After a fatal dog attack three months ago the city of Montreal has ruled to ban all pit bull breeds, or dogs that share common traits with pit bulls (large heads, muscular build, etc.) The law goes fully into effect Monday, after which pit bull owners will be required to purchase a special permit. Pit bulls must be kept on a leash no longer than 4 feet and cannot be outside without a muzzle. The way the law is worded implies that any violation of these regulations will be grounds for the dog to be seized and euthanized. Pit bulls currently in shelters will not be allowed to be adopted and will be euthanized after the law takes effect.
Rescue groups are attempting to move pit bulls to other provinces, and many veterinarians are saying they will refuse to put down healthy dogs. However, under the new law vets that won't euthanize will be required to refer the dogs to vets that will.
