Are playing older games in the series worth it?
Depends how far back you want to go. From gens 1-4, 4 Ultimate and Generations Ultimate is the culmination of what the old gen games had built through trial and error and are probably the best of the bunch if you want to start around there. 3U is also a good game but it's held back a bit by the absence of quality of life features like the lack of the ability to register item and equipment loadouts, and underwater combat not being everyone's cup of tea. Same thing for Freedom Unite, except instead of underwater it has some questionable hitboxes. Anything further back like MH1 or Dos are for people who have fun picking cotton for 20 hours and getting ganked by 7 raptors that instantly aggro onto you when you enter the area while you fight the actual monster.

5th Gen games (World & Rise) revamp a lot of the systems and gameplay and is generally easier to get into than the older games. You could realistically start with either of them if you've never played them, but I'd probably still recommend World to people looking for an entry point, or for people coming off Wilds and are looking for something better.

The more my friend gushes on about Wilds, completely enthralled by coomer mods, the more I realize how much Rise had going for it. Two pets, both dogs and cats having unique builds and abilities. Cosmetic quests, climbing around, taking pictures of rare endemic life, treasures and shit. Rise you can't even customize those NPCs who join you on a hunt.

I feel like gaming just gets worse and worse. I can't genuinely imagine a 40 min essay on "easter eggs in Monster Hunter Origins" or whatever the next MH game might be. Everything comes out half-baked.

Gamer are chronically unhappy with their toys lmao
Monster Hunter players in particular are retarded. It's the same shit with every single fucking game that isn't just a G-Rank expansion.

I think you're just retarded and don't actually know why you don't like Wilds, so instead of just leaving it at "this sucks" and moving on you keep harping on it. Your friend is an even bigger retard for being a gooner, though. So there's that.

I know I'm late as fuck to this, but I only just now found out about the Switch re-release of Gen Ultimate, which is basically the only MH game I want to try out but still haven't (I've had massive issues every time I've tried to emu it on 3ds)

I usually go for ROMs and tweak shit myself, but if one for GenUlt somehow proves difficult to find there's a FitGirl repack I can install and just rip it out of there.

Hot damn I'm looking forward to finally trying out Aerial style, especially if Charge Blades are a thing in GenUlt (and can use Aerial)

Edit:
Afaik Rise is still the only one that lets you actually properly control your mount when you're riding it, can't go hunting without a doggo

Runs like a gem on the last Yuzu EA build, even more so with the HD and 60fps mod.

Damn you rite. I must consume slop video essays so that I can articulate why I don't like a thing instead of just going "damn, the last iteration was better which seems to be a trend in gaming as a whole".

And yes, the majority of MH discourse I see is literally just porn mods woven in between bad opinions. It's as if Capcom games exclusively attract and enthrall-for-life coomers.

I fucking missed the boat on that dumb ass PSP. And now the only ones I can find are either fakes replicas, or massively over priced. I ain't paying 300+ for a glorified Monster Hunter Gameboy.

Why would you want a PSP now a days, a Vita is a better option and just homebrew it. Better yet if you can get a PS TV and mod it plays all the PSP games just fine.

I came across a 10 HOUR review of WorldBorn. I have zero clue how you could stretch a review of the game out that long. The length feels like a meme meant to make you click just to see what the fuck this assclown could be saying. I'll stick to my speculative evolution spergs.

As a collectible mainly. If it were just about playing the games, yeah there's a dozen different ways to go about it.

Video essayists need to learn that without brevity, nobody is going to absorb the information they're trying to shit out. It shouldn't take 20 minutes to explain what the clutch claw is and why people hate it.

I convinced my buddy to become a Hunter. He ended up getting Wilds because I guess it was on sale, and he's the typical casual fag who goes for the new thing. He apparently tried World around the time of Iceborn but got filtered and left it at that. But his foots in the door now. Maybe Rise can come after Wilds. He tried to act like he wasn't interested in that when I was showing it to him, but he'll come around.

He started with LS, predictably. Think it's gonna end up being his main. But he does have a LBG as his secondary so maybe there's hope. We're going at "super casual dad" pace so we only just now got to the Story Balahara and Doshaguma hunts. This is gonna take a long ass time.

I personally don’t mind someone taking their time to explicate something in depth. The problem with video essays is that most are just filled with repetition/filler if not outright just being someone doing a line-by-line verbal summary of every plot/gameplay beat as a substitute for actually playing the game, with no analysis added (e.g., this cottage-industry is so bad that for a game like fear and hunger, infinitely more time has been spent watching videos about it
than actually playing the game (with most “fans” of the aforementioned not even putting a single minute into the actual game IMG_4319.jpeg ))

To be fair, is there any hobby nowadays where there isn’t a substantive outcry of (justifiable or frivolous) discontent? One where practically every fan is saying, “yup everything’s good, it’s nirvana, it’s heaven, I’m in pure bliss.”

I second this.
It fucking annoys me how some people seem to not want to hear any kind of positivity about things.

Two anecdotal examples:
1) Very normie family friend. Only plays Xbox, only games on gamepass or plays nostalgia properties like Diablo 4. Every time we get drunk and I'd talk about fun games, he'd doomer on endlessly about how difficult it was to have fun gaming anymore. I had to physically put a 2nd controller in his hand with some random Tekken 3 rom booted up for him to stop complaining about how impossible it all is. Now the nigga bitches at me about not having all the Tekken 5 characters unlocked.
2) Satanic Panic in the Divinity 3 thread over the trailer

So apparently some guy on reddit discovered a huge performance throttle from Wilds DLC authentication, and that the more DLC you own, the better the game runs. He tested this by making a custom plugin that bypasses this DLC authentication check and I shit you not the framerate nearly doubles. (Archive)

Capcom has whored themselves out with so many microtransactions that the game literally runs at half speed because of it. He also says Digital Foundry has gotten in touch with him so there might be more details in the coming days, but for now, if you're looking to improve your Wilds performance, that'll be $500 goyim!
