Happy page 100, kombatants
Edit: page 101 apparently lol
After MK1 was received and proudly welcomed with the biggest "meh" on this side of the fighting genre, its clear NRS is ready to take a break from the series in terms of new entries (so only ports and movies atm) and "MK2" (if its going to be called that) will take its time to come out. It doesnt help that reception to the new timeline (third one) was rather mixed and some wonder if the next game wont retcon us back to something closer to the status quo.
Atm, NRS teased they are working on Injustice 3, which they should have done already instead of MK1.
Please, Lord, bring us an online co-op Shaolin Monks
Or a full on remaster WITH online co-op
Kind of wonder what other entries in a "Mythologies" series would be, we already know a Liu Kang one was being considered (which ultimately became Shaolin Monks), maybe a Raiden one set way way before the events of the original? Maybe a Scorpion focused entry maybe set during MK3 ?
Clearly Midway had understood that they were in a favorable position as MK's lore was legit engaging that people were interested in seeing more of it so it really makes you wonder where we would have gone from there had the sub-zero game been a hit.

So MK is just dead at the moment, disregarding the upcoming legacy collection?

As for Injustice 3, I dont know what to exactly expect from it, especially since the whole "Evil Superman" trend that the OG game helped start (not that the concept was ever original, but still) has lost a lot of steam as people grew very tired over the repetitiveness of it, doesnt help that the more people understand how Superman is actually like as a character, the more its hard to buy Clark would flip out as hard as he did even after all the tragedy. Clark Kent is a man who'd rather step down from the role of Superman before allowing tragedy to dictate his actions (Kingdom Come has its flaws but Clark was handled well mostly) but Im sure that they can hide behind the "alternative timeline" justification.
All that is to say that Injustice 3 is kind of a tough narrative corner because they are stuck with two radically different endings that I legit doubt they can make both canon through multiverse nonsense ala MK11 (where ironically it would have made more sense in Injustice 3, having "uber" Evil Superman invade other timelines as indicated in his ending).
The worst part is that they kind of already showed what happens after the Absolute Power ending in that weird He-Man crossover and it did somewhat conclude things so its very likely they'll stick to Absolute Justice and threat that crossover as an alternative timeline. The problem with A.J is that things are just back to how things started with few differences, except Supergirl is now around so it begs the question what will keep them from falling into the same trap of having a conflict that will somehow force itself to bring Superman back because, otherwise, it wouldnt be an "injustice" plot?
I personally would have Wonder Woman being the primary villain (probably taking on a new OP power) who tries to free Clark from the phantom zone but, to her surprise, when they do get him out they find out Clark...is done with all of it. I wouldnt say he is redeemed but its clear that his time in the zone (while depowered I might add) helped shift his thoughts and forced him to properly reflect, leading to the acceptance he is no longer worth it having kryptonian powers and much less the title of Superman. Diana would be extremely disappointed in hearing that and part of me legit would want a twist where she just kills Clark right then and there but lets say she fatally injures him, they leave and Batman and crew find him and nurse him back to health. Clark tells them what he knows but he almost makes it clear he just doesnt want to get involved in this nonsense, he has done enough damage in his own eyes. However, Kara does insist he must help to put an end to the evil he did create and if he truly isnt the same monster anymore, he will accept. Eventually he does accept but makes it clear that once this is over, he'd much rather be depowered once again, intending to continue to live as a regular human.
You are to keep expecting some sort of twist that Clark will turn evil again and there are some moments where thats teased but no, he refuses and makes it clear that there is no forgiveness to what he has done, to the friends he hurt, to the friends he killed, Oliver, Billy, Lex, many others...and that a better version of himself made it clear, Lois would be rightfully afraid and disgusted with him...but at least he can help fix things a bit and refuse to do further harm.
I do imagine the plot would end with some final battle against Wonder Woman and the ultimate outcome would be Clark flying towards the sun, charging as much sunlight as he can and speed towards W.W as fast as he can.
The result impact kills both of them
The ending would be Bruce recognizing that Superman was his greatest ally...then enemy...and for a brief moment, his ally again and that he hopes that wherever he is, he is at peace...and that Lois welcomed him.
"Superman was the one to bring this age of injustice but Clark Kent was the one that brought an end to it."
Oh yeah, there would be a small handwave why Bruce's voice is suddenly different...RIP Kevin Conroy.
Its a very basic idea of what an Injustice 3 should be that at least doesnt try to be a repeat and, in a way, a bit of an acknowledgement and deconstruction of the "evil superman" concept that the OG game started, by having Superman be the legit hero one last time in this setting.

Deception and Shaolin Monks are the only MKs I truly want to play again.
