perfect storm. Disney releases a hard remake for Mulan, a movie that bombed in China but did well in other places, and is trying to change everything people liked about it to make people in China like it while still calling it Mulan, and then Corona-chan arrives to ruin their day. Seriously, don't call it just 'Mulan' like it's the exact same thing as your last movie and you'd improve your chances by 100%.

Yeah, this movie is fucked. Li 'You... fight good' Shang is not some sexual oppressor. He's like the least sexually forward of all the disney 'Princes'.

People are suggesting it might actually be because Li Shang actually seemed bi due to being attracted to 'dude' Mulan (though that could easily just be a Polly Oliver situation, but w/e). Regardless, it's another nail in this movie's coffin.

Oh, Disney is so full of shit, and it's hilarious. They didn't omit the "love interest" in the remake to be woke.

They totally did it to appease the Chinese box office because the Chinese audience is all about the "No Homo" life. Lot of people have argued over the years that Shang became attracted to Mulan while she was still in disguise as Ping in the animated version. No way would Disney let this movie have bisexual undertones. Let's be real: This movie is Disney going after that Chinese money. Full stop.

The Corona Virus may have curbstomped that for Disney though. :story: I'm curious to see how this does in theaters. Methinks this should have been a Disney+ release.

With China going down in flames, it's going to be very interesting indeed to see just how much its audience carries Disney these days now that their Chink "financial support" has effectively been slain.

I fully expect the finished Mulan to be 2 entirely different films depending on the marketplace.
One film would be the western woke version where Mulan does shit to fight the patriarchy and there are token gay couple and black soldiers in the Chinese army.
The second version would be the Chinese version where they talk about how China is the greatest country ever, that the communist party is the future and will likely be far gorier.

Why exactly did they have to cast Shang as a British sounding Asian if not to get all the American disney fans wet? And also, why in the fuck would you basically rewrite the story of Mulan to set the main bad as Kublai Khan, when the actual story takes place six hundred years before he was born?
